Ordinary People and Family Systems
As you read you will learn information of the 1980 movie Ordinary People, the theory of family
systems, and how they relate to one another. I will describe some basic information about the movie as
well as key points that I feel will connect to the idea of family systems. I will also touch base on
strictly the theory of Family systems for a better understand of the characters and plot of the movie.
The movie, Ordinary People, is about a family that is currently suffering the unexpected death of their
son, Buck, due to a boating accident. Shortly after, their youngest son and now only child, Conrad,
tries to committee suicide by slitting his wrists, but was saved by his father, Calvin, who found him in
the bathroom. Conrad was with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The movie basically did a metaphorical domino affect, as you see the family slowly falling down. Like
I mentioned earlier when a family gains or losses a family member it is now considered a whole new
group. Sadly for the Jarrett family they lost a son and were now dealing with adjustments of living, in a
sense, as a new family. Calvin, the father, does a very good job staying positive but still recognizing
that something horrible happened to their family and things still need to be dealt with. Beth seems to
only worry about the material things as a form of a distraction. You see her focusing on setting the
silver just perfectly; worrying about what clothes her husband is going to wear, and she worries more
about making sure that what is happening inside the family stays between the family. Conrad is
emotionally going through a lot but tries his best to keep it inside. I think the way the Jarrett family is
trying to cope with their new group is a perfect example for how the behaviors in the family will
change because of one person. One of the first things that happens is when Conrad decides to start
seeing Dr. Berger. This brings a sense of relief to Calvin, and embarrassment to Beth. In one scene,
Calvin is talking to a friend about the progress Conrad is making

British Influence on the Hong Kong Government
According to scientists, there has been human activity on Hong Kong since the Neolithic and
Paleolithic eras. However, the earliest recorded European man to travel there was a Portuguese man
named Jorge Álvares who did not travel there until 1513. For many thousands of years, Hong Kong
was subjected to the rule of the dynastic China. However, Britain gained the land of Hong Kong after
defeating the Chinese army in the Opium Wars. Today, Hong Kong has a democratic government
modeled very much after the British one. How did it get there? Why is it democratic? Why isn t it
included in the Chinese government?
How did Britain come to play a part in a small country on the other side of the hemisphere? Ever since

The Hong Kong government, on the other hand, has a head of government known as the Chief
Executive. There are two councils of the Hong Kong government, the Executive Council and the
Legislative Council [2]. The Legislative Council is made up of 60 members, 30 of whom are chosen
through geographical constituencies and 30 of whom are chosen by functional constituencies. They are
in charge of monitoring the government s performance, as well as enacting, amending, or repelling any
laws in accordance to the provisions of the Basic Laws and legal procedures. There are, however, even
more duties of the Legislative Council that are more minor than the ones mentioned [6]. The Executive
Council is the other council involved in the Hong Kong government. The Executive Council primarily
assists the Chief Executive in policy making decisions. Members are appointed by the Chief Executive
from the Principal officials of the executive authorities, members of the Legislative Council, and other
public figures. The Chief Executive must consult the Executive Council before making important
policy decisions, introducing bills to the Legislative Council, making subordinate legislation, or
dissolving the Legislative Council. If the Chief Executive does not accept the Executive Council s
majority ruling, he may place the specific reasons on file. The Judiciary branch is basically in charge of
making sure Hong Kong remains

Viola and Orsino in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare...
Viola and Orsino in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
In William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night there are several relationships that develop throughout the
play. Among the many characters whose interaction and misunderstanding become the core of the plot,
Viola and Orsino have the most significant relationship. The way they interact with one another causes
the complex conflict of the play, and as the conflict comes to be more complex the two characters turn
from strangers to friends and then to lovers.
In the first Act Viola and Orsino s interaction is on the level of two complete strangers. From the
beginning Viola is not honest with Orsino because she disguises herself as a male page named ... Show

In lines 98 102 of act two scene four there is an example of her trying to persuade him that there are
other women about. Sooth, but you must. Say that some lady as perhaps there is, hath for you as great a
pang of heart as you have for Olivia. Must she not then be answered? Orsino brushes the comment off
and says that there is no stronger love than he has for Olivia, but the conversation in itself is a big step
in their development into friends from complete strangers. The statement also leaves the audience a
back door to a possible aspiring love relationship.
In the fifth and final act the love between Orsino and Viola is now possible because viola reveals that
she is in fact a woman and not the male page Cesario.
Twelfth Night In Shakespeare s Twelfth Night, it is clearly evident that the fluctuation in attitude to the
dual role and situation and tribulations imposed upon the character of Viola/Cesario ends up in a better
understanding of both sexes, and thus, allows Viola to have a better understanding for Orsino. Near the
opening of the play, when Viola is adopting her male identity, she creates another self, like two masks
and may decide to wear one or the other while swinging between the two identities in emotion and in
character. She decides to take on this identity

