Using a novel in the literacy classroom; Surfing Mr Petrovic
It begins with the dramatic line "Everybody hates me." The author then proceeds to take us on a journey written in the first person from the point–of–
view of Tao Symonds, the eleven year old narrator and central character, as he reflects on the previous few months of his life. Tao thinks the whole
world is against him. He is suffering pressure from school, his parents and their new partners, as well as from his peers to join in theirescapades and to
top it all off, his dog has died. Tao feels confused and angry because his parents, middle aged surfer father, Greg, and his mother, a teacher called
Christine, are in the process of a break–up. Tao then lists his troubles and tells the reader of his present dread as he is taken by his mother ... Show more

Tao expects him to gouge out his eyes upon meeting him but Mr Petrovic "...did a remarkable thing. He patted me on the cheek" (Bowles, 1997, p.127).
This reveals to the reader that the text has been very one sided and there is another side to the story.
I enjoyed "Surfing Mr Petrovic" very much. This is an important point in teaching English and encouraging children to read for enjoyment. It is
unlikely that a teacher can inspire or encourage children to read if the teacher cannot display genuine enthusiasm for the text they are promoting
(Elements of an English Program: Sharing Texts, 2007).
Preceding the sharing of the text with students an explanation would occur as to why this particular text was being introduced. It would be stated that
the text will be read primarily for enjoyment but also to use the opportunity to explore the themes, structure and features of different text genres. The
title, cover and blurb would be used to encourage students to make predictions about the text and what it might be about (see appendix 1).
The approach to the reading of the novel would be varied. It is anticipated that the class study would begin with a shared reading of the opening chapter
to foster students' interest. A prepared reading by the teacher is usually much more involving than a hesitant reading–around–the–class activity (Sykes,
n.d.). The aim is to motivate each student to read the

The Perfect Escape
Ever since the creation of Alcatraz, it was made apparent that it would be the best prison ever constructed due to its location and the way it was built.
Many people attempted to escape the so–called inescapable prison, but only few people's efforts came to fruition. John and Clarence Anglin, Frank
Morris, and Allen West carefully planned and executed the perfect escape. To this day, this escape is considered a mystery. The origin of Alcatraz dates
back to 1775 when an explorer named Juan Manuel de Ayala discovered the island and named it Alcatraces. The name was later shortened to Alcatraz.
This island is located off the San Francisco Bay, and during the California Gold Rush the government set aside the island for a possible military ...

This attempt occurred during a bad storm and the Bay 's currents were especially fast and strong – most people believe Roe and Cole were swept out to
sea. Officially, they are listed missing and presumed dead (Alcatraz Escape Attempts).
Needless to say, escape from this island was near impossible. Although escape seemed impossible, many people still attempted it. John Anglin,
Clarence Anglin, Frank Morris, and Allen West are the four people behind the famous escape of Alcatraz. Frank Lee Morris is often thought of as the
mastermind behind the escape. Frank Morris was registered as prisoner #AZ1441. Morris was taken to Alcatraz in January of 1960. He was very well
acquainted with prisons. As a young child, he was an orphan and was passed around to different households. His criminal record began at the young age
of thirteen. He was in and out of prison from charges of theft to breaking and entering. Often times he would be back in jail less than a year after getting
out. Before going to Alcatraz he had already successfully escaped many prisons. Upon arrival, Morris began plotting how to escape. Morris was said to,
"have an I.Q. of 133, borderline genius, and was the mastermind of the escape plot" (Frank Morris: Only Alcatraz Escapee was from D.C.). John
Anglin's number was #AZ1476, Clarence Anglin's number was #AZ1485, and Allen West's was #AZ1335 (Frank Morris: Only Alcatraz Escapee was

Naomi Carter: A Short Story
She sat on her unmade bed, swishing her legs back and forth as she waited for Naomi to finish her makeup. Naomi had her face positioned directly in
front of the mirror, her hand remaining steady and fluid as she swept her black eyeliner across her eyelid. They had class in ten minutes, but Naomi
apparently ignored that fact. Carter knew her roommate spent a solid hour in front of the small mirror already; the girl curled her blonde hair in rippling
waves and took her time on applying her contour and highlight despite it being so early in the morning and their destination being a small poetry class.
Naomi was pretty though. That was her thing. Her trademark. Her smile was blinding, her hair was bouncy and soft, and her body possessed the grace
that you only got from the combination of years of dedicated dancing and natural talent. She didn't just apply a pink lip and some shimmery highlight to
her cheekbones though. She was naturally a force of beauty. Naomi chose to focus on that aspect of herself and Carter assumed that enhancing that
essence about her made Naomi feel good. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She didn't regret that decision. Sleep was good. Every extra minute added another dollop of sanity into her upcoming day, so she preferred to snuggle
up in bed rather than doll herself up. She wasn't Naomi, nor did she want to be Naomi. Carter was happy enough with her messy dark hair pulled up
into a loose ponytail that hung out the back of her blue baseball hat that had the word mermaid embroidered across the front. The hat was silly, offly
resembling something a modern day Little Mermaid would wear if she decided she was edgy and had second day hair. It was a gift from her little sister
from a few Christmases ago, and even without the sentimental attachment, Carter liked the hat by

Thalidomide In The 1950's
Thalidomide is a pharmaceutical that was introduced in the 1950's that was a seemingly simple drug that was prescribed to take care of many ailments.
Thalidomide was marketed to help with all kinds of symptoms from the flu to morning sickness to something as simple as helping you sleep. It was
considered a medical panacea. The drug had many key selling points. Not only could Thalidomide help with many symptoms, it was also marketed as
safe for everyone including pregnant women. When testing Thalidomide the LD50 seemed nonexistent. Additionally, as they increased the dose of
thalidomide to find a threshold, they found none. (The Shadow of Thalidomide, NYTimes). Thalidomide was sold over the counter in Germany. In

The Theory Of The Birth Territory Theory Essay
The theory I selected to apply to the above situation is the Birth Territory theory. This theory was created from empirical data collected by the authors
who serve as both midwives and researchers. It has a critical post–structural feminist undertone and elaborates on the ideas of Michel Foucault. The
Birth Territory theory predicts and elaborates on the relationships between jurisdiction (use of authority and influence), terrain (the birthing
environment), and personal emotional and physiological experience by the mother. This nurse–midwifery theory was chosen because both of the major
concepts directly correlate with the incident and are critical aspects of labor and delivery situations. MAYBE ELABORATE A diagram of the Birth
Territory theory can be seen in Appendix A. Key concepts included in this theory are terrain and jurisdiction. Sub–concepts listed under terrain include '
'surveillance room' and sanctum'. Sub–concepts listed under jurisdiction include 'midwifery guardianship', 'integrative power', 'midwifery domination',
and 'disintegrative power'. 'Terrain' signifies the aspects of the birth environment. These include physical and geographical features such as the birthing
furniture, as labor and birthing accessories, and personal support systems (birthing partner). 'Terrain' includes two sub–concepts: 'sanctum' and
'surveillance room'. A 'sanctum' is a homely birthing environment optimally designed to promote a private, healthy labor and birth. Amenities included

