XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning

SUBJECT AREA: MALAY LANGUAGE                               GRADE LEVEL: 1A1
Name of Teacher: Hairudin Bin Djorimi
LESSON TITLE : Letter Writing                              TIME ALLOTTED: 1 hour

LESSON DESCRIPTION: (Write a concise description of what occurs in this lesson.)

In this lesson, the students….

will use their own recording devices (video or sound) to record interviews of their chosen subject in their respective
groups. The chosen subject must meet the criteria of possible facing a problem. The recorded video will be shown to
the class. The rest of the group will assess the video content based on the rubric given to them. The group will look
out for rich and relevant content. The presenting group will then ask the rest of the groups questions that for views
and suggestions to help the subject featured in the showcased video. After all the groups have presented, each
student will write a letter using MS Word, to discuss the issue and submit the assignment to the teacher via email.

CLASSROOM LAYOUT AND GROUPING OF STUDENTS:
(Where will the learning take place? How will the room be organized with the computers? How will the students be
grouped (class group, individuals, pairs, small groups, etc…)

The lesson will take place in classroom since there class size is small with 10 students in total. Each group will have 3
members with one group with 4 members. Total group is 3. Only one computer is used because the lesson design
only requires each group to present their video as long as 3 mins. Hence, most of the time the students will be
spending on discussion.

MATERIALS, RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGY:

    1. Materials and Resources for this Lesson (special devices)
         Technology Components for this Lesson

         This lesson allows students to have a freedom to use any preferred recording devices, e.g. vado, iPod, mobile
         phones, digital camera and video camera.


    2.     Web Site for this Lesson

         There is no specific website for this lesson other than YouTube. Students can choose to store their clip at
         YouTube for convenience of access after school.


    3. Computer Software for this Lesson

         Students can use any video editor software such Pinnacle Studio, Ulead, Audiocity and MS video if necessary.

STUDENT’S PRESENT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
( Do the students have the adequate knowledge to complete the lesson successfully? What pre-requisite skills must
the students have to complete the lesson content? Include technology skills.)


In this lesson the students need to know how to use their own preferred recording devices. Since editing is not
necessary, they may not need the editing skills. However, 80% of the students are equipped with editing skills using
different editing software. All of the students also have skills to use MS Word and email.

Students ability to use MS Word is emphasized because their final product of assessment if the letter. Their skills to
use MS Word will be assessed on alignment, paragraphing, paper layout format, font size, appropriate use of font, and
spacing.

Other pre-requisite skills the students need to have is the ability to search for a subject that has an issue with themes
of family, neighbours and social problems. They need to know the correct questions to ask to get more information
from the subject, presenters and audience. Lastly the students need to to know the format of the letter-writing.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

    1. Motivation:

        Explain the importance of the lesson to motivate the student. Relate lesson to previous lesson or real-life
        situation.

This lesson will create awareness among students of the issues and problems faced by responsible adult other
than their own family members. They will know the sentiments of the people on the ground. This will give them
new and creative ideas to write letter for the assignments and exams.



    2. Activities: (The sequential activities to happen in this lesson. It describes the teaching method to employ in
        learning the lesson.)

            Following the lessons, students with good letter will be shared with the students to understand the
            strength of their writing.


    3. Closure:

        Summary of the lesson and future lesson.

        The lesson was closed with a written assignment. The students will have to write a letter to send to the
        teacher via email. Future lesson will include students recording the situation instead of interview to add
        variety.




SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

    1. Additional activities to expand the lesson
    2. Remediation activities for the student needing more instruction and practices
    3. Assignments

1. Additional activities can include students voting their preferred choice of video.

2. No remediation activities required, as the students are all equipped with the appropriate skills for this lesson.

3. Students will continue to find 2 more subjects on individual basis for interview to be shared with the class for
compilation of resources.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:
How will you measure the student’s success? Formally or informally? Formal evaluation of student work requires that
a grade is taken while informal might be monitoring of work, or class discussion. This section should contain a
description of the assessment process, the criteria for achievement, and performance levels. The criteria should
directly align to objectives and instruction. Describe your plan for providing feedback to your students.

The students will be assessed formally and informally.

Informal Assessment (Class discussion)

Criteria
- Ability to interview subject with relevant content
- Clarity of digitally recorded resource
- Ability to answer questions confidently and defend the arguments soundly.

Process
Students will be given a rubric to rate each category of the criteria. After rating, the presenting group will be made
known of the rating and the students will share with them of their strength and areas for improvements.

Formal Assessment (Submission of Letter)
Criteria
- Ability to present sound and clear ideas.
- Ability to write with a standard format.
- Ability to use the language proficiently.

Process
The teacher will mark students’ assignments. Assignments are graded. Feedback from teachers will be written at the
footnote of the letter. Students also get a chance to see the teacher in person to find out their strengths and
strategies to improve the letter-writing skills.



STUDENT PRODUCTS:

What artifact(s) or products will result from the lesson? (such as a report, newsletter, diagram, slideshow, drawing,
etc)


At the end of the lesson, each student is assigned to write a letter. The letter will be typed using MS Word and email
to the teacher.

XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning SUBJECT AREA: MALAY LANGUAGE GRADE LEVEL: 1A1 Name of Teacher: Hairudin Bin Djorimi LESSON TITLE : Letter Writing TIME ALLOTTED: 1 hour LESSON DESCRIPTION: (Write a concise description of what occurs in this lesson.) In this lesson, the students…. will use their own recording devices (video or sound) to record interviews of their chosen subject in their respective groups. The chosen subject must meet the criteria of possible facing a problem. The recorded video will be shown to the class. The rest of the group will assess the video content based on the rubric given to them. The group will look out for rich and relevant content. The presenting group will then ask the rest of the groups questions that for views and suggestions to help the subject featured in the showcased video. After all the groups have presented, each student will write a letter using MS Word, to discuss the issue and submit the assignment to the teacher via email. CLASSROOM LAYOUT AND GROUPING OF STUDENTS: (Where will the learning take place? How will the room be organized with the computers? How will the students be grouped (class group, individuals, pairs, small groups, etc…) The lesson will take place in classroom since there class size is small with 10 students in total. Each group will have 3 members with one group with 4 members. Total group is 3. Only one computer is used because the lesson design only requires each group to present their video as long as 3 mins. Hence, most of the time the students will be spending on discussion.   • 2. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning MATERIALS, RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGY: 1. Materials and Resources for this Lesson (special devices) Technology Components for this Lesson This lesson allows students to have a freedom to use any preferred recording devices, e.g. vado, iPod, mobile phones, digital camera and video camera. 2. Web Site for this Lesson There is no specific website for this lesson other than YouTube. Students can choose to store their clip at YouTube for convenience of access after school. 3. Computer Software for this Lesson Students can use any video editor software such Pinnacle Studio, Ulead, Audiocity and MS video if necessary. STUDENT’S PRESENT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE AND KNOWLEDGE: ( Do the students have the adequate knowledge to complete the lesson successfully? What pre-requisite skills must the students have to complete the lesson content? Include technology skills.) In this lesson the students need to know how to use their own preferred recording devices. Since editing is not necessary, they may not need the editing skills. However, 80% of the students are equipped with editing skills using different editing software. All of the students also have skills to use MS Word and email. Students ability to use MS Word is emphasized because their final product of assessment if the letter. Their skills to use MS Word will be assessed on alignment, paragraphing, paper layout format, font size, appropriate use of font, and spacing. Other pre-requisite skills the students need to have is the ability to search for a subject that has an issue with themes of family, neighbours and social problems. They need to know the correct questions to ask to get more information from the subject, presenters and audience. Lastly the students need to to know the format of the letter-writing.
  • 3. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: 1. Motivation: Explain the importance of the lesson to motivate the student. Relate lesson to previous lesson or real-life situation. This lesson will create awareness among students of the issues and problems faced by responsible adult other than their own family members. They will know the sentiments of the people on the ground. This will give them new and creative ideas to write letter for the assignments and exams. 2. Activities: (The sequential activities to happen in this lesson. It describes the teaching method to employ in learning the lesson.) Following the lessons, students with good letter will be shared with the students to understand the strength of their writing. 3. Closure: Summary of the lesson and future lesson. The lesson was closed with a written assignment. The students will have to write a letter to send to the teacher via email. Future lesson will include students recording the situation instead of interview to add variety. SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES: 1. Additional activities to expand the lesson 2. Remediation activities for the student needing more instruction and practices 3. Assignments 1. Additional activities can include students voting their preferred choice of video. 2. No remediation activities required, as the students are all equipped with the appropriate skills for this lesson. 3. Students will continue to find 2 more subjects on individual basis for interview to be shared with the class for compilation of resources.
  • 4. XMSS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE: Using ICT in Teaching and Learning ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION: How will you measure the student’s success? Formally or informally? Formal evaluation of student work requires that a grade is taken while informal might be monitoring of work, or class discussion. This section should contain a description of the assessment process, the criteria for achievement, and performance levels. The criteria should directly align to objectives and instruction. Describe your plan for providing feedback to your students. The students will be assessed formally and informally. Informal Assessment (Class discussion) Criteria - Ability to interview subject with relevant content - Clarity of digitally recorded resource - Ability to answer questions confidently and defend the arguments soundly. Process Students will be given a rubric to rate each category of the criteria. After rating, the presenting group will be made known of the rating and the students will share with them of their strength and areas for improvements. Formal Assessment (Submission of Letter) Criteria - Ability to present sound and clear ideas. - Ability to write with a standard format. - Ability to use the language proficiently. Process The teacher will mark students’ assignments. Assignments are graded. Feedback from teachers will be written at the footnote of the letter. Students also get a chance to see the teacher in person to find out their strengths and strategies to improve the letter-writing skills. STUDENT PRODUCTS: What artifact(s) or products will result from the lesson? (such as a report, newsletter, diagram, slideshow, drawing, etc) At the end of the lesson, each student is assigned to write a letter. The letter will be typed using MS Word and email to the teacher.