Part-Whole Effect Vs Composite Effect
BACKGROUND
The ability of the human visual system to integrate facial features into a gestalt whole is one of the
processes that seems to contribute the most to human face perception (referred to as holistic face
processing; Taubert et al.; 2006). A large number of behavioral studies provide evidence that
demonstrate that faces are processed holistically. Two examples that provide evidences for holistic
processing are the composite effect and the part whole effect. In composite effect tasks, participants are
required to decide whether two identical top halves are the same (Goffaux Rossion, 2006; Le Grand,
Mondloch, Maurer, Brent, 2004; McKone, 2008). Evidences suggest this task is more difficult when
the two top halves are paired with different bottom halves, indicating that perception of the identity of
features in one half of a face is changed by a whole face ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The part whole effect describes the difficulty subjects have recognizing familiar faces from isolated
features (Davidoff Donnelly, 1990; Donnelly Davidoff, 1999; Tanaka Farah, 1993; Tanaka Sengco,
1997). These two effects suggest that features seen in a whole face context are integrated, instead than
being represented and processed independently. These observations are supported by
neurophysiological data fromsingle cell studies (Freiwald, Tsao, Livingston, 2009; Tsao, Freiwald,
Tootell, Livingstone, 2006) and event related potential studies (Jacques, d Arripe, Rossion, 2007),
confirming the idea that faces are processed holistically (Farah, Wilson, Drain, Tanaka, 1998; McKone,
Kanwisher, Duchaine, 2007). Although there have been many demonstrations of holistic processing on
judgments of face identity, there have been few studies which investigated whether holistic processing
is involved in trait

Political Corruption In Timothy Findely s Famous Last Words
Political Corruption in Timothy Findely s Famous Last Words Political corruption is when
governments abuse their powers for illegitimate purposes. Political corruption was evident in World
War II by Hitler government because Hitler spoke to mass audiences to tell them to hate Jews and
Communists, and to make a new German Empire that would rule for thousands of years. This connects
to the novel Famous Last Words because Hitler makes a corrupted government and a group of people
attempt to make a new government to take over. In his novel, Famous Last Words, Timothy Findley
shows political corruption through the decisions and types of governments and how it affected people
during World War II. These suggest that Findley wants to tell the reader that political corruption can
make people want to create their own government to overthrow the existing government. The
Characters the Duke of Windsor and a man called Von Ribbentrop make an alliance to make a

The Doctrine Of Precedent And How It Operates Within A...
1. Explain the doctrine of precedent and how it operates within a criminal court hierarchy. (3 marks)
The doctrine of precedent is the principle in which judges follow when deciding the results of cases.
This principle ensures that the law is applied consistently across matters, sometimes applying past
reasoning from similar cases. Some courts are bound to follow the doctrine of precedents if a similar
case was tried in a higher court. Generally, the High Court of Australia has precedence over all courts
(Federal, Supreme, District, Local etc.) and is not bound to follow the decisions made in these lower
courts.
2. Briefly describe the following court hearings and explain their main purpose:
a) A jury trial
Jury trials are held in District or Supreme Courts. These trials are used to ensure that people that are
not influenced by the government and power can have their say in the verdict of a defendant. The jury
is a selection of people that are chosen to attend a case and listen to evidence to make determinations
on questions of fact. The judge then takes the jury s decision into account when deciding the defendant
s verdict.
b) A committal hearing
Committal hearings are only held for some indictable offences (such as manslaughter or aggravated
burglary). P. Salmelainen (1992) suggests that committal hearings are used to determine whether there
is enough evidence to warrant the accused being sent to stand trial. These hearings are often held in
local courts until the

