My slides introducing Jisc's support for asset sharing, at the 2014 Kit-Catalogue national user group. I talk about the rationale for Jisc becoming involved in supporting equipment sharing and the Jisc Kit-Catalogue pilot, and present some feedback from user group delegates about their experiences of equipment sharing. For more information about this initiative, please see http://www.jisc.ac.uk/research/projects/equipment-sharing

Jisc has developed a new approach to innovation called co-design. This approach involves Jisc customers and stakeholders much more closely in every stage of the innovation process from deciding which issues and opportunities to address to managing projects and ensuring institutions benefit from outputs. Jisc piloted this approach during 2013 and this session will reflect on the pilot and the projects that were included. From 2014 onwards, all Jisc innovation work will be managed using co-design. This session will allow delegates to explore the co-design approach and help shape the themes that we will focus on this year.

The Jisc Vscene videoconferencing service will be evolving over the coming year with help from our new strategic partner, Ajenta. With this new partnership, there will be improved focus on enhancing the teaching and learning experience. In this workshop you can discover how, through VScene, students learn through virtual classrooms, e-learning and MOOCS as well as enhanced interoperability with desktop applications and mobile devices. Teaching and learning has been enhanced for a community of 1200 physicists, academics, research staff and postgraduate students, whilst significantly reducing their annual teaching and collaboration overheads. How? By effective use of VScene.

Universities must make strategic decisions in order to thrive in a complex and changing environment. Topics faced are widely applicable across students, staff, research, estates and finance. The data landscape informing these decisions is vast, varied and sub-optimal. A revolution in data exploitation technologies, Jisc and HESA collaborated to deliver business intelligence services to members. This session demonstrates new interactive dashboards available to delegates and provide a glimpse at the immediate future for this service.

A presentation from Connect More 2020 by Kate Lindsay, head of digital education, University College of Estate Management. The University College of Estate Management has been delivering remote teaching and learning for over a century. Their current programme of digital transformation puts their students learning experience at it heart with a focus on flexibility and embedding active online pedagogies. Based on experience and evidence from practice, this presentation will outline the changes and methods we have put in place to design online education, along with a set of resources to share with the sector.

‘Digital learning’ is gaining traction in the higher education sector, as more tertiary institutions begin to offer individual units and entire programs in the online space. But what are the characteristics of digital learning that make it good? How does it engage students? And what are the characteristics of digital learning that make it appealing to learners?

This session will focus on the dilemmas and challenges of providing effective leadership skills for modern schools with digital ICT capabilities. It will review the selected challenges of engaging different generations of staff in ICT based learning and recommend strategies for effective leadership of ICT based schools. It will particularly focus on the issues of how a teacher-librarian and a library can assist to provide relevance and appropriateness of ICT based proposals and programs, and suggest ways to implement leadership policies which enable senior staff to remain accountable whilst all the changes enabled by ICT based learning are occurring within a school.