William Faulkner's A Rose for Emily and Susan Glaspell's...
The human mind is a fragile thing. It can be both strengthen and broken down easily. Actions and even words can be the thing to kill a person mentally.
Physically harming or locking away a person can lead to mental and bodily withdrawal. Harming a person with words can leave lasting effects and
always stay within a person's psyche. Oppressing and locking away a person's true nature or desires can cause someone to act in way that he or she has
never behaved before. When done by a loved one, it can affect a person even more. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" and Susan Glaspell's
"Trifles", two different women are kept mentally and physically locked away by a person who is supposed to love and protect them. Though Emily and

Emily By William Faulkner : A Symbol Of A Decaying Soul
For the duration of her time alone, Emily began to lose her mind and her self. The isolation began to take over her life and her appearances began to
degenerate. " Thus she passed from generation to generation–dear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil, and perverse." Similar to her avoidance and
neglect of her father's death she avoided herself physically surrendering to the arms of death. However, she soon realized she could not escape death.
Her hair was growing gray and her surrounding were disappearing. Faulkner describes Emily's hair growing "grayer and grayer until it attained an even
pepper–salt iron–gray, when it ceased turning." Gray is interpreted as a symbol of a decaying soul. Every time death approaches Emily, she loses a part
of herself. Soon after her father died her hair began to grow gray. When Homer dies, her grayish hair is intensified. Faulkner attempts to demonstrate
Emily's physical appearance as isolation takes over her deteriorating soul. Faulkner mentions "Up until the day of her death at seventy–four it was still
that vigorous iron–gray (hair), like the hair of an active man." Faulkner attempted to portray the idea that although she was alive with the capacity to
live a longer life, the essence of solitude has turned that opportunity gray. Faulkner acknowledges the similarities between Emily's gray soul and her
surroundings. The author describes her house as a "stubborn and coquettish decay." In comparison to the elegant houses in her neighborhood,

Stroke Risk Factors In Nursing
Recently, there has been a surge in reports of TIAs in rare instances such as healthy, young women. With lack of full understanding as to the reasoning
behind this, research found that strokes are not a geriatric disease as once believed (stroke association.org). Accordingly, Steven J. Kittner, M.D.,
director of the Maryland Stroke Center at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine in Baltimore declares that strokes can affect anyone at any
age (2004). Furthermore, he states that although there are common risk factors, some of the more hidden ones are the most dangerous, especially for
women under 55 (Kittner, 2004). He claims, matching other reports that these hidden risk factors leading to increased strokes include: migraines, oral

Media Coverage Of Afric The True Nature Of The Culture And...
Media coverage of Africa has exponentially increased in recent times, but the information is rarely completely accurate and objective. Initiatives to fund
global health projects has resulted in the creation of genius advertising campaigns that appeal to the emotions and humanity of privileged citizens in
first world countries. This campaign has also led to grave misconceptions about the true nature of the culture and lifestyle that Africans live. The first
misconception being that every person on the whole continent has the same religious beliefs, socioeconomic status, and environmental surroundings. A
satirical article named "How to Write about Africa" draws attention to the exaggerated usage of the wild landscape, naked mothers, starving children,
and white heroes who come in and save all of the dying babies in Africa (Wainaina, 1992). Anthropologists refer to this idea of portraying Africa in a
certain light in media to elicit a desired public reaction as a "single story." A majority of media articles in general only present a single story to appeal to
their target audience, but articles about Africa in particular are notorious for painting the picture of a poverty stricken continent that needs to be saved
and few people have enough knowledge about Africa to contest the media they see everyday. A recent articled named, "Mothers and babies at risk in
Apostolic church birth camps, where modern healthcare seen as 'heathen'" is an example of a piece of media that tells a

How To Write An Analytical Essay On A Rose For Emily
A Rose For Emily
An Analytical Essay
In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, both Emily and the town's citizens continually
demonstrate the nature of being frightened of progress as this dread of change is a reoccurring
subject inside the story. The story also embodies the effect tragedy can have on someone. The
author employs this message to show how Emily fails to adapt to inevitable historical and social
change in the South due to said environment and the tragic death of her father.
After Emily's father dies, she enters a state of dissent and the first insight the reader gets
of this is the point at which she is inquired about it. Her dad had been her overseer, supplier, and
protector. He was the most imperative figure in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She manages this sudden
change in way of life by doing things the way they've generally been done. "Emily lives in
isolation and was imprisoned previously" (Mohsin). In her mind, she doesn't think it is essential
nor likely for her to acclimate to the evolving society. In A Rose for Emily, Emily declines to pay
taxes and legitimizes herself by saying Colonel Sartoris has exempted her from this obligation.
What she doesn't know or imagines not to know is that "Colonel Sartoris had been dead almost
ten years." (Faulkner, 3) She doesn't acknowledge the progression of time; neither does she
acknowledge change, nor the misfortune that follows her, symbolized by the way that she
declines to participate with the modern postal service, noting the tax notice "paper of an archaic
shape, in a thin, flowing calligraphy in faded ink. Declining to adjust to the new way of life,
Emily needs to experience the ill effects of the loneliness and intensity of being separated from

The Media's Effect on Self-Esteem Essay
Everyone wants to look good; that is a given. What steps must people take in order to look their best? Does it only take a little bit of make up or maybe
a nicer dress shirt? Or does it require missing a few meals a day or purging what had been eaten previously? Society is growing fonder of the idea that a
perfect woman or man is skinny, most of the time skinnier than what is considered healthy. For example, when choosing between a skinny and a larger
woman for an ad about "the perfect body", people watching the commercial could not accept the larger woman as a suitable candidate. That is just how
society is currently. The stronger question, however, is whether pictures of skinny models in the media affects someone's self–esteem, or is the ... Show

That fact is something people these days need pressed into their brains so they will not be more worried about why they cannot look the way models do.
A model's career is centered on the preservation of his or her outer appearance (Sales, 1 Jan. 2010). There is no need for teens to feel pressures of a
warped body image. They cannot afford a stylist and makeup artist to prepare them for the day and touch them up as they go, nor do they need one to
(Sales, 1 Jan 2010). Even with such help, a model's day is not done without their photographs being airbrushed by computer artists. Sometimes the
models' body shapes are changed (Kowalski, 1 Mar. 2003). Although, it is understandable why teens do feel such pressure. A study on 3,200 girls in
Girlguiding, UK showed that "the most influential role models (said by 95 percent of the girls) were Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham" (Bawdon, 1
Oct. 2007). Both women are very skinny and successful as far as the modeling world is concerned. Unfortunately, "the fashion world is numb, looking
at models only as clothes hangers and failing to see if they are healthy of not" (Bawdon, 1 Oct. 2007). Boys and girls struggling with their growing
bodies could not come to understand that these men and women models are products of years of dieting, exercise binging, and possible eating disorders
to fix what the modeling world does not like about the way the models look. People of all ages have at least one thing they do not like

The Crisis Of Identity By William Faulkner
The Crisis of Identity Arguably one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, William Faulkner was plagued with a crisis of identity from a young
age. Inadequate in nearly every aspect of his life, Faulkner projected his personal shortcomings onto many of his characters, such as with Miss Emily
Grierson in "A Rose for Emily" and Wash Jones in "Wash." However, instead of victimizing these characters within his works, Faulkner chooses to rely
almost exclusively on the lowborn or outcasts, such as Wash and Miss Emily, as examples of heroism. Unconventional characters like Wash Jones and
Emily Grierson pose a test for Faulkner's readers. If the reader judges these characters with a conventional eye, seeing one other as a murderous ...