Identifying And Evaluate Depression Among Graduate Students
The purpose of this literature review is to identify and evaluate depression among graduate students,
relations to student development theory, and provide treatment outcomes and implications for student
affairs professionals to practice. Depression is a disabling disorder that can disrupt an individual s
ability to function occupationally, socially, physiologically, and psychologically for long periods at a
time (American Psychiatric Association, 2014). In the U.S. alone, an estimated 17 million adults suffer
from depression yearly and affecting college students as the most common psychological disorder
(American Psychiatric Association, 2014; Uqdah, Tyler, DeLoach, 2009).
At a higher risk for depression, graduate student s changes in environment, finances, social support,
and living conditions associated with beginning a graduate program can lead to depression (Uqdah,
Tyler, DeLoach, 2009). However, most studies and institutions on depression focus highly on
undergraduates and providing support and resources that guides undergraduate s student development.
Compared to undergraduates, the research, services, and resources provided to graduate students are
limited or not easily accessible. If depression is left untreated, depressive symptoms can compromise
student learning and affect academic performance, thus, enabling negative behavior, such as alcohol
abuse, unsafe sex, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation (National Institute of Mental Health, 2012).
However, if

The Crucible And Breaker Morant Analysis
The tales of Arthur Miller s The Crucible and Bruce Beresford s Breaker Morant while appearing
vastly different at a glance; share many common themes. These include scapegoats, trials and revenge.
In The Crucible the antagonist, Abigail, is depicted as a spiteful and vengeful character that will stop at
no end to gain the satisfaction of revenge through destructive means. Good Putnam is portrayed as a
revenge driven character from The Crucible . In the movie of Breaker Morant , the protagonist of the

1. For Fraction 1, below 110 degree Celsius (approximately 63 degree Celsius) because that is the
boiling point for 1 hexene. For Fraction 2, around 143 degree Celsius because that is the boiling
temperature for 2 bromohexane.
2. 1 hexene and 2 bromohexane are both in liquid states. So they have similar solubility. However, the
recrystallization technique can be used only when two different compounds have different solubility. 1
hexene and 2 bromohexane cannot be separated when using the recrystallization technique because this
technique is used to dissolve mixture solid in a solvent at high temperature. The solution is then cooled
until one of the compounds crystalizes.
Extraction technique also cannot be used to separate these two compounds because of the same
property they have: they are nonpolar, resulting non acid base extraction. Extraction technique is used
to separate two different compounds to organic and aqueous layer, which means one phase of one
solvent has to be polar and the other phase has to be nonpolar.

In the years following WWII, Greece began to identify itself more as a Western European nation than
as a Balkan state. The economic integration of the European states began in 1951 with the creation of
the European Coal and Steel Community between Germany and France. This agreement helped to bury
the hatchet between these two former enemies, and served as a blueprint going forward in lowering
trade barriers, implementing common tariffs on imports from outside nations and increasing
cooperation among European countries. These efforts resulted in the establishment of the European
Economic Community in 1957. As old hostilities faded, Europe began to see itself more as a cohesive
unit of interrelated economic and political systems and provided a united front against the economic
power of the United States on one side, and the threat of communism on the other side.
For example, France and Germany, once bitter enemies, made the decision to link their currencies in
response to what they considered to be the opportunistic economic policies of the United States. By
doing this, it hastened the collapse of the Bretton Woods agreement and allowed European countries to
float their currencies. This also allowed countries to

Knowledge Is Power In The Invisible Man, By Ralph Ellison
Abtin Ghajarieh Sepanlou
ENG 4U
Ms. Smith
19 July 2017
Mind Does Not Matter
The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, Knowledge is power. Information is liberating.
Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family . Although this phrase may
contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily reject the notions of social
responsibility and social education. This is due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its
potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to
success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a
large group of people based on a variety of prejudices. Using this perspective can help better
understand the message of the novel, The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison. The story follows the life of
a black man during the late 1920 s or early 1930 s, when racism was at its peak. In this novel, the
author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not necessarily equal
power, but those who lack knowledge abuse their power. The author accomplishes this by showing us
the power of ignorance, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power.
Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator s speech in the beginning of
the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. The author
shows this when the narrator attempts to present

Proximity is the way we view things which are close together as a group or look closer than they
actually are. Continuity is taking more of an interest in a straight smooth lines rather than rigid and

mirror image. We see symmetrical shapes easily than unsymmetrical shapes. Similarity is objects and
shapes placed together as they look similar, where as dissimilar objects are likely to be viewed
individually. There are also laws that relate to common groupings. Fate is when we see objects that

Essay On History Of Media
History of Media Assignment Submitted by: Nina George, Aashik.V.Ajith New media has emerged

