1. What is the Best Leadership Style?
Please read each of the scenarios below and decide what leadership
style would best fit the situation. Please write out the reasons why
you have chosen a particular style and be prepared to share your
answers with the group.
Scenario 1:
You have to lead a group of uniformed police officers involved in
policing a riot situation. Everyone must act quickly and obey orders.
Scenario 2:
You are leading a team of very experienced detectives investigating a
murder. All of the detectives on the team are aware of the enquiries
they have to complete.
Scenario 3:
You are asked to lead a team of experienced fire fighters looking at
alternative shift systems. You start the process with an initial
meeting to share ideas.
Scenario 4:
You are leading a platoon of army personnel on a mission to free a
number of hostages held captive by Taliban terrorists. It is
imperative the mission is carried out quickly as there is concern for
the safety of the hostages.
Scenario 5:
You are the newly appointed leader of a group of neighbourhood
police officers who have all worked in the neighbourhood for some
years. You have to plan the next month’s policing targets.
