Between 1900 and 1920 the African American
neighborhoods doubled.
They brought with them not only the
institution and business neccessary to
support themselves but a vast array of
talents and ambitions.
This area soon became known as "The Black
Mecca" and "The Capital of Black America."

UNIA-ACL
The Universal Negro Improvement
Association and African Communities
advocated the reuniting of all people of
African ancestory into one community.
NUL
National Urban League trained blacks to
work and to get an education.
12. Slavery
Slavery and oppression were the two main
reasons that African Americans started the
Harlem Renaissance.
13. What Happened During
One of the best speakeasies was a cotton club
where only African American entertainers
could perform at them.
Most performed Jazz at these clubs.

operated from 1923 to
1940.