So in such a scenario, is it just the print media that is dying? Is it not TV and radio too? Although, it is
the print media which seems endangered, it is a fact that the success of any media tells upon another
media. It is only a tug of war going among these, where the centre gets oscillated between the ends.
Each has been devising ways to deal with the plus points of the other. TV is getting interactive, radio is
getting gripping, newspapers and books are trying to get more attractive with the incorporation of
visuals and graphics and interactivity to some extent, and all of them together are going online.
Adaptability is crucial for existence. The bottom line is if the print media continues to adapt to the
changing media habits of people and corner its target readers well, it will survive. And it ought to do
that for its good. Somehow, there is a feeling that even if it fails in that, the power of the written word
will always be supreme. So while traditional media s old channels print and broadcast are floundering,
their online properties are thriving. In fact, I d argue that the influence of traditional media outlets like
theNew York Times and CNN are greater than ever. The internet and social networking sites have
given traditional media outlets an audience beyond their once limited geographies. For example, take
the Boston Globe.

Pan Boricua: Developing a Market Strategy For
The Hispanic Market in the United States
PAN BORICUA INC: A BRIEF OVERVIEW
Pan Boricua Inc. was formed back in 2001 when Auriel Rivera and Franco came up with a plan to
export Puerto Rican bread to the United States. Their major product was pan sobao which is bread that
is known for its unique flavor and texture; and it s made in Puerto Rico. An opportunity was identified
when several Puerto Rican residents would take several pounds of pan sabao from local bakeries to the
United States. The program included the export of frozen bread dough along with branded bread loaf
paper cover and merchandising at the point of sale. The initiative was aimed at cities in the United ...

The baked goods industry in the United States is one that is highly competitive; especially once big
stores such as Wal Mart and entered. It is however important to note that artisanal baked goods hold
49% market share1. The market for bread was highly competitive with a number of barriers which
stirred competitors away from traditional bread offering and explore the opportunities in niches such as
gourmet and specialty breads. A variety of bakery products of Hispanic origin were also available in
the United States. This meant that numerous bakeries had surfaced.
When it comes to pan sobao however, Pan Boricua faced only one rival, Mi Pan Asociados. The rival
had set up a system of mini bakeries that allowed supermarkets, gas stations and other retail
establishments to sell fresh bread. In the United States, they also faced other competitors, such as the
majority of U.S. retailers who had aisles dedicated to ethnic foods in their stores. In fact, some such as
Wal Mart and Kroger have also incorporated bakeries within the stores.

way the camera uses the focus is very atmospheric, slowly using slow motion, scaling and clutch
angles as well. These have reached a high point in the musical of the film because the visual style
coincides with the nature of the music s hypnotic jazz, and the mood is just with the audience to attract

Genetic Predictions in the Fruit Fly The Drosophila melanogaster is a fruit fly with a very short life
cycle. They can be winged or wingless, and have red eyes or white eyes. The different options are
called alleles. Alleles are the variants of a specific gene, and one is received from each parent on each
chromosome. ( What Are Dominant and Recessive? ). It was chosen to use winged females and
wingless males to predict the offspring in this experiment. The winged allele is dominant, meaning it
only needs one allele to physically appear. The wingless allele is recessive, which gets covered up by
the dominant allele ( Fruit Fly Genetics ). Each trait has two alleles in the flies ... Show more content

The declaring of 1975 85 decade as the International Women s decade also gave impetus to women s
movements for removing the notion of inferiority of women and giving them a sense of identity. The
Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB) established by the Government of India in 1953, also promotes
and strengthens volunteer efforts for the welfare of women. The Ministry of Welfare, Government of
India, too, gives grants to voluntary organizations for activities like construction/expansion of hostels

generally initiated and spread by charismatic leaders or by political parties and religious organizations.
In the former case, the ideologies are transmitted downwards while in the latter case, these are

The Negative Impact Of Globalization
Intro Globalization has been a controversial topic, does it have a negative impact or positive impact
internationally. This essay will first discuss the effects of globalization on the international system.
Secondly, the essay will examine realism and how this theory explains globalization. Lastly, this essay
will discuss how realism is a tool that effectively explains the issue of globalization.
Globalization
Globalization is a system to exercise and distribute power; it s a winner and loser system. Levels of
globalization vary as well how a country benefits from the system. The process of globalization is
mostly seen in terms of economic globalization; however, there are other aspects of it that impacts
international security and the meaning of power. There are three dimensions to economic globalization:
globalization of labor, globalization of production, and the globalization of finance. Globalization of
labor is the integration of national labor markets due to the increase of mobility (Kegley, 244).
Globalization of production refers to how multiple countries produced different parts to complete the
product. Corporations have supply chains in different countries. Both labor and production
globalization cause goods to be produced by people working in different parts of the world instead of it
being produced locally by the locals (Kegley, 2014). Offshoring of jobs is a complaint of globalization.

Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD) Program Equity and Effectiveness
Introduction
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a program that, like its name
suggests, has the main objective of reducing the emission levels of green house gases from land uses,
through incentives in developing countries. The program includes measures related to conservation,
sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forests carbon stocks (United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change 2008).
It is well known that climate change is one of the most controversial environmental issues that has
been discussed, and in the climate change picture REDD is a topic which contains diverse points and
dimensions that request attention. The REDD program includes goals that are seen by many people
how extremely important and essential ones to address the climate problem, whereas other
environmentalists may put in doubt its efficiency and feasibility. Given its potential importance to the
global climate and its complexity, it is necessary consider biophysical, social and economic magnitudes
of REDD.
REDD is an initiative with a variety of features. It does not involve only local management and
impacts, but rather does include a global effort and integration of public and private sectors. It is
important to think about all the management levels, all impacts and consequences of the program,

Scales of Construct for Human Behavior
Research psychologists developed scales of the construct to have a better understanding of the human
behavior. Scales such as the James internal external locus of control scale, Reid Ware s three factor
internal external scale, multidimensional multiattributional causality scale, the Nowicki Duke
scale(Jerry), Rotter s internal external locus of control scale, and Levenson s IPC Scale were widely
used in research, with the latter the most commonly used measure (Halpert).
Rotter developed the internal external, which refers to the extent to which individuals believe their
actions are controlled by their behavior, capacities, skills etc. Levenson then created a developed scale
of Rotter s. A study suggested that it would be better to use Levenson s scale over Rotter s due to the
latter s lack of performance (James r. Lumpkin).
Questions were raised concerning the validity and reliability of each scale. Sapp and Harrod argued
that Levenson s locus of control scale was reliable and valid but that other researchers should also be
conducted on other scales. They also argued that the broadness of the construct enables other studies to
keep questioning its validity (Sapp and Harrod).
Loci of control scales were applied in conducting many psychological researches in a variety of fields
such as heath, parental, academic, age specific, cultural, ethical etc. Results of the studies proved the
importance of the construct and the scales used to measure it.

Consciousness Arguments Against Turing s Test
The consciousness argument is the strongest objection against the Turing s test. Machines act by
interpreting symbols based on given rules. If they follow rules and interprets symbols, then the
programmers influence their actions, not their own thoughts and feelings. Since their own thoughts and
feelings do not influence their actions, they are not truly aware of how these actions can affect their
emotions and the surroundings. If machines are not aware of their behaviors, they are not conscious.
Without consciousness, machines cannot have minds. Therefore, the Turing s test is not sufficient to
prove that machines can think. Turing doesn t respond directly to each premises of this argument,
instead he responds to its conclusion that machines are not conscious. To begin with, Turing follows
the consciousness objection s line of thought and states that the only possible method to know if a
machine can think or not is to literally become that machine. Similarly, the only possible method to
know if a person can think or not is to literally be that person. According to Turing, these statements

The machines can now give oral responses instead of written responses, also known as a viva voce .
Humans conclude that they have conscious through their conversations about feelings. If humans can
conclude through that method, then it is possible for machines to do it too (?). If a machine can have
intelligent conversation with the judges about its work or creation, then that machine is aware of its
action. If a machine is aware of its action, then it is conscious which also means it has a mind. Lastly,
Turing believes that the concept of consciousness is not relevant to his question about whether a
machine can pass the imitation game. The result of the test is not affected by consciousness

