This document provides an overview of the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system used by DMRC. The AFC system uses contactless smart cards and tokens to automate fare payments. It has a hierarchical architecture with central systems that communicate via WAN to station systems. The central systems include data centers that configure the system and store transaction data. Station systems include equipment like gates, ticket machines, and portable ticket decoders. The AFC system automates functions like access control, fare calculation, and stock management using the different fare media.
2. WHAT IS AFC SYSTEM?
Automatic Fare Collection System
System meant for automated
collection/computation of fare
Based on contact less technology
System consists of Semiautomatic
ticket vending machines, Automatic
entry-exit gates, Station server and
central server.
3. What AFC system does:
access control
ticket reading/writing
transaction collection and reports
stock management
Equipment supervision

6. Communicate with all Station Computers (SC) to collect
the details of the CSC and CST usage, accounting,
operational and auditing data
Store the transaction and audit data in order to assume
the central functions based on collected transactions
Maintain and distribute the DMRC equipment operating
data (EOD) which includes system parameters, fare table
and program to the equipment via the SC
Transmit to the equipment the Keys defined on the CC
Perform equipment administration
CC FUNCTIONS
7. Perform daily and monthly data backup
and housekeeping functions
Provide Master clock for clock
synchronization
Provide card history
Backup, archive and restore
Provide alarms to signal the operator of
the occurrence of any fault
8. Central Components
1. Data Center (DC)
composed of 2 servers clustered in order to provide
backup for each other
store data sent by station's computers
configure the entire AFC system
transmit operating parameters, blacklist, and agent list
to the AFC equipment via the station's computers
provides facilities for entire AFC system supervision
give detailed analysis of passenger traffic, transaction
history for any specific CSC
9. 2. Middle Ware Server
(MS)
relay the MCS master clock
system and broadcast the
time synchronization via
NTP over the LAN
Run BOM to generate
AFC business reports
3. Archiving Server (AS)
archive the data using
AfcServe Archive Software
in order to save on a DLT
tape partial or global data
from the central system

16. Station Components
Station Computer (SC)
• collate ticket usage transactions and update Audit
registers from AFC station equipment for transmission to
the Central Computer
• Maintain a local database of equipment activity to enable
local reports to be compiled.
• Distribution to the CC of the ticket transactions, audit
registers and events/alarm data
• Manage incidents (status and alarm monitoring) and
maintenance operations
• AFC equipment supervision
• Receive configuration and operating data from the Central
Computer distribute these to the AFC station equipment

19. How AFC works?
Passenger comes in free area to
purchase ticket for desired station
Token issued with Zone, date,time,
tom no. and station ID marked on it

23. Upon reaching destination station
passenger shows his token to Gate
SMA on paid area
Token is read and if found valid I.e.
for time and Zone allows exit by
accepting the token and opening flap
Otherwise display error message
