ΦΣΡ Registration Packet

       Columbus, Ohio
      July 14-17th, 2011
Dear Phi Sigma Rho,

We are very excited to have you join us for National Convention 2011! This
year our theme will be United in a Common Goal. This convention is going to
be held jointly with Triangle Fraternity in Columbus, Ohio on July 14th-17th.

National Convention 2011 will offer an assortment of opportunities to our Phi
Sigma Rho active and alumnae sisters. We have some great leadership
programming planed and lots of fun social activities to bond and mingle with
your fellow sisters. We will kick off on Thursday with our State of the Sorority
and State of the Foundation addresses followed by updates from each chapter.

Friday is filled with great LEAP workshops during which you can obtain a LEAP
certification by following the guidelines explained within this packet. Friday
evening we have our College Night banquet followed by our Dive-in movie
which will be held at the outdoor rooftop pool!

On Saturday, join your sisters for the Legislative Session to elect the 13th
National Council followed by our awards luncheon. In the afternoon we will
get to preview and practice the ritual updates at our ritual session. That night
we will be holding our semi-formal banquet; the theme this year is the Black &
White Ball so wear your all black or all white ritual attire.

This packet provides detailed information on our Convention activities; please
do not hesitate to contact us for more information! We look forward to seeing
you in Columbus and learning and having fun together!

LEAP Workshops
For Actives and Alumnae:

PSR Ideals: What’s it to ya?
with Christine Jackson
Whether you are a new member of Phi Sigma Rho or a seasoned alumna, sit in on this
discussion of promoting the ideals upon which Phi Sigma Rho was founded. What does it mean
to fulfill your obligation as a sister of Phi Sigma Rho and how are you fulfilling that obligation?
Attend this forum to share ideas and get ideas from fellow sisters!

What’s Your Plan?
with Edua Dickerson
Most of the time, we think that things will get better with time or that things will simple work
themselves out. Don’t you want to look back and be able to say you made it happen for
yourself, for your cause or simply for what matters to you? In this session we are going to set
goals, short-term and long-term, and define the steps needed to make those goals into
achievements.

Sisterhood Lasts a Lifetime
with Leanne Smith
When you joined Phi Sigma Rho, you signed up for a lifetime connection and developed bonds
that will last for years. What has sisterhood meant to you? In this session, join your sisters in
discussing what it means to be a sister, how to sustain those bonds, and what you can do to
ensure that you and your sisters get the most out of your lifelong commitment to Phi Sigma
Rho.

Robert's Rules: New Business, Motions, and Voting (MANDATORY FOR DELEGATES)
with Marcie Aydelotte / Hillary Emer
Tired of unruly and inefficient chapter meetings? Do you find yourself and your chapter just
winging the whole New Business part of your meetings? In this session we'll cover the Robert's
Rules basics and go through the proper way to make and pass a motion, handle amendments
and create the proper voting atmosphere in both chapter and National meetings!

For Actives:

Personal Consequences: Understanding the Personal Liability of Your Greek Experience
with representatives from Willis Insurance
In this session, you will learn to understand why risk management is important for you, your
chapter, and Phi Sigma Rho nationally, as well as how best to mitigate risks. The presentation
will provide identification of large loss incidents, exposing the criminal and civil judgments
for past fraternity/sorority cases. Discussion will highlight overall perception of the Greek
community, reducing the dangers of alcohol abuse and simple steps to minimize and control
risk. Learn the responsibility of yourself and your chapter in relation to risks of
undergraduate life or policy infractions.

                                              *12*

regional conferences, sisterhood retreats, and formals to smaller events like socials or
outreach. Learn more about the importance of advertising, especially for events open to your
campus/Greek community or to which you are inviting alumnae. We’ll also discuss strategies
and ideas for fundraising for charities as well as for chapter activities (such as attending
National Conventions!)