This isolation prevented Miss Emily from marrying at a suitable age, therefore leaving her ineligible after her father's death. In "Wash," Faulkner
depicts Wash Jones as being the very bottom of society, an image that is strengthened by the foil of Thomas Sutpen. Unlike Sutpen, a self–made man
who has risen to the top of society, Wash Jones is the lowest of the low. Wash's exceptionally degraded status at the bottom of the social heap makes it
so that even a Negro woman can block his entrance to Sutpen 's kitchen: "Stop right dar, white man. Stop right whar you is. You ain't never crossed dese
steps whilst Cunnel (Sutpen) here, and you ain't ghy' do hit now" (131). Wash Jones's monumental identity issues are further exemplified through his
cowardliness. When Colonel Sutpen goes off to fight for the Confederacy, Wash does not go; he instead tells anyone he can that he is looking after
Sutpen's plantation and slaves. However, "this was a lie, as most of them... to whom he told it, knew, though there were some who believed that [Wash]
really believed it, though even these believed that he had better sense than to put it to the test with Mrs. Sutpen or the Sutpen slaves" (130). Like
Faulkner, both Miss Emily and Wash Jones suffer from significant identity issues; however it is these issues that give them the potential to be the
atypical heroes that Faulkner crafts. Similar to

The Differences Between Latin America
Latin America is one region of the world known for its similarities across national borders, paired with stark differences. While Latin American
countries share cultural elements such as, language, religion, and a colonial history, each society has developed differently in terms of political,
economic, and social organization. One major difference across Latin America is individual nations relationships with family planning and abortion
systems. Each country 's stance on the morality of abortion, contraception, reproduction, and sexuality, differs from its neighbors and the region at
large. In some cases the difference is visible within national borders, such as in Mexico, where abortion is only legal inside the capital city (Fondo
Maria). In other cases the countries themselves are homogenous in law, but differ greatly from the legal positions of their neighbors. Due to such
variation it is impossible to claim that Latin America as a whole aligns with one attitude concerning family planning and abortion. Additionally, both
systems are simultaneously present in countries creating a complex and intriguing system of reproductive health. Due to this variety, this paper focuses
on Chile and Cuba as examples of two opposing extremes. In Cuba abortion is legal under all circumstances as compared to Chile, where abortion was
historically criminalized. These two country 's situations ask the question of how family planning programs and abortion rates connect with and
influence one

Emotionality In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner
"A Rose for Emily" is a short story in which William Faulkner, the author uses manipulation of time and the perspective of the townspeople to present
the life of a seemingly psychotic titular character, Emily Grierson. Emily, throughout her life, faces the hardships of loneliness and disconnection in life
through the deaths of her loved ones and the coming of a transforming society. When Emily's father dies, she loses the only person that was ever
associated with her, until she finally finds love for the first time in Homer Barron. However, Emily is crushed when she realizes Homer is not looking to
get together and kills him to preserve the only person she found love in. Although Emily might be considered evil and psychopathic on the basis of her
actions alone, knowing her father's aggression, her loneliness, and the townspeople's responsiveness towards her can lead one to react more
sympathetically towards Emily. To contextualize Emily's behavior, as a young lady, she was held back and restricted from engaging in many activities
and was symbolically shown to be in an abusive household. Through the townspeople's description of the titular character and her father, it is evident
that Emily grew up with a father who was very aggressive and completely unlike her, which forms the reader to feel sympathetically towards her,
because she had never experienced the love from a family anyone needs to grow and mature. The Townspeople "long thought of them as a tableau"
(Faulkner 3), or a spectacle, and saw Emily as an innocent person hindered in the family. Emily is also detailed as a "slender figure in white" (Faulkner
3), which expresses her purity compared to her father who was a "silhouette" (Faulkner 3), or a dark figure visible dominantly over the light figure of
Emily. The abusiveness and dominance of Mr. Grierson is shown as he has "his back to her and clutching a horsewhip" (Faulkner 3). Emily was fairly
different from most southern belle women at the time, as she was single until age 30 mainly because of "all the young men her father had driven away"
(Faulkner 3). As a human being, deaths are some of the most, if not the most, damaging to one's mental state, and it's clear to feel sympathetic towards

A Day At the Fair – Personal Narrative
It is Thursday, August 24th, the opening day of the Minnesota State Fair. I am here with my family, a friend and his mom, and one of my sister's friends.
It seems so long since last year's fair. I always look forward to the state fair, even though it's pretty much the same every year.

The Most Famous Prison Of The United States
Alcatraz was one of the most famous prison in the Unites States, located in the Californian San Francisco Bay. The prison was renowned for being
inescapable, and the m0ost high security prison of the time. This probably was due to it's location, which was on Alcatraz island, located around a mile
away from shore, surrounded by the supposedly shark infested, strong currents, ice cold water of the bay. Today, the prison is only used as a tourist

other residents were allowed to visit the families of the island, but with inmates, they were only allowed one visit per month, each visit had to be
approved directly by the warden of Alcatraz. In this visit, physical contact between the inmate and visitor was prohibited, as well as any discussion of
current events. The conversations were held via an intercom system, and an officer would usually be monitoring the conversation, though, sometimes
the officer would fail on this task. If there was any sort of inappropriate act or breaking of rules during these visits, the inmate would lose the privilege
of monthly visits, or possibly be put under some other form of punishment.
I managed to get ahold of one of the ex–residence of Alcatraz. Ernest Lageson was the son of one of the many guards of Alcatraz, and he lived on the
island for around two years when he was 10–12 years old. Mr. Lageson said that while there wasn't often a large amount of contact with the inmates,
occasionally the kids and other residence had the chance to speak with or see 'The

Institution Of Marriage
Eric Behm
Professor Justin Smith
English Composition 101
12/10/14
Institution of Marriage The idea of two people spending the rest of their lives together used to be an extremely common occurrence. Not to say that it
has changed completely, but the odds of a new marriage lasting more than 15 years is now less than half, and the cause of this might not be the
regression of the belief in the institution of marriage, but the growth of options and the pursuit and belief in true happiness. In the past 50 years, much
has changed in our perception of marriage. With the Sexual Revolution that occurred in the 1960's and 1970's, women became independent by gaining
control of their sexuality and sought higher education, higher paying jobs and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These clubs expanded throughout the 1960s, opening locations from New York to Los Angeles and further. (Farber, p. 30) There was a massive increase
in sexual encounters between unmarried adults during the Sexual Revolution. Men and women sought to reshape marriage by instilling new institutions
of open marriage, mate swapping, swinging, and communal sex. In addition, the growing number of marriages resulting in divorce––and the
consequent lessening of the stigma attached to divorce––provided another opportunity for men and women to engage in non–monogamous sexual
activity. With the relaxing attitude towards sexuality and the introduction of birth control, casual sex between adults was becoming very popular. The
development of the birth control pill is often suggested as a cause of the Sexual Revolution. The creation of birth control actually came from President
Lyndon B. Johnson's social reform policy called "The Great Society", which was mainly set to eliminate poverty and racial injustice. The FDA licensed
"The Pill" in 1960 as a means to eliminate poverty cause by overpopulation. (Bailey, p. 828) The pill was extremely popular and had over 1 million
users by the year 1962. With the wide adoption of birth control, women now became free to express their sexuality without the worry of unplanned
pregnancy.
The role of women in marriage in the 1950's was often to stay at home doing housework and

