6. My Poem They shoved me in a hostel
As a guest of the Salvation Army,
With the company of drunks and punks
I’m a woman who has talent It was enough to send a poor lass barmy.
That they can’t take away.
I wonder why it had to be that all my life
They tried with drugs.
No one to love me
And needles to dope me every day.
No one to care
No one to see
Institutions stink,
No one to listen properly.
They make you want to puke,
The doctors think they’re it
So now my second life begun –
And they’ll read you like a book.
A new chance to live life through my son;
A reason for living I have found
I was kicked around and used
And it’s going to be better second time round.
Insulted and abused;
They messed my mind right from the start
So now I tell you
Treated me like a dirty tart.
I’ve got a voice
I’ve got a right to make a choice.
But it was them that did that,
I’m not a toy for you to abuse
It was them that scarred my mind,
I’m a woman of spirit and now I’ll refuse…To take
It was them that corrupted my innocence,
that abuse anymore.
And left me feeling that no one cared.

institutions. In 2010 there were
11,000 in smaller private
institutions at a typical cost of
£160,000 per person. We are
spending the same money on
institutions - but for about one
sixth of the people.