Making the Most of Your Membership Education
with Jennifer Andy
This session will focus on the importance of membership education in order to build a strong
sisterhood. Join your sisters for an active discussion about the obstacles encountered in
membership education and overcoming those difficulties. The session will also provide an
opportunity for sisters to provide feedback to Nationals, in order to explore methods for

we will discuss the progress of our chapters along with the changes that may occur. This
activity is great for discussion and ideas regarding how your chapter has changed throughout
the years and how alumnae have shaped their sisters’ decisions. We also will learn how to
apply the hands-on activity to help overcome obstacles in our everyday lives. Change has
affected all of us through our pasts and inevitably in our futures; with this session we will
learn how to adapt to change with ease.

Mustang Sallies: Achieving Success on Your Own Terms
with Sara DaSilva
Mustang Sallies, by Fawn Germer, is a book about women who are unwilling to "run with the
herd." They are "women who question the rules, challenge the status quo, and dare to make a
little noise." As Phi Rho sisters, many of us are "Mustang Sallies" by nature. Join Sara DaSilva
for an interactive session on what it means to be a "Mustang Sally" and how to harness the
power of being such a woman. Come ready to share your stories and emotions about what it's
like to be a social, strong, woman in a male dominated work culture.

Sticky Situations: Managing Conflict Constructively
with Edua Dickerson
Dealing with difficult people; stuck in a difficult situation and feeling like there is no way to
make things better? Well stop right there! All situations can be improved if you have the right
tools. Join us, as we talk about the steps you can take to turn that difficult colleague into your
advocate and how to turn what looks like a hopeless endeavor into a learning experience. It is
all about your perception and how you choose to approach it. Let us help you get to a way of
thinking with the right tools that will make these obstacles into stepping stones!

Service Never Stops
with Stephanie Gagliardi
Philanthropy is more than just participating in mandated service hours and raising money for a
cause. Philanthropy is a pillar of Greek Life and can be a lifelong commitment. Join our panel
discussion with Phi Sigma Rho alumnae featuring women who actively participate in service
activities. If you have ever thought about giving back to the sorority as an alumna volunteer,
getting more involved with our national philanthropies (Phi Sigma Rho Foundation, Leukemia
and Lymphoma Education and Awareness, and Scouting for Girls), or general service events in
your community at large, then this is the workshop for you! Learn about what these women
do, opportunities for you to make a difference, and share your own advice and experiences as
well! From being a Resumania volunteer, to starting an annual charity event from scratch,
leading a Girl Scout troop, participating in a Penguin Plunge, involvement in your company
sponsored service events, or donating to the Phi Sigma Rho Foundation, there is something for
everyone in this workshop!

Service Activities
Penguin Drive

This year we will have our THIRD ANNUAL Penguin Drive at the 2011 National Convention!
Even if you won’t be able to make it to the Convention, consider picking something up to
donate. Donations can be dropped off all weekend in the Phi Rho Lounge.

Last year we donated OVER $500 worth of penguin themed items and other toys to Cleveland
Clinic Children’s Hospital and Providence House!

This year we will be sending donations to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. For
suggested items, visit
http://www.nationwidechildrens.org/wish-list-gifts-to-buy.
Note that areas of high need include Teens and
Infants/Toddlers.

Guidelines include –
   • No used toys
   • Must be unwrapped
   • No stuffed animals that are not tagged
   • Stuffed animals must be new and recently purchased
   • No candy or food

Service Workshop

In addition to supporting Nationwide Children’s Hospital with our donations, the Service
Workshop will also benefit the children there!

The hospital likes to have craft components ready for kids to assemble and create, and they
also keep activity bags on hand. We will be helping prepare some components and put
together activity bags. There will be various stations at which you can participate, including:
    • Picture Files: cutting out and categorizing pictures from magazines (e.g., people, food,
       sports, animals, etc.)
    • Monthly Calendars: provide the outline for monthly wall calendar so that children can
fill in the month and numbers and then decorate it
    • Activity Bags: assemble bags with crafts and fun things to do (e.g., word searches,
       puzzles, crayons, coloring pages, etc.)
    • Banner Making: Create and decorate fun banners to be hung for the children, including
signs for Birthdays, Holidays, and basic “Congratulations”

We will provide almost all of the supplies, but we will need people to bring magazines that
can be cut up for the picture files! Otherwise, come ready to spend time with your fellow Phi
Rhos while supporting great kids who deserve some smiles!

the local Ohio alumnae for hosting such a spectacular event. Please come and enjoy some
refreshments, socialize with other alumnae, and learn about the great things going on with the
Foundation.