The Great Alcatraz Escape, 1962
One evening on the Twelfth of July, 1962, three men escaped the 'so–called' inescapable, maximum security prison that we know as Alcatraz. There are
many speculations related to whether they made it out alive or not. Either way, Frank Lee Morris, Clarence Anglin, and John Anglin accomplished an
amazing feat by making history with the most well thought out plan. There is a lot of evidence that proves, without a doubt, that these men made it out
alive, and that they did. Alcatraz is located in the middle of the San Francisco bay. It officially became a prison in 1934 and was built to house and
contain the most notorious criminals of that time. There were 14 escape attempts total involving 36 different prisoners. However, this one was by far the
most publicized and successful one. Frank Lee Morris was in Alcatraz for "Crimes ranging from narcotics possession to armed robbery." The Anglin
brothers were also both serving time for bank robbery according to alcatrazhistory.com. The escape originally started as a four man job. The other man,
Allen West, in for car theft. He was greatly disliked amongst all prisoners and guards alike. It was his dream and goal to escape. Allen West supplied
makeshift knives and all four of them slowly chipped away the concrete around their air vents. West's hole was made too big and was too noticeable so
it had to be covered up with new cement. Meanwhile they started to collect rain jackets that would later be used to create a raft and life

Birth Control Movement : Margaret Sanger
The birth control movement was created in early 20th century by Progressive and Socialist reformers like Margaret Sanger. She and other birth control
activists would fight for women's access to birth control through the 20th century which has gone on to affect American women today. In order to
analyze the affect that birth control has had on America, it is necessary to look at the works of Margaret Sanger and the birth control movement of the
progressive era. A good primary source with information that assesses the birth control movement is the collection of anonymous letters sent to
Margaret Sanger entitled Motherhood in Bondage, published in 1928. A secondary source used is the book Margaret Sanger And the Birth Control
Movement In America, written by Ellen Chesler in 1992. Lastly, a tertiary source is the PBS website, http://www.pbs.org/wg1}bh/amex/pill/timeline/
that discusses the timeline of birth control in America. If it were not for the progressive thinking and radical changes promoted by the socialist party,
birth control would have never been able to make its mark on American history First to promote the Birth Control movement was radical political
activist, Margaret Sanger. At nineteen years old, Margaret watched her mother of only fifty years old die from tuberculosis. Out of anger she
immediately blamed her father for putting the strain of eleven childbirths and seven miscarriages on her mother (PBS). This would begin her career for
helping women. Sanger

3 Major Human Resource Issues in Australia
Executive Summary This assignment is a portfolio, based on three current topics in Human Resource Management. The common theme of all the media
articles I reviewed is the recognition of people as an asset by the organisations to achieve their strategic goals and objectives. It is observed that
organisations are directing their efforts to recruit, retain and develop this asset. On reviewing the media articles, I have summarised the current HR
issues in the following topics. • Employee retention: A Link with the Bottom Line • Aging workforce: A determinant in HRP • Training &
Development: A powerful HRD strategy * The media articles are not attached however the ""REFERECES" section contains complete references for
each article. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George Bank has recently announced 12–months unpaid grandparents' leave in order to retain older staff and promote a family–friendly workplace.
Although compensation based strategies play a role in retention, there's more to keeping employees these days than offering cash incentives. Companies
are also realising the importance of organisational fit in retaining employees. Ochstein (2007) reports through "The Tribune Business Weekly" that
Daman Products, USA increased its employee retention rate since the company changed its hiring tactics to hire people with soft skills (ability to
communicate effectively, working in a team, display strong work ethic etc. ) and then train them for the technical skills. He indicates that when the
company first started, 34% of employees left within 2 years, this percentage is now down to 17. Summary of Key Findings Workforce turnover is a
complex and important issue amongst today's organisations. It is perhaps one of the most often cited cause of increased cost and decreased productivity.
No wonder people management has become an important frontier to extract and create more value from company assets. On comprehending the
articles, it has become evident that organisations have moved beyond the traditional approach of only investing in core business activities, to invest in
employee retention strategies. Many organisations, for example St. George Bank

How Did Frank Morris Failed To Escape Alcatraz Prison
I believe that that Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers who attempted to escape from Alcatraz prison died in their attempt to escape. This can be
proved by multitudes of evidence that was gathered over the time period from when they escaped and present day. Their search is still ongoing with
new evidence consistently being found that supports their unfortunate death while trying to escape. In addition the only form of evidence that supports
their successful escape was provided by a shady drug trafficker who may not be reliable as his business causes him to lie to be able to stay on top. I
believe that they failed to escape alcatraz firstly because a corpse was found floating in the bay which was found to be belonging to one of the escapees.

Essay on “a Rose for Emily” Literary Analysis
Cameron Barba
Ms. Carunchio
English 11B
12 February 2009
"A Rose for Emily" Literary Analysis In "A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner uses setting, character development, and stylistic devices to express the
mystery of Emily and the somewhat gossip–obsessed attitude the townspeople have towards Emily. Faulkner uses the setting to convey the mystery
surrounding Emily and her actions. For example, Faulkner writes " knocked at the door through which no visitor had passed since she ceased giving
china–painting lessons eight or ten years earlier." This quote shows the mystery of her house and how nobody knows what is in it or what goes on
inside of it. The townspeople are wondering what goes on behind Miss Emily's closed doors. Also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The townspeople are very interested in everything about her it seems and this is just another topic they gossip about. Another example of Miss Emily's
character change and how it relates to the mystery surrounding her is at first she starts going out "on Sunday afternoons driving in the yellow–wheeled
buggy and the matched team of bays from the livery table." Then, later on, she wants poison for some odd reason and says "I want arsenic, The druggist
looked down at her. She looked back at him, erect, her face like a strained flag.... What you are going to use it for. Miss Emily just stared at him."
(pg.651) Miss Emily is performing many strange actions that spark the interest of the townspeople. The inhabitants of the town try to give any
explanation for the mystery of why she's buying the poison, such as she is going to commit suicide. Her actions are just encouraging the townspeople to
gossip about the mystery. Faulkner utilizes stylistic devices such as imagery, and figurative language to express the townspeople and their feeling
towards Emily. For example, the author describes Miss Emily in great detail such as "her eyes, lost in the fatty ridges of her face, looked like two small
pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough as the moved from one face to another while the visitors stated their

To what extent is Lord of the flies a pessimistic book? Lord of the Flies highlights the flaws in human nature and shows how they affect the societies
we create. Lord of the flies has a pessimistic atmosphere throughout. Although to begin with the book seems to be quite positive, (the boys have fun and
are optimistic about being rescued) the atmosphere is slowly transformed into one of savagery, fear and betrayal. The ending of the book leaves the
reader feeling pessimistic about human nature and sorry for Ralph. The first time the boys meet together there is a positive atmosphere, the boys are

