Want to change the world? Then get a license to RHoK! Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK) is a global initiative to create practical open source solutions to humanity's toughest challenges. Organized by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, HP, NASA and the World Bank, RhoK brings together thousands of the best and brightest developers from around the world - like YOU - to participate in fast–paced and competitive marathon coding events resulting in real applications that are making an impact on humanity. The RHoK community has grown rapidly over the past 2 years, with 3000 participants from 43 cities who have worked on 214 distinct solutions. This talk will bring together "RHoKstars" to provide an overview of the initiative, discuss some of the solutions developed, describe how the SxSW community can contribute to the effort and most importantly, brainstorm about what is next.

A presentation on “7 Tips to effectively communicating with the next generation” given at the NASA Education Stakeholder’s Summit in Chantilly, Virginia on 01 December 2011. The presentation explores how to engage "true digital natives" in your mission using a framework developed by historians Strauss and Howe that explains the cyclical nature of generations in Anglo-American history. The annual NASA Education Stakeholders’ Summit was first created in 2010 to bring together high-level representatives of NASA, other Federal Agencies, academia and industry to raise awareness around initiatives for STEM education and workforce development and provide forums for dialogue to enhance those initiatives. This year’s Summit explored how a new infrastructure can be shaped for the STEM workforce of tomorrow for NASA and other organizations, and the message that it is “cool” to work in STEM fields in the Federal Government, NASA, academia and industry.

A presentation on the “NASA Open Government Initiative and Social Media Engagement” given at the Gov 2.0 Conference at the National Convention Center in Canberra, Australia on 25 October 2011. The presentation explores how YOU can engage citizens in your mission by better understanding on how to harness the opportunities Open Government presents. The objectives of the presentation include a) identifying the needs of your community to understand how to better communicate and engage them; b) engaging citizens through the use of Web 2.0 technology; and c) moving towards an open and transparent government.

Official proceedings from the NASA Open Source Summit held in March 2011. The document provides a snapshot of activities during the Summit and summarizes the major issues and recommendations received not only from the in-person attendees, but also through the various online venues utilized during the event. The Summit was a resounding success, with over 700 in-person and remote attendees contributing to 66 unique proposed solutions.

"Digital Natives (people who have grown up in a connected world) have different attitudes, approaches and habits than those in preceding generations and will soon be a major part of society’s workforce. How does the public sector need to change to attract these people and provide them with a working environment which will let them fulfill their potential? This session will compare and contrast Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, and Digital Skeptics and explore how the public sector might change, firstly, as efforts are made to attract Digital Natives and secondly, as Digital Natives becomes more and more influential in how things get done."
