                                  ave you visited any biomes
lately? A biome is a large
                                  community of plants and
animals that is supported by a
                            certain type of climate. Biomes
                            like the Arctic tundra—where
                            cold winds buffet anything
                             that appears on the barren
                             landscape—are treeless. Many
                             other areas in the world
                             are covered with different
kinds of trees. Here are three
                              types of forest biomes.

s is her habit, architect Maya Lin stayed away from the
crowds—and the limelight. She stood behind the tinted
windows of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery,
Alabama. Outside, hundreds of visitors arrived at the site for the
opening of the Civil Rights Memorial, which Lin designed. ‘‘I like
standing back quietly,’’ Lin said. ‘‘You create your message, and
then it is out there on its own.’’
Lin’s message can be found in the memorial’s exhibits. This
memorial honors those who died fighting for equality during
the Civil Rights Movement. Some visitors reached out to touch
the names of loved ones carved into a black granite disk. Their
faces were wet with tears. ‘‘I’m so thankful,’’ said Sarah Salter,
whose husband, Willie Edwards, Jr., was killed in Montgomery in
1957. ‘‘At last he’s being recognized.’’

Persuasion Most kids love recess, but for Hannah Kristan, it
was her least favorite part of the school day.
“I never got to do anything except sit there,”
                           she recalls.
Hannah was born with a disease that kept the
bones in her back from forming properly. She
uses a wheelchair. Sadly, for kids like her, most
playground equipment is off limits. In fact, Hannah
is one of 5 million kids in the United States who
                          cannot use traditional playground equipment
because of some type of disability.

Summarize Main Idea and Details The main idea of an article is what the article is mostly about. Details give more information about the main idea. Maya Lin s is her habit, architect Maya Lin stayed away from the crowds—and the limelight. She stood behind the tinted windows of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. Outside, hundreds of visitors arrived at the site for the opening of the Civil Rights Memorial, which Lin designed. ‘‘I like standing back quietly,’’ Lin said. ‘‘You create your message, and then it is out there on its own.’’ Lin’s message can be found in the memorial’s exhibits. This memorial honors those who died fighting for equality during the Civil Rights Movement. Some visitors reached out to touch the names of loved ones carved into a black granite disk. Their faces were wet with tears. ‘‘I’m so thankful,’’ said Sarah Salter, whose husband, Willie Edwards, Jr., was killed in Montgomery in 1957. ‘‘At last he’s being recognized.’’ 196 pages 192A–203V pages 204A–227V pages 228A–255V WEEK 3 WEEK 4 WEEK 5 WEEK 6 Theme Theme Theme Test Strategy Remembering the Past The Caribbean Islands Cowboys and Cowgirls Author and Me Build Background Build Background Build Background Writing Persuasive Vocabulary Vocabulary Vocabulary artifacts, dedicated, elegant, blared, forbidden, suspended, vastness, equality, exhibits, site mischievous, reluctant, flickered, swerved, Word Parts: Inflectional hesitation, irresistible, enthusiasm, presence, Unit 2 Assessment, Endings gossiped horizon, ravine 25–42 Word Parts: Suffixes Analogies: Antonyms Phonics Phonics Phonics Comprehension Inflected Endings Words with /ô/, /ou/, /oi/ VCCV Pattern Make Inferences; Problem and Solution; Main Idea and Details Comprehension Comprehension Comprehension Vocabulary Strategies Strategy: Summarize Strategy: Summarize Strategy: Monitor Comprehension Dictionary: Idiom; Skill: Main Idea and Skill: Problem and Context Clues: Look Details Solution Skill: Make Inferences for Restatement; Word Parts: Inflectional Endings; Word Parts: Repeated Reading: Repeated Reading: Repeated Reading: Suffixes; Analogies: Punctuation Intonation and Pausing Tempo Antonyms APPROACHING APPROACHING APPROACHING Text Features / Literary The Oregon Trail: Nothing Is Impossible Nat Love: A Man of the Old Elements / Study Skills Westward Ho! and New West Photos and Captions; Hero and ON LEVEL ON LEVEL ON LEVEL Personification; Ellis Island: The Golden Where We Belong Alice Greenough: A New Using the Internet; Doors Woman of the Old West Chart; Repetition and Assonance BEYOND BEYOND BEYOND The Erie Canal: Low Bridge, All or Nothing William F.