Piggy supplies a more realistic voice when he says, 'nobody knows where we are' This shows Piggy's brains but also creates fear for a moment within
the group, which is then broken by Ralph 'but this is a good Island.' However by now the reader is not so sure. The boys meet at the call of the 'conch'
which Ralph fishes out of the lagoon at the beginning of the book. In heralding the meetings the conch becomes a symbol of democracy, which is later
to be broken. Ralph feels powerful when he blows it 'his face was dark with the violent pleasure of making this stupendous noise'. To begin with all the
boys treat the conch with respect and they answer to its call. However later on in the book, when Jack breaks up an assembly the conch starts becoming
less important, 'If I blow the conch and they don't come back; then we've had it.' Ralph doubts that the boys will return to him and the conch, he also
knows that if the conch becomes unimportant everything will fall apart. This is because the just as democracy holds our society together today, the
conch holds the boys society together. Golding shows their society falling apart bit by bit; first Jack

Developing Competitive Advantage Advantages And Disadvantages
F. Developing Competitive Advantages (refer to Exhibit 4.7) As previously stated, it is difficult to pinpoint a competitive advantage due to of the hyper
competitive environment. Our strengths of the program are matched or exceeded by competitors. The areas we could potentially capitalize on are our
academic rigor, our passionate staff in Southeast Online and the nursing department who provide excellent customer service, and the prevalence of
nursing courses being taught by tenure track faculty. However, we aren't the only program that has passionate staff, that teaches using tenured faculty,
and are academically rigorous. The only way to provide leverage is if we are able to be the best in one of these area's compared to our top regional
competitors due to of the preference to attend within 100 miles from home. With all of our weaknesses and strengths identified, and considering that our
students ranked helpfulness of staff higher than quality of the program, customer intimacy is our best chance of differentiating ourselves. There are
multiple weaknesses that can be converted into strengths, however the ability to do that will take a substantial amount of time due to the culture. For
example, time from application to enrollment. When a student applies to the university, we can't accept them until we have received all of their
transcripts. Students are admitted and sent a notification to wait until the Registrar's Office completes their transcript review before

Comparing Danny And Reuven In Chaim Potok's The Chosen
"Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live, Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God" (NLT, Ruth 1:16). So said
Ruth to her mother–in–law Naomi in one of the most famous acts of friendship in the Bible. Two women from vastly different religious and cultural
backgrounds somehow formed a relationship that would not break, despite its hardships. The same thing happened to two boys, Reuven and Danny, in
Chaim Potok's novel, The Chosen. Through an accident in a heated softball game, Reuven realizes that Danny is lonely, and with the encouragement of
his father, befriends him.. Reuven's committed, attentive and challenging personality brings him close to Danny as both of them grow older.

during this time was the pressure of conceiving out of wedlock. Early family formation during the colonial times was considered normal for Americans
due to the ease of access on resources and land. In the United States, teenage pregnancy developed into a social problem through the progression of
women's roles in society and lack of contraceptives which resulted to American citizens having to pay higher tax dollars in order for the government to
financially support teen pregnancy and prevention programs.
The first change that led society to identify teen pregnancy as a problem were the responsibilities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the responsibilities that women took on during the colonial times presented many as a housewife to independent working women during
World War II. Because of the change, women prioritized their financial needs over starting a family, leading the decline of family formation at an early
age. Nonetheless, when men came back from war, the United States underwent a baby booming era from 1946 to 1964, so women, including teenage
girls started families. Starting from the 1970s, America's employment rate increased causing many older women to stop forming families and work.
Teenage girls, however, did not. Instead, the numbers for teen pregnancies skyrocketed to about 750,000. Through this came a second change that
caused teenage childbearing to become an issue: Congress enacted Title X and welfare programs to help teen mothers, taxing taxpayers of America
about 9.4 billion dollars yearly. The third change is the increasing amount of awareness and contraceptives provided to teenagers ever since the outburst
in the 1960s. This is due to the prevention programs and reproductive health care facilities, causing teen pregnancies to decrease starting from the
1990s. The health clinics like Planned Parenthood offered teens subsidized contraceptive which is something that failed to occur in the 1960s because

The Davis Trial-Accused of Murder by Abortion Essay example
The Queen vs. Davis case concerns the murder trial of Arthur Paul Davis and Alice Davis that occurred in 1875. In it, they were tried and convicted of
murder for conducting an abortion; the killing of a fetus and subsequently causing death of the victims, Catherine Laing and Jane Vaughn Gilmour. This
essay will examine the historical context of the case, what the trial reveals about the nature of women's lives in Toronto during the 1870s as subordinate
women who are deemed as caretakers and how women managed to end unwanted pregnancies. During the late 19th century ending an unwanted
pregnancy was an illegal offence because it was considered unethical to kill a fetus. Women were not able to access safer alternatives such as ... Show

After her death George Laing's suspicions led him to believe that she did not die of Typhoid fever as the man who buried her stated. Dr. Davis had hired
Jacob Amour to build a coffin the size big enough to fit a body, and told him that it was case of Typhoid and presented him with the death certificate.
She was put in a coffin and taken out of Toronto to Hamilton. Dr. Davis received the certificate of death from Dr. Isaac Ryall by stating that it was the
case of typhoid. No one knew at the time that Catherine was pregnant or that she was had a family of her own. Suspicions grew about the cause of death
as the body did not seem like a case of typhoid when examined; instead seemed like an induced abortion by means of violence. It was clearly noted
during the investigation and newspaper reports by the Globe and Mail that Dr. Davis was not a licensed doctor. Investigations took place because
witnesses saw a box on the side of the ditch and later discovered that it had a body of a young woman. Constables were informed and coroners began an
inquest. The next body discovered along a ditch was of Jane Vaughn Gilmour. Gilmour was a single woman who had emigrated from Scotland with her
family, and was living in Canada for 3 years. She lived with a middle–class family, the Clements and worked as their servant. It was suspected that she
was seduced and impregnated

Analysis: Department Of Defense Workforce Analysis
No major organizational changes to the Department of Defense will have to be made in order to fulfill the President's memorandum. Although there will
not be major changes, there will be interdepartmental streamlining in order to eliminate redundant positions and programs. The current structure of the
DoD continues to operate the way that it should, and although the president and strategy may have changed the DoD will continue to operate with the
current structure. The Department will also continue to contract numerous agencies and contractors to complete specific functions of the DoD.
Workforce Development: Developing a skilled and reliable workforce is a very important task for the Department of Defense. In order to maintain or

The course of action eliminates any potential setbacks that may have occurred due to budget cuts. This COA also follows President Trumps wish to
continue with growing our military and increase defense spending considering it is a $2.4 billion increase from last fiscal year. Disadvantages: The
Department of Defense will fail to fulfill the presidential memorandum and continue to use the current amount of funds. Programs and positions that are
redundant or unneeded will continue spending government funds that would otherwise not be spent. Alternative Two: Branch Cuts Scope: Implement a
15% cut to each branch of the military. This will be an aggressive yet necessary cut in order to meet the requirements of our presidential memorandum.
The cuts include: reduce Army budget from $148 billion to $125.8 billion, reduce Navy budget from $164.9 billion to $140.165 billion, reduce Air
Force budget from $166.9 billion to $141.865 billion, and reduce the defense–wide budget from $102.9 billion to $87.465 billion. This will result in the
$87.404 billion cut needed to achieve our budget goals. Cost: By evoking these measures, the Department of Defense will save 87.404 billion dollars
which is slightly more than the necessary 87.4 billion in cuts that the presidential memorandum calls for.