Silent Auction
The Foundation will be hosting a Silent Auction to generate funding for its programs and
operations. All Phi Sigma Rho Sorority and Triangle Fraternity members are encouraged to
participate. At the silent auction, you will be able to bid on items in silence... on paper. The
closer it comes to the end of the auction, the more the bids may go up, so you'll have to keep a
close eye on that item you want to win! Come to the auction frequently to make sure you get
that special item. The silent auction starts at Friday at 8am and lasts until 8pm. We'll be
available on Saturday for you to pick up items that you may have WON!

Star Pyramid -- Remembering our Sisters!
Each year, the Foundation brings our Star Pyramid for you to add your special star in
remembrance of a sister who was not able to come to Convention. For each star, we ask for a
small donation. You will get to decorate your star and hang it on our Pyramid. In addition,
you'll get to write a short postcard that we will send out to your sister to notify her of your
generous donation. We have a beautiful Pyramid made by our sister Julie Hayden (Pitt-Zeta), so
we hope that you will consider adding a couple of your stars!

Awards
The Phi Sigma Rho Foundation will be giving out several Merit and Leadership Scholarships this
year at the Awards Luncheon.

What does it mean to fulfill your obligation as a sister of Phi Sigma Rho and how are you fulfilling that obligation? Attend this forum to share ideas and get ideas from fellow sisters! What’s Your Plan? with Edua Dickerson Most of the time, we think that things will get better with time or that things will simple work themselves out. Don’t you want to look back and be able to say you made it happen for yourself, for your cause or simply for what matters to you? In this session we are going to set goals, short-term and long-term, and define the steps needed to make those goals into achievements. Sisterhood Lasts a Lifetime with Leanne Smith When you joined Phi Sigma Rho, you signed up for a lifetime connection and developed bonds that will last for years. What has sisterhood meant to you? In this session, join your sisters in discussing what it means to be a sister, how to sustain those bonds, and what you can do to ensure that you and your sisters get the most out of your lifelong commitment to Phi Sigma Rho. Robert's Rules: New Business, Motions, and Voting (MANDATORY FOR DELEGATES) with Marcie Aydelotte / Hillary Emer Tired of unruly and inefficient chapter meetings? Learn more about the importance of advertising, especially for events open to your campus/Greek community or to which you are inviting alumnae. We’ll also discuss strategies and ideas for fundraising for charities as well as for chapter activities (such as attending National Conventions!) Making the Most of Your Membership Education with Jennifer Andy This session will focus on the importance of membership education in order to build a strong sisterhood. The session will also provide an opportunity for sisters to provide feedback to Nationals, in order to explore methods for improving the current membership education process. For Alumnae: Understanding and Accepting Change with Nicole Bylsma and Edua Dickerson Tired of the usual alumnae sessions? This particular session will help you liven up your day with a hands-on activity with your fellow alumnae from across the country! Get to know your fellow sisters as you talk about how situation and experience affects progress. In this session we will discuss the progress of our chapters along with the changes that may occur. This activity is great for discussion and ideas regarding how your chapter has changed throughout the years and how alumnae have shaped their sisters’ decisions. We also will learn how to apply the hands-on activity to help overcome obstacles in our everyday lives. Change has affected all of us through our pasts and inevitably in our futures; with this session we will learn how to adapt to change with ease. Mustang Sallies: Achieving Success on Your Own Terms with Sara DaSilva Mustang Sallies, by Fawn Germer, is a book about women who are unwilling to "run with the herd." They are "women who question the rules, challenge the status quo, and dare to make a little noise." As Phi Rho sisters, many of us are "Mustang Sallies" by nature. Join Sara DaSilva for an interactive session on what it means to be a "Mustang Sally" and how to harness the power of being such a woman. Come ready to share your stories and emotions about what it's like to be a social, strong, woman in a male dominated work culture. *13*
