InnovationLeader.com surveyed executives at 50 corporations across a range of industries in the U.S. and Europe to understand how the innovation function is structured. Survey was conducted in July & August 2013.
2. About this survey:
We asked 50 executives responsible for innovation-related initiatives
at U.S. and European companies to complete a very brief survey
about how the innovation function works within their organization.
Respondents represented a wide array of industries including
healthcare, financial services, software, manufacturing, advertising,
publishing, pharmaceuticals, apparel, construction, food/consumer
products, and government. The survey was conducted in July/
August 2013.

3. CINO is the the acronym
often used for Chief
Innovation Officer. The 63
percent in our survey is an
increase from 43 percent
reported by a CapGemini
survey in 2012, which itself
was up from 33 percent in
their 2011 survey.
4. None of the respondents
in our survey said they
report to their company’s
Chief Information Officer
or Chief Scientific Officer.
5. We defined an “internal”
focus as primarily geared
to sourcing ideas from
employees or improving
internal processes, and
“external” as oriented to
partnerships, investments,
or open innovation. Hybrid
is a mix of the two.
6. Revenue generated by
new products and services
is the most commonly-
used metric, according to
innovation executives. 27
percent of respondents
said they are in the process
of developing metrics.
7. A surprising 53 percent of
respondents said that the
top innovation executive
either reports to the board
in person each quarter, or
supplies information to the
board.
8. Innovation Leader is an independent information service