Using a novel in the literacy classroom; Surfing Mr Petrovic explores themes

  • 1. Using a novel in the literacy classroom; Surfing Mr Petrovic It begins with the dramatic line "Everybody hates me." The author then proceeds to take us on a journey written in the first person from the point–of– view of Tao Symonds, the eleven year old narrator and central character, as he reflects on the previous few months of his life. Tao thinks the whole world is against him. He is suffering pressure from school, his parents and their new partners, as well as from his peers to join in theirescapades and to top it all off, his dog has died. Tao feels confused and angry because his parents, middle aged surfer father, Greg, and his mother, a teacher called Christine, are in the process of a break–up. Tao then lists his troubles and tells the reader of his present dread as he is taken by his mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is unlikely that a teacher can inspire or encourage children to read if the teacher cannot display genuine enthusiasm for the text they are promoting (Elements of an English Program: Sharing Texts, 2007). Preceding the sharing of the text with students an explanation would occur as to why this particular text was being introduced. It would be stated that the text will be read primarily for enjoyment but also to use the opportunity to explore the themes, structure and features of different text genres. The title, cover and blurb would be used to encourage students to make predictions about the text and what it might be about (see appendix 1). The approach to the reading of the novel would be varied. It is anticipated that the class study would begin with a shared reading of the opening chapter to foster students' interest. A prepared reading by the teacher is usually much more involving than a hesitant reading–around–the–class activity (Sykes, n.d.). The aim is to motivate each student to read the ... • 2. The Perfect Escape Ever since the creation of Alcatraz, it was made apparent that it would be the best prison ever constructed due to its location and the way it was built. Many people attempted to escape the so–called inescapable prison, but only few people's efforts came to fruition. John and Clarence Anglin, Frank Morris, and Allen West carefully planned and executed the perfect escape. To this day, this escape is considered a mystery. The origin of Alcatraz dates back to 1775 when an explorer named Juan Manuel de Ayala discovered the island and named it Alcatraces. The name was later shortened to Alcatraz. This island is located off the San Francisco Bay, and during the California Gold Rush the government set aside the island for a possible military ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This attempt occurred during a bad storm and the Bay 's currents were especially fast and strong – most people believe Roe and Cole were swept out to sea. Officially, they are listed missing and presumed dead (Alcatraz Escape Attempts). Needless to say, escape from this island was near impossible. Although escape seemed impossible, many people still attempted it. John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, Frank Morris, and Allen West are the four people behind the famous escape of Alcatraz. Frank Lee Morris is often thought of as the mastermind behind the escape. Frank Morris was registered as prisoner #AZ1441. Morris was taken to Alcatraz in January of 1960. He was very well acquainted with prisons. As a young child, he was an orphan and was passed around to different households. His criminal record began at the young age of thirteen. He was in and out of prison from charges of theft to breaking and entering. Often times he would be back in jail less than a year after getting out. Before going to Alcatraz he had already successfully escaped many prisons. Upon arrival, Morris began plotting how to escape. Morris was said to, "have an I.Q. of 133, borderline genius, and was the mastermind of the escape plot" (Frank Morris: Only Alcatraz Escapee was from D.C.). John Anglin's number was #AZ1476, Clarence Anglin's number was #AZ1485, and Allen West's was #AZ1335 (Frank Morris: Only Alcatraz Escapee was from D.C.). Naomi had her face positioned directly in front of the mirror, her hand remaining steady and fluid as she swept her black eyeliner across her eyelid. They had class in ten minutes, but Naomi apparently ignored that fact. Carter knew her roommate spent a solid hour in front of the small mirror already; the girl curled her blonde hair in rippling waves and took her time on applying her contour and highlight despite it being so early in the morning and their destination being a small poetry class. Naomi was pretty though. That was her thing. Her trademark. Her smile was blinding, her hair was bouncy and soft, and her body possessed the grace that you only got from the combination of years of dedicated dancing and natural talent. She didn't just apply a pink lip and some shimmery highlight to her cheekbones though. She was naturally a force of beauty. Thalidomide was marketed to help with all kinds of symptoms from the flu to morning sickness to something as simple as helping you sleep. It was considered a medical panacea. The drug had many key selling points. Not only could Thalidomide help with many symptoms, it was also marketed as safe for everyone including pregnant women. • 5. The Theory Of The Birth Territory Theory Essay The theory I selected to apply to the above situation is the Birth Territory theory. This theory was created from empirical data collected by the authors who serve as both midwives and researchers. It has a critical post–structural feminist undertone and elaborates on the ideas of Michel Foucault. The Birth Territory theory predicts and elaborates on the relationships between jurisdiction (use of authority and influence), terrain (the birthing environment), and personal emotional and physiological experience by the mother. This nurse–midwifery theory was chosen because both of the major concepts directly correlate with the incident and are critical aspects of labor and delivery situations. MAYBE ELABORATE A diagram of the Birth Territory theory can be seen in Appendix A. Key concepts included in this theory are terrain and jurisdiction. Sub–concepts listed under terrain include ' 'surveillance room' and sanctum'. Sub–concepts listed under jurisdiction include 'midwifery guardianship', 'integrative power', 'midwifery domination', and 'disintegrative power'. 'Terrain' signifies the aspects of the birth environment. These include physical and geographical features such as the birthing furniture, as labor and birthing accessories, and personal support systems (birthing partner). 'Terrain' includes two sub–concepts: 'sanctum' and 'surveillance room'. A 'sanctum' is a homely birthing environment optimally designed to promote a private, healthy labor and birth. • 8. Emily By William Faulkner : A Symbol Of A Decaying Soul For the duration of her time alone, Emily began to lose her mind and her self. The isolation began to take over her life and her appearances began to degenerate. " Thus she passed from generation to generation–dear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil, and perverse." Similar to her avoidance and neglect of her father's death she avoided herself physically surrendering to the arms of death. However, she soon realized she could not escape death. Her hair was growing gray and her surrounding were disappearing. Faulkner describes Emily's hair growing "grayer and grayer until it attained an even pepper–salt iron–gray, when it ceased turning." Gray is interpreted as a symbol of a decaying soul. Every time death approaches Emily, she loses a part of herself. Soon after her father died her hair began to grow gray. When Homer dies, her grayish hair is intensified. Faulkner attempts to demonstrate Emily's physical appearance as isolation takes over her deteriorating soul. Faulkner mentions "Up until the day of her death at seventy–four it was still that vigorous iron–gray (hair), like the hair of an active man." Faulkner attempted to portray the idea that although she was alive with the capacity to live a longer life, the essence of solitude has turned that opportunity gray. Faulkner acknowledges the similarities between Emily's gray soul and her surroundings. The author describes her house as a "stubborn and coquettish decay." Media coverage of Africa has exponentially increased in recent times, but the information is rarely completely accurate and objective. Initiatives to fund global health projects has resulted in the creation of genius advertising campaigns that appeal to the emotions and humanity of privileged citizens in first world countries. This campaign has also led to grave misconceptions about the true nature of the culture and lifestyle that Africans live. The first misconception being that every person on the whole continent has the same religious beliefs, socioeconomic status, and