Generation gap means difference in attitude, or lack of understanding between younger and older
generation. This generation gap has always been there but these days it has reached to an explosive
stage. The values and patterns of life have changed to a great extent. Today, everybody likes to live and
behave in his own way. This attitude has widened the generation gap, which can never be filled. It is
now destroying family life completely. The elders look after the children and make all sorts of
sacrifices to bring them up. Naturally, they feel they have a right over them. They want their children
to follow their instructions as they have certain expectations from them. But the children, when they
grow up, want a complete freedom in their thoughts and actions and unfortunately their thoughts and
actions are just opposite to those expected by the elders. They revolt when any kind of restrictions are
imposed on them. Consequently, the family breaks up and everything gets ruined.
In India, we are yet in the initial stages, but the gap has appeared and it is going to grow bigger day by
day. So it is not only the responsibility of the younger but also of the elders to fill this gap with their
love, affection and trust. The

Wallis was an employee of the Vickers Aircraft Company. In March 1941, he completed a piece of

aerial attack even if it was built underground. This fifty page piece of work stated that the Allies had to

The Pros And Cons Of Justifying The Aeneid War
When the Greeks achieved victory over Troy, Aeneas fled with the other Trojan survivors. The Trojans

Juno stirs up trouble and plunges the Trojans and Latins into war. The fact that the Trojans are initially

First, the Trojans have not intentionally provoked the rulers of the cities of Italia. When the Trojans

to further establish a personal connection with the community. He was trained as a Pharisee, which
indicates that he, at one point, spent a considerable amount of time in the city of Jerusalem.
Additionally, Pharisees were the most respected religious group and political party of the Holy Land.
The Pharisees were committed to the accurate interpretation of the [Jewish Scripture] and to
scrupulous obedience to its commands...[and] they aspired to a [high] level of purity (Trebilco 4). After
Paul s conversion to Christianity, it is clear that he regularly consulted and had extensive knowledge of
both the Greek and Hebrew Old Testaments. Paul s ability to cite Old Testament passages in the Jewish
native language displays his familiarity with their theological framework, creating a religious
connection and proving himself to be a trustworthy source of information. In addition to applying his
deeply rooted Jewish background to create kinship among the Jews, Paul was heavily influenced by his
Greek surroundings, and his Hellenistic background fostered Paul s ability to deliver a new message to
a new community, the Gentiles. Born in the Greco Roman city of Tarsus, Paul received a traditional
Greek education along with his conservative Jewish education. Greek education consisted of
grammatical instruction, rhetorical training, and an introduction to Greek literature, all of which

special infant formula based on soy, rice and almond for babies. Find other foods that can fulfill the

medicines, facial cosmetics and other beauty products. Always check the labels before using any of
these items. Avoiding Dairy Avoiding dairy is not as easy as stopping milk consumption. There are
numerous foods that contain milk, while some are processed using the same machines for milk

Analyze The Role Of Naturalization In America
World War I military draft cards are another resource that could assist you in determining time of
Naturalization and location. As can be seen in the example provided it is clearly noted that Myer was a
Naturalized citizen.
By 1825, the number of Jews was roughly 4500 in America, but the number of German Jews
immigrating was on a steady increase. Cincinnati, Ohio experienced a large growth of these people and
became a center for Reform Judaism in America. These Jews created communities in small towns of
the Midwest, West, and South. Though land was plentiful in the Ohio Valley, the Jews were
unaccustomed to the ways of farming and chose to settle in populated areas.
Jewish population growth in America exploded in 1880 through 1924 with close to two million Jews
coming from Russia, Poland, Austria Hungary, and Romania. After their arrival at Castle Garden (and
later Ellis Island), the immigrants often settled in some of the poorer neighborhoods of major cities ...

However, by 1817 New Brunswick began issuing naturalization certificates. In Upper Canada there
were no naturalization laws until roughly 1828. It was not until Canada gained its independence in
1867 that naturalization became a federal process. The provinces had jurisdiction over immigrants, but
the certificates were granted by the Secretary of State for Canada. Petitions for citizenship were
forwarded on to the Secretary of State from the local judicial courts. Unfortunately the Department of
the Secretary of State destroyed the records for the years 1854 to 1917. All that remains for those years
is the index which holds the name, residence and court where the certificate was sent. Fortunately the
records for the years after 1917 are much more detailed and helpful. A resident or citizen of Canada
can submit an Access to Information Request Form which is available at Canadian post

The Pros And Cons Of College Sports
Sports can have an effect on many people, and that effect is basically allowing people to forget about
the problems that are going on in the world. Many of the problems are usually nationwide, or the
problems could be individual problems. Sports provide an opportunity for fans to come together and
share a common interest. Also, sports on the collegiate level presents an even bigger opportunity for
fans to come together because of the many diverse schools. Studies show that colleges and universities
are education driven, but sports can provide organizations with an opportunity to upgrade facilities, as
well as educational opportunities through the profits that are gained. Colleges and universities not only

