1. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning
SUBJECT AREA: Biology GRADE LEVEL: Sec 3 Express
Name of Teacher: Toh Siew Fang Jane
LESSON TITLE: Cell Division- Mitosis and Meiosis TIME ALLOTTED: 60mins in lesson
Task outside of lesson: 30mins
LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Mitosis & meiosis are two cell reproduction processes that follow a sequential progression. Students are not able to
observe the entire process by using only a single prepared microscope slide. The conceptualization of the entire
process can be accomplished, however, by computer simulations.
In this web-based student centered lesson, students will learn about the 2 processes through a series of animation,
realtime microscopy video and interactive games, accompanied by worksheets to scaffold them in the guided-discovery
learning.
The animated illustration allows students, especially visual learners, to visualize the phases of cell division. The use of
realtime microscopy video made it visually alive for students to observe what happens at the microscopic level. The
interactive games helps to test for understanding and to familiarize students with the concept taught earlier with
animation and realtime microscopy. This effectively engages and motivates students in their learning.
The lesson engages students in their self-directed learning, where learning is presented through animation and graphic
organiser for visualization and construction of mental schemas, in tandem with knowledge construction with
scaffolding. Students will have to synthesize and integrate information gained from internet into the graphic organizer.
The lesson also promotes the use of a variety of collaborative learning techniques to allow peer review and articulation
amongst students.
Formative assessments are carried out in the form of online quiz and the creation of mitosis/meiosis dance.
Through the dance choreography, students are engaged and challenged to construct their own meaning of the concepts
of mitosis and meiosis, and at the same time, think creatively about the processes in a 3D sense. This helps to
consolidate and reinforce students’ learning, and therefore greater retention of knowledge.

2. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning
1) Guided discovery through the internet
Students will explore the 6 websites (animation, real time microscopy video, interactive games) for mitosis & meiosis
separately, with worksheets to guide them along and to scaffold their learning.
3. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning
A timer given is used using digital timer displayed on projector to ensure students are on task for each activity. At the
end of the animation & real time microscopy (for both mitosis & meiosis), teacher will post questions which serve as a
feedback to how much the students have understood from exploring the websites, and at the same time, help to clarify
any misconceptions.
2) THINK-PAIR SHARE. SYNTHESIS & COMPARE
Students are to pair up to synthesize what they have learnt. They will have to compare and contrast mitosis and
meiosis on the graphic organizer document, by looking at an animation which shows both processes simultaneously side
by side. The animation and graphic organizer helps to make meaningful learning with scaffolds to help students to
organizer and analyze the information they had learnt, in a collaborative manner. Some students will be asked to
present their graphic organizer and classmates are encouraged to add on or challenge their peer’s organizer, which
helps to stimulate critical thinking amongst the students.
5. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning
3) FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
To evaluate students’ on-going performance & understanding, a formative assessment on meiosis and mitosis will be
conducted through a quiz using online survey tool surveymonkey. The immediate collection of responses and feedback
allow teacher to analyse results immediately with class.
4) VIDEO-MAKING ASSIGNMENT: So-you-think-you-can-dance
Students are tasked, in groups of 10, to create a mitosis and meiosis dance, in which they have to construct their own
meaning and understanding of the concepts of mitosis and meiosis, and to think creatively about the processes in a 3D
sense. Cooperative learning is encouraged with online peer review. This helps to consolidate and reinforce their
learning, at the same time, allow for greater retention of knowledge.

CLASSROOM LAYOUT AND GROUPING OF STUDENTS:
The lesson is conducted in a Computer lab. Every student will be stationed with one computer terminal.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1) Identify and describe the main stages of mitosis in a living cell.
2) Explain what happens when mitosis is uncontrolled.
3) Identify and describe the main stages of meiosis in a living cell.
4) Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis.
5) Create a video showing the process of mitosis and meiosis

STUDENT’S PRESENT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
( Do the students have the adequate knowledge to complete the lesson successfully? What pre-requisite skills must
the students have to complete the lesson content? Include technology skills.)
Able to record video (either using Vado or their own videocamera), able to operate the browser
SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES:
1. Additional activities to expand the lesson
2. Remediation activities for the student needing more instruction and practices
3. Assignments
Assignment: So-you-think-you-can-dance video creation
ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:
How will you measure the student’s success? Formally or informally? Formal evaluation of student work requires that
a grade is taken while informal might be monitoring of work, or class discussion. This section should contain a
description of the assessment process, the criteria for achievement, and performance levels. The criteria should
directly align to objectives and instruction. Describe your plan for providing feedback to your students.
Assessment 1: Online quiz using surveymonkey
Assessment 2: Group Project
In groups of 10, students will be tasked to participate dance competition “So you think you can Dance.” Each
group is to perform a “chromosomal dance” that illustrates the major DNA events during mitosis/meiosis. The
class has been divided into 4 groups (2 groups of mitosis, 2 groups of meiosis). Each group will do a video-
recording of the “chromosomal dance” during the cell division.
Rules of competition:
1) Each group may use any kind of props which will aid in the dance to illustrate the sequence, movements and
phase shifting of the processes (e.g wearing bandanas of different colours to differentiate male and female
chromosomes).
2) The dance steps of the “chromosomes” must relate and illustrate important characteristics about
mitosis/meiosis (such as the stages, chromosomal separation, homologous chromosome, cell division)
3) Since it is a dance, music is essential! Every member in each group MUST participate and perform in the
dance.
9. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning
4) Upload the video onto class pbwiki.
Assessment & Evaluation
Each group will be judged by other 3 groups and the teacher. Students are to comment on the dance video based
on the criteria stated in the performance rubric. The final marks will be decided by peer evaluation (30%) and
teacher (70%).