environmental surroundings. A satirical article named "How to Write about Africa" draws attention to the exaggerated usage of the wild landscape, naked mothers, starving children, and white heroes who come in and save all of the dying babies in Africa (Wainaina, 1992). Anthropologists refer to this idea of portraying Africa in a certain light in media to elicit a desired public reaction as a "single story." A majority of media articles in general only present a single story to appeal to their target audience, but articles about Africa in particular are notorious for painting the picture of a poverty stricken continent that needs to be saved and few people have enough knowledge about Africa to contest the media they see everyday. Does it only take a little bit of make up or maybe a nicer dress shirt? Or does it require missing a few meals a day or purging what had been eaten previously? Society is growing fonder of the idea that a perfect woman or man is skinny, most of the time skinnier than what is considered healthy. For example, when choosing between a skinny and a larger woman for an ad about "the perfect body", people watching the commercial could not accept the larger woman as a suitable candidate. They cannot afford a stylist and makeup artist to prepare them for the day and touch them up as they go, nor do they need one to (Sales, 1 Jan 2010). Even with such help, a model's day is not done without their photographs being airbrushed by computer artists. Sometimes the models' body shapes are changed (Kowalski, 1 Mar. 2003). • 14. The Crisis Of Identity By William Faulkner The Crisis of Identity Arguably one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, William Faulkner was plagued with a crisis of identity from a young age. Inadequate in nearly every aspect of his life, Faulkner projected his personal shortcomings onto many of his characters, such as with Miss Emily Grierson in "A Rose for Emily" and Wash Jones in "Wash." However, instead of victimizing these characters within his works, Faulkner chooses to rely almost exclusively on the lowborn or outcasts, such as Wash and Miss Emily, as examples of heroism. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This isolation prevented Miss Emily from marrying at a suitable age, therefore leaving her ineligible after her father's death. In "Wash," Faulkner depicts Wash Jones as being the very bottom of society, an image that is strengthened by the foil of Thomas Sutpen. Unlike Sutpen, a self–made man who has risen to the top of society, Wash Jones is the lowest of the low. Wash's exceptionally degraded status at the bottom of the social heap makes it so that even a Negro woman can block his entrance to Sutpen 's kitchen: "Stop right dar, white man. Stop right whar you is. You ain't never crossed dese steps whilst Cunnel (Sutpen) here, and you ain't ghy' do hit now" (131). Wash Jones's monumental identity issues are further exemplified through his cowardliness. However, "this was a lie, as most of them... to whom he told it, knew, though there were some who believed that [Wash] really believed it, though even these believed that he had better sense than to put it to the test with Mrs. Sutpen or the Sutpen slaves" (130). While Latin American countries share cultural elements such as, language, religion, and a colonial history, each society has developed differently in terms of political, economic, and social organization. One major difference across Latin America is individual nations relationships with family planning and abortion systems. Each country 's stance on the morality of abortion, contraception, reproduction, and sexuality, differs from its neighbors and the region at large. In some cases the difference is visible within national borders, such as in Mexico, where abortion is only legal inside the capital city (Fondo Maria). In other cases the countries themselves are homogenous in law, but differ greatly from the legal positions of their neighbors. Due to such variation it is impossible to claim that Latin America as a whole aligns with one attitude concerning family planning and abortion. Additionally, both systems are simultaneously present in countries creating a complex and intriguing system of reproductive health. Due to this variety, this paper focuses on Chile and Cuba as examples of two opposing extremes. In Cuba abortion is legal under all circumstances as compared to Chile, where abortion was historically criminalized. • 16. Emotionality In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner "A Rose for Emily" is a short story in which William Faulkner, the author uses manipulation of time and the perspective of the townspeople to present the life of a seemingly psychotic titular character, Emily Grierson. Emily, throughout her life, faces the hardships of loneliness and disconnection in life through the deaths of her loved ones and the coming of a transforming society. When Emily's father dies, she loses the only person that was ever associated with her, until she finally finds love for the first time in Homer Barron. However, Emily is crushed when she realizes Homer is not looking to get together and kills him to preserve the only person she found love in. Although Emily might be considered evil and psychopathic on the basis of her actions alone, knowing her father's aggression, her loneliness, and the townspeople's responsiveness towards her can lead one to react more sympathetically towards Emily. To contextualize Emily's behavior, as a young lady, she was held back and restricted from engaging in many activities and was symbolically shown to be in an abusive household. Through the townspeople's description of the titular character and her father, it is evident that Emily grew up with a father who was very aggressive and completely unlike her, which forms the reader to feel sympathetically towards her, because she had never experienced the love from a family anyone needs to grow and mature. The Townspeople "long thought of them as a tableau" (Faulkner 3), or a spectacle, and saw Emily as an innocent person hindered in the family. Emily is also detailed as a "slender figure in white" (Faulkner 3), which expresses her purity compared to her father who was a "silhouette" (Faulkner 3), or a dark figure visible dominantly over the light figure of Emily. The abusiveness and dominance of Mr. Grierson is shown as he has "his back to her and clutching a horsewhip" (Faulkner 3). Emily was fairly different from most southern belle women at the time, as she was single until age 30 mainly because of "all the young men her father had driven away" (Faulkner 3). As a human being, deaths are some of the most, if not the most, damaging to one's mental state, and it's clear to feel sympathetic towards Emily and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With the relaxing attitude towards sexuality and the introduction of birth control, casual sex between adults was becoming very popular. The development of the birth control pill is often suggested as a cause of the Sexual Revolution. The creation of birth control actually came from President Lyndon B. Johnson's social reform policy called "The Great Society", which was mainly set to eliminate poverty and racial injustice. The FDA licensed "The Pill" in 1960 as a means to eliminate poverty cause by overpopulation. (Bailey, p. 828) The pill was extremely popular and had over 1 million users by the year 1962. With the wide adoption of birth control, women now became free to express their sexuality without the worry of unplanned pregnancy. • 21. The Great Alcatraz Escape, 1962 One evening on the Twelfth of July, 1962, three men escaped the 'so–called' inescapable, maximum security prison that we know as Alcatraz. There are many speculations related to whether they made it out alive or not. Either way, Frank Lee Morris, Clarence Anglin, and John Anglin accomplished an amazing feat by making history with the most well thought out plan. There is a lot of evidence that proves, without a doubt, that these men made it out alive, and that they did. Alcatraz is located in the middle of the San Francisco bay. It officially became a prison in 1934 and was built to house and contain the most notorious criminals of that time. There were 14 escape attempts total involving 36 different prisoners. However, this one was by far the most publicized and successful one. Frank Lee Morris was in Alcatraz for "Crimes ranging from narcotics possession to armed robbery." The Anglin brothers were also both serving time for bank robbery according to alcatrazhistory.com. The escape originally started as a four man job. The other man, Allen West, in for car theft. He was greatly disliked amongst all prisoners and guards alike. It was his dream and goal to escape. Allen West supplied makeshift knives and all four of them slowly chipped away the concrete around their air vents. West's hole was made too big and was too noticeable so it had to be covered up with new cement. Meanwhile they started