If high school sports are about having fun, making friends, and representing your school, college sports
are about those things, but also about making money and obtaining national recognition for the college,
which may enable it to attract more applicants and more financial support from alumni and friends.
(Porto, 2014). The NCAA was formed when President Theodore Roosevelt called for safer practices in
college football due to the amount of injuries and deaths that were causing many schools to question
whether or not their school should continue to participate in sports. The NCAA was more of a group
that met in order to discuss the landscape of collegiate sports and to develop rules for the participating
sports.
Additionally, in 1921 the first ever NCAA National Championship was implemented and from there
addtional sports was added which lead to the need for a more formal governing body. Sports and
sporting events can have both positive and negative effects on the education system. Although, many
people usually enjoy a fun sporting event. The
NCAA s structure consists of governing bodies that oversee legislative bodies in that are made up of
volunteers of the participating schools. These committees manage

  • 2. Ordinary People and Family Systems As you read you will learn information of the 1980 movie Ordinary People, the theory of family systems, and how they relate to one another. I will describe some basic information about the movie as well as key points that I feel will connect to the idea of family systems. I will also touch base on strictly the theory of Family systems for a better understand of the characters and plot of the movie. The movie, Ordinary People, is about a family that is currently suffering the unexpected death of their son, Buck, due to a boating accident. Shortly after, their youngest son and now only child, Conrad, tries to committee suicide by slitting his wrists, but was saved by his father, Calvin, who found him in the bathroom. Conrad was with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie basically did a metaphorical domino affect, as you see the family slowly falling down. Like I mentioned earlier when a family gains or losses a family member it is now considered a whole new group. Sadly for the Jarrett family they lost a son and were now dealing with adjustments of living, in a sense, as a new family. Calvin, the father, does a very good job staying positive but still recognizing that something horrible happened to their family and things still need to be dealt with. Beth seems to only worry about the material things as a form of a distraction. • 3. British Influence on the Hong Kong Government According to scientists, there has been human activity on Hong Kong since the Neolithic and Paleolithic eras. However, the earliest recorded European man to travel there was a Portuguese man named Jorge Álvares who did not travel there until 1513. For many thousands of years, Hong Kong was subjected to the rule of the dynastic China. However, Britain gained the land of Hong Kong after defeating the Chinese army in the Opium Wars. Today, Hong Kong has a democratic government modeled very much after the British one. How did it get there? Why is it democratic? Why isn t it included in the Chinese government? They are in charge of monitoring the government s performance, as well as enacting, amending, or repelling any laws in accordance to the provisions of the Basic Laws and legal procedures. There are, however, even more duties of the Legislative Council that are more minor than the ones mentioned [6]. The Executive Council is the other council involved in the Hong Kong government. The Executive Council primarily assists the Chief Executive in policy making decisions. Viola and Orsino in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare In William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night there are several relationships that develop throughout the play. Among the many characters whose interaction and misunderstanding become the core of the plot, Viola and Orsino have the most significant relationship. The way they interact with one another causes the complex conflict of the play, and as the conflict comes to be more complex the two characters turn from strangers to friends and then to lovers. Orsino brushes the comment off and says that there is no stronger love than he has for Olivia, but the conversation in itself is a big step in their development into friends from complete strangers. The statement also leaves the audience a back door to a possible aspiring love relationship. In the fifth and final act the love between Orsino and Viola is now possible because viola reveals that she is in fact a woman and not the male page Cesario. • 5. Part-Whole Effect Vs Composite Effect BACKGROUND The ability of the human visual system to integrate facial features into a gestalt whole is one of the processes that seems to contribute the most to human face perception (referred to as holistic face processing; Taubert et al.; 2006). A large number of behavioral studies provide evidence that demonstrate that faces are processed holistically. Two examples that provide evidences for holistic processing are the composite effect and the part whole effect. In composite effect tasks, participants are required to decide whether two identical top halves are the same (Goffaux Rossion, 2006; Le Grand, Mondloch, Maurer, Brent, 2004; McKone, 2008). Evidences suggest this task is more difficult when the two top halves are paired with different bottom halves, indicating that perception of the identity of features in one half of a face is changed by a whole face ... The part whole effect describes the difficulty subjects have recognizing familiar faces from isolated features (Davidoff Donnelly, 1990; Donnelly Davidoff, 1999; Tanaka Farah, 1993; Tanaka Sengco, 1997). These two effects