  • 14. Sticky Situations: Managing Conflict Constructively with Edua Dickerson Dealing with difficult people; stuck in a difficult situation and feeling like there is no way to make things better? Well stop right there! All situations can be improved if you have the right tools. Join us, as we talk about the steps you can take to turn that difficult colleague into your advocate and how to turn what looks like a hopeless endeavor into a learning experience. It is all about your perception and how you choose to approach it. Let us help you get to a way of thinking with the right tools that will make these obstacles into stepping stones! Service Never Stops with Stephanie Gagliardi Philanthropy is more than just participating in mandated service hours and raising money for a cause. Philanthropy is a pillar of Greek Life and can be a lifelong commitment. Join our panel discussion with Phi Sigma Rho alumnae featuring women who actively participate in service activities. If you have ever thought about giving back to the sorority as an alumna volunteer, getting more involved with our national philanthropies (Phi Sigma Rho Foundation, Leukemia and Lymphoma Education and Awareness, and Scouting for Girls), or general service events in your community at large, then this is the workshop for you! Learn about what these women do, opportunities for you to make a difference, and share your own advice and experiences as well! From being a Resumania volunteer, to starting an annual charity event from scratch, leading a Girl Scout troop, participating in a Penguin Plunge, involvement in your company sponsored service events, or donating to the Phi Sigma Rho Foundation, there is something for everyone in this workshop! *14*
  • 15. Service Activities Penguin Drive This year we will have our THIRD ANNUAL Penguin Drive at the 2011 National Convention! Even if you won’t be able to make it to the Convention, consider picking something up to donate. Donations can be dropped off all weekend in the Phi Rho Lounge. Last year we donated OVER $500 worth of penguin themed items and other toys to Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and Providence House! This year we will be sending donations to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. For suggested items, visit http://www.nationwidechildrens.org/wish-list-gifts-to-buy. Note that areas of high need include Teens and Infants/Toddlers. Guidelines include – • No used toys • Must be unwrapped • No stuffed animals that are not tagged • Stuffed animals must be new and recently purchased • No candy or food Service Workshop In addition to supporting Nationwide Children’s Hospital with our donations, the Service Workshop will also benefit the children there! The hospital likes to have craft components ready for kids to assemble and create, and they also keep activity bags on hand. We will be helping prepare some components and put together activity bags. There will be various stations at which you can participate, including: • Picture Files: cutting out and categorizing pictures from magazines (e.g., people, food, sports, animals, etc.) • Monthly Calendars: provide the outline for monthly wall calendar so that children can fill in the month and numbers and then decorate it • Activity Bags: assemble bags with crafts and fun things to do (e.g., word searches, puzzles, crayons, coloring pages, etc.) • Banner Making: Create and decorate fun banners to be hung for the children, including signs for Birthdays, Holidays, and basic “Congratulations” We will provide almost all of the supplies, but we will need people to bring magazines that can be cut up for the picture files! Otherwise, come ready to spend time with your fellow Phi Rhos while supporting great kids who deserve some smiles! *15*

The closer it comes to the end of the auction, the more the bids may go up, so you'll have to keep a close eye on that item you want to win! Come to the auction frequently to make sure you get that special item. The silent auction starts at Friday at 8am and lasts until 8pm. We'll be available on Saturday for you to pick up items that you may have WON! Star Pyramid -- Remembering our Sisters! Each year, the Foundation brings our Star Pyramid for you to add your special star in remembrance of a sister who was not able to come to Convention. For each star, we ask for a small donation. You will get to decorate your star and hang it on our Pyramid. In addition, you'll get to write a short postcard that we will send out to your sister to notify her of your generous donation. We have a beautiful Pyramid made by our sister Julie Hayden (Pitt-Zeta), so we hope that you will consider adding a couple of your stars! Awards The Phi Sigma Rho Foundation will be giving out several Merit and Leadership Scholarships this year at the Awards Luncheon. *16*