to collect rain jackets that would later be used to create a raft and life ... • 22. Birth Control Movement : Margaret Sanger The birth control movement was created in early 20th century by Progressive and Socialist reformers like Margaret Sanger. She and other birth control activists would fight for women's access to birth control through the 20th century which has gone on to affect American women today. In order to analyze the affect that birth control has had on America, it is necessary to look at the works of Margaret Sanger and the birth control movement of the progressive era. A good primary source with information that assesses the birth control movement is the collection of anonymous letters sent to Margaret Sanger entitled Motherhood in Bondage, published in 1928. A secondary source used is the book Margaret Sanger And the Birth Control Movement In America, written by Ellen Chesler in 1992. Lastly, a tertiary source is the PBS website, http://www.pbs.org/wg1}bh/amex/pill/timeline/ that discusses the timeline of birth control in America. If it were not for the progressive thinking and radical changes promoted by the socialist party, birth control would have never been able to make its mark on American history First to promote the Birth Control movement was radical political activist, Margaret Sanger. At nineteen years old, Margaret watched her mother of only fifty years old die from tuberculosis. Out of anger she immediately blamed her father for putting the strain of eleven childbirths and seven miscarriages on her mother (PBS). This would begin her career for helping women. Sanger ... The common theme of all the media articles I reviewed is the recognition of people as an asset by the organisations to achieve their strategic goals and objectives. It is observed that organisations are directing their efforts to recruit, retain and develop this asset. On reviewing the media articles, I have summarised the current HR issues in the following topics. • Employee retention: A Link with the Bottom Line • Aging workforce: A determinant in HRP • Training & Development: A powerful HRD strategy * The media articles are not attached however the ""REFERECES" section contains complete references for each article. ... Although compensation based strategies play a role in retention, there's more to keeping employees these days than offering cash incentives. Companies are also realising the importance of organisational fit in retaining employees. Ochstein (2007) reports through "The Tribune Business Weekly" that Daman Products, USA increased its employee retention rate since the company changed its hiring tactics to hire people with soft skills (ability to communicate effectively, working in a team, display strong work ethic etc. ) and then train them for the technical skills. He indicates that when the company first started, 34% of employees left within 2 years, this percentage is now down to 17. Summary of Key Findings Workforce turnover is a complex and important issue amongst today's organisations. It is perhaps one of the most often cited cause of increased cost and decreased productivity. No wonder people management has become an important frontier to extract and create more value from company assets. • 27. Essay on “a Rose for Emily” Literary Analysis Cameron Barba Ms. Carunchio English 11B 12 February 2009 "A Rose for Emily" Literary Analysis In "A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner uses setting, character development, and stylistic devices to express the mystery of Emily and the somewhat gossip–obsessed attitude the townspeople have towards Emily. Faulkner uses the setting to convey the mystery surrounding Emily and her actions. For example, Faulkner writes " knocked at the door through which no visitor had passed since she ceased giving china–painting lessons eight or ten years earlier." This quote shows the mystery of her house and how nobody knows what is in it or what goes on inside of it. The townspeople are wondering what goes on behind Miss Emily's closed doors. Also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The townspeople are very interested in everything about her it seems and this is just another topic they gossip about. Another example of Miss Emily's character change and how it relates to the mystery surrounding her is at first she starts going out "on Sunday afternoons driving in the yellow–wheeled buggy and the matched team of bays from the livery table." Then, later on, she wants poison for some odd reason and says "I want arsenic, The druggist looked down at her. She looked back at him, erect, her face like a strained flag.... What you are going to use it for. Miss Emily just stared at him." (pg.651) Miss Emily is performing many strange actions that spark the interest of the townspeople. The inhabitants of the town try to give any explanation for the mystery of why she's buying the poison, such as she is going to commit suicide. Her actions are just encouraging the townspeople to gossip about the mystery. Faulkner utilizes stylistic devices such as imagery, and figurative language to express the townspeople and their feeling towards Emily. For example, the author describes Miss Emily in great detail such as "her eyes, lost in the fatty ridges of her face, looked like two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough as the moved from one face to another while the visitors stated their ... However by now the reader is not so sure. The boys meet at the call of the 'conch' which Ralph fishes out of the lagoon at the beginning of the book. In heralding the meetings the conch becomes a symbol of democracy, which is later to be broken. However later on in the book, when Jack breaks up an assembly the conch starts becoming less important, 'If I blow the conch and they don't come back; then we've had it.' Ralph doubts that the boys will return to him and the conch, he also knows that if the conch becomes unimportant everything will fall apart. Developing Competitive Advantages (refer to Exhibit 4.7) As previously stated, it is difficult to pinpoint a competitive advantage due to of the hyper competitive environment. Our strengths of the program are matched or exceeded by competitors. The areas we could potentially capitalize on are our academic rigor, our passionate staff in Southeast Online and the nursing department who provide excellent customer service, and the prevalence of nursing courses being taught by tenure track faculty. However, we aren't the only program that has passionate staff, that teaches using tenured faculty, and are academically rigorous. The only way to provide leverage is if we are able to be the best in one of these area's compared to our top regional competitors due to of the preference to attend within 100 miles from home. With all of our weaknesses and strengths identified, and considering that our students ranked helpfulness of staff higher than quality of the program, customer intimacy is our best chance of differentiating ourselves. There are multiple weaknesses that can be converted into strengths, however the ability to do that will take a substantial amount of time due to the culture. Instead, the only issue during this time was the pressure of conceiving out of wedlock. Early family formation during the colonial times was considered normal for Americans due to the ease of access on resources and land. In the United States, teenage pregnancy developed into a social problem through the progression of women's roles in society and lack of contraceptives which resulted to American citizens having to pay higher tax dollars in order for the government to financially support teen pregnancy and prevention programs. Therefore, the responsibilities that women took on during the colonial times presented many as a housewife to independent working women during World War II. Because of the change, women prioritized their financial needs over starting a family, leading the decline of family formation at an early age. Nonetheless, when men came back from war, the United States underwent a baby booming era from 1946 to 1964, so women, including teenage girls started families. Starting from the 1970s, America's employment rate increased causing many older women to stop forming families and work. Teenage girls, however, did not. Instead, the numbers for teen pregnancies skyrocketed to about 750,000. Through this came a second change that caused teenage childbearing to become an issue: Congress enacted Title X and welfare programs to help teen mothers, taxing taxpayers of America about 9.4 billion dollars yearly. The third change is the increasing amount of awareness and contraceptives provided to teenagers ever since the outburst in the 1960s. This will result in the $87.404 billion cut needed to achieve our budget goals. Cost: By evoking these measures, the Department of Defense will save 87.404 billion dollars which is slightly more than the necessary 87.4 billion in cuts that the presidential memorandum calls for. ...