suggest that features seen in a whole face context are integrated, instead than being represented and processed independently. These observations are supported by neurophysiological data fromsingle cell studies (Freiwald, Tsao, Livingston, 2009; Tsao, Freiwald, Tootell, Livingstone, 2006) and event related potential studies (Jacques, d Arripe, Rossion, 2007), confirming the idea that faces are processed holistically (Farah, Wilson, Drain, Tanaka, 1998; McKone, Kanwisher, Duchaine, 2007). (3 marks) The doctrine of precedent is the principle in which judges follow when deciding the results of cases. This principle ensures that the law is applied consistently across matters, sometimes applying past reasoning from similar cases. Some courts are bound to follow the doctrine of precedents if a similar case was tried in a higher court. Generally, the High Court of Australia has precedence over all courts (Federal, Supreme, District, Local etc.) and is not bound to follow the decisions made in these lower courts. 2. Briefly describe the following court hearings and explain their main purpose: a) A jury trial Jury trials are held in District or Supreme Courts. These trials are used to ensure that people that are not influenced by the government and power can have their say in the verdict of a defendant. The jury is a selection of people that are chosen to attend a case and listen to evidence to make determinations on questions of fact. The judge then takes the jury s decision into account when deciding the defendant s verdict. b) A committal hearing Committal hearings are only held for some indictable offences (such as manslaughter or aggravated burglary). P. Salmelainen (1992) suggests that committal hearings are used to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant the accused being sent to stand trial. • 9. Identifying And Evaluate Depression Among Graduate Students The purpose of this literature review is to identify and evaluate depression among graduate students, relations to student development theory, and provide treatment outcomes and implications for student affairs professionals to practice. Depression is a disabling disorder that can disrupt an individual s ability to function occupationally, socially, physiologically, and psychologically for long periods at a time (American Psychiatric Association, 2014). In the U.S. alone, an estimated 17 million adults suffer from depression yearly and affecting college students as the most common psychological disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2014; Uqdah, Tyler, DeLoach, 2009). At a higher risk for depression, graduate student s changes in environment, finances, social support, and living conditions associated with beginning a graduate program can lead to depression (Uqdah, Tyler, DeLoach, 2009). However, most studies and institutions on depression focus highly on undergraduates and providing support and resources that guides undergraduate s student development. Compared to undergraduates, the research, services, and resources provided to graduate students are limited or not easily accessible. If depression is left untreated, depressive symptoms can compromise student learning and affect academic performance, thus, enabling negative behavior, such as alcohol abuse, unsafe sex, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation (National Institute of Mental Health, 2012). These efforts resulted in the establishment of the European Economic Community in 1957. As old hostilities faded, Europe began to see itself more as a cohesive unit of interrelated economic and political systems and provided a united front against the economic power of the United States on one side, and the threat of communism on the other side. Knowledge Is Power In The Invisible Man, By Ralph Ellison Abtin Ghajarieh Sepanlou ENG 4U Ms. Smith 19 July 2017 Mind Does Not Matter The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family . Although this phrase may contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily reject the notions of social responsibility and social education. This is due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a large group of people based on a variety of prejudices. Using this perspective can help better understand the message of the novel, The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison. The story follows the life of a black man during the late 1920 s or early 1930 s, when racism was at its peak. In this novel, the author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not necessarily equal power, but those who lack knowledge abuse their power. The author accomplishes this by showing us the power of ignorance, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power. Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator s speech in the beginning of the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. • 32. Consciousness Arguments Against Turing s Test The consciousness argument is the strongest objection against the Turing s test. Machines act by interpreting symbols based on given rules. If they follow rules and interprets symbols, then the programmers influence their actions, not their own thoughts and feelings. Since their own thoughts and feelings do not influence their actions, they are not truly aware of how these actions can affect their emotions and the surroundings. If machines are not aware of their behaviors, they are not conscious. Without consciousness, machines cannot have minds. Therefore, the Turing s test is not sufficient to prove that machines can think. Turing doesn t respond directly to each premises of this argument, instead he responds to its conclusion that machines are not conscious. To begin with, Turing follows the consciousness objection s line of thought and states that the only possible method to know if a machine can think or not is to literally become that machine.
