Hotel Ballymun Ballymun, Dublin 2007 http://www.hotelballymun.com/ Guests at Hotel Ballymun were able to appreciate the spectacular views over Dublin, just weeks before these views ceased to exist. In addition to the nine individually designed, single and double bedrooms there was a garden room, a tv lounge, communal kitchen, reception area, breakfast and seating area, as well as an intimate conference and events centre. The rooms were furnished with one-off pieces, customised and remodelled from existing furniture, which were designed and made by people from the Ballymun area, during a two month series of workshops with Irish design duo Sticks and recent RCA graduate Jonathan Legge. A diverse programme of cultural and social events took place in the Hotel. Talks, live art and music performances took place at the Hotel throughout the day and in the evenings. There was also a chance for the general public to take the lift up to view Hotel Ballymun. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Irish Landmark Trust, Ireland http://irishlandmark.com/ The Irish Landmark Trust Ltd. was founded in 1992 with a remit to save interesting and unusual 'landmark' properties throughout the whole of Ireland and to re-use them, once restored, as good quality self catering holiday accommodation. At its heart is the principle that the structure iself is of prime importance and any interventions must respect this. Their buildings are varied, from lighthouses, to gatelodges, to tower houses, to school houses, to mews, which - because of their individuality, even eccentricity - are unsuitable as permanent residences. But often in remote and delightful parts of the country, they are ideal retreats for those seeking a short stay in fascinating and sensitively restored buildings. Further, they see themselves as problem solvers. Owners, private and public, with responsibility for important buildings are faced with the dual task of restoring and finding sustainable uses for them. By taking a building on lease we are enabled to restore it, and can sustain it on short-term lettings until the expiry of the lease (typically, 50 years) when the fully restored building reverts to the owner. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Guilt Forgiveness, Worldwide N/A Egs... Carbon Offset Websites Catholic Church Indulgences 'Guilt-forgiveness' programmes are often very good at making money, but usually do no solve the underlying problem. The organisers often cite the excuse that the revenue generated will help others. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Green Graveyard Co., Ireland / Worldwide N/A http://www.greencoffinsireland.com/natural-burial.html People sometimes talk about where they would like their final resting place to be. Often they describe a green place with trees, flowers and wildlife in abundance. They describe a beautiful and unspoiled place where their family and friends can visit and be at peace. Conventional Irish Graveyards fall a long way short of these wishes. Gone are the marble headstones and concrete surrounds that are common place in Irish graveyards, replaced instead by a small grave marker and the planting of a native Irish tree. Visitors walk along pathways surrounded by native Irish trees and flowers, spotting wildlife in their newly created habitats. These natural burial grounds are sacred and natural places where people of all faiths and those without any religion will find a beautiful final resting place. Allowing your funeral to be used as a conservation tool will leave a legacy of care and respect for our planet. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
The WIR Bank, Switzerland, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIR_Bank The WIR bank is a not for profit bank. It serves the interest of the clients, not the bank itself. It is a very stable system, not prone to failure as the current banking system is. It remains fully operational even in times of general economic crisis. WIR may have contributed to the remarkable stability of the Swiss economy, as it dampens downturns in the business cycle. One of the remarkable things about it is that it issues its own currency which becomes popular when the Swiss Franc is doing badly, and vice-versa. In that way it avoids the economic peaks and troughs that Ireland has experienced in the past decade. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Anti-squatting, Amsterdam N/A It's legal in Amsterdam to squat. Squatting isn't particularly interesting and can often be negative. However it induces 'anti-squatting' whereby the owner of the property let's someone or a group use the space in order to prevent squatting. In return they keep the street alive (no vacant properties), and often are required (as one of their conditions) to actually give something back to the street as the landlord wants the area to get/keep a good name. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

The children, aged six to 11, spent a week visiting parks and playgrounds and wanted something completely different. Hills were mentioned, and tunnels, as well as a more traditional sandpit. Some also wanted a hiding place until a six-year-old girl pointed out that “you can’t do that because everyone would know where it is”. “ How do you make hills out of wood?” he asked, scratching his head. But they did, and the kids helped to assemble it all last Saturday – much to the annoyance of a small number of neighbours who didn’t approve. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
TASC Ireland n/a http://www.tascnet.ie/ TASC is an independent think-tank dedicated to combating Ireland’s high level of economic inequality and ensuring that public policy has equality at its core. Economic inequality is not confined to income inequality, but exists across many areas of the economy - for example, asset ownership, wealth, taxation, health, housing and education. Thus, fighting economic inequality is about ensuring that economic interests are rendered subordinate to the common good in areas such as education, health and welfare. It is also about redistributing risk, wealth and power. This, in turn, requires increased accountability and transparency at all levels. The primary focus of TASC’s current work is to identify solutions to the present economic crisis aimed at achieving recovery with equality. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Photoreactive Sun Canopy, Milan, Italy (Concept) http://ideasandgadgets.blogspot.com/2008/04/photoreactive-sun-canopy-fusion-of.html Visitors to this year’s Salone del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair 2008)were in for a treat when they walked into a quaint Italian courtyard on Milan’s Via Borgospesso to witness Christoph Klemmt’s stunning vortex-shaped OR installation. Composed out of polygonal, polypropylene, photoreactive segments which respond to ultra-violet light, OR’s captivating powers lie in its capacity to adapt its appearance to changes in weather and daylight. Its "skin" emits flourishing hues of blue and green when exposed to sunlight and maintains a subtle translucent white when the installation is overcome by shade. Best of all, OR’s effects are not limited to daytime - at night, it generates ample atmosphere by becoming a "psychedelic chandelier" flooding its surrounding areas with a dramatic disco of lights. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Transport Map Dublin http://www.venetikidis.com/aris/start Dublin’s lack of comprehensive and integrated public transport map has been a major obstacle. The entry point for people new to the network for using Dublin Bus in particular is very high. It demands existing geographic knowledge of the city and putting up with a confusing layout of bus connections. A city centre public transport map has been missing for years. In collaboration with other academic researchers of sustainable public transport alternatives for Dublin, a network of Bus Rapid Transit connections was developed. These routes are distributed throughout the city. Furthermore, these measures allowed for simplifications and cost effective upgrades to the network. As part of my MA I created a set of new public transport maps that match international high standards. A city centre public transport map with this level of clarity and detail has never existed in Dublin. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Since then, the idea has become an annual event, with participants in six continents. Last year's celebration included 700 parks in 21 countries. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Urban Orchard, London http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/07/urban-orchard-appears-london.php The Union Street Urban Orchard is just that: an orchard of 85 fruit trees and more, created on an abandoned site in the east end of London. It's a community project, with volunteers helping to build and plant. Part of the London Festival of Architecture, it's a wonderful example of bringing urban spaces alive and bringing back nature to the inner city. The garden will also house a greenhouse, a living wall, a tire garden, and a railway arch turned into a cinema. It's completely organic in that everything is donated or found and the design works itself from there. A plant adoption and exchange programme is being planned for one weekend. Donate one and pick one up. The Guerrilla Gardener is coming to give a workshop and there will be a cinema in the railway arches. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Recycling Bicycles Dublin Ongoing www.rothar.ie Rothar was created in May 2008. The idea came up in the beginning of 2008, surprised by the amount of bicycles abandoned and damaged in Dublin streets. We also experienced the lack of cheap and quality second hand bicycles available in Dublin, and the costs of repairs that go along with owning a bicycle, making cycling difficult for people with limited financial resources. Secondly, we have been working in community development projects as a volunteer and in a paid capacity for many years, and we could witness how people we were working with were isolated but had a great potential once they were given opportunities. we decided then to combine our environmental awareness with the social inclusion via a medium – the bicycle – that appears to us like being a very promising transportation solution to our congested city. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Shared Space, Worldwide, N/A http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_space Shared space is an urban design concept aimed at integrated use of public spaces. It encourages traffic engineers, urban planners and experts from other fields to consult with users of public space when planning and designing streets and squares in both built and non-built environments. The concept shares some characteristics with Living streets. Shared space removes the traditional segregation of motor vehicles, pedestrians and other road users. Conventional road priority management systems and devices such as kerbs, lines, signs and signals are replaced with an integrated, people-oriented understanding of public space, such that walking, cycling, shopping and driving cars become integrated activities. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Plebicites, Switzerland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referendum#Switzerland In Switzerland, there are binding referendums at federal, cantonal and municipal level. They are a central feature of Swiss political life. It is not the government's choice whether or when a referendum is held, but it is a legal procedure regulated by the Swiss constitution. There are two types and the referendums are said, by their adversaries, to slow politics down. On the other hand, empirical scientists, e.g. Bruno S. Frey among many, show that this and other instruments of citizens' participation, direct democracy, contribute to stability and happiness. The votes on referendums are always held on a Sunday, typically three or four times a year, and in most cases, the votes concern several referendums at the same time, often at different political levels (federal, cantonal, municipal). 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Spiral Dynamics www.spiraldynamics.org This framework is based in the original research and theory of developmental scholar Dr. Clare W. Graves. It explores what makes us different and alike at levels deeper than the demographics of age or gender, economics or ethnicities. With these insights, it is possible to build education, business, and governance systems which fit who people are better, and to help diverse people to find contexts of best fit. In addition, it offers a trajectory for change, both progressive and regressive in our search for congruence and fit 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Glassphemy San Francisco, U.S. 2010 http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/06/glassphemy-project-lets-you-pitch-glass-bottles-at-friends-and-not-get-arrested.php The release of pent up energy is part of what's behind the Glassphemy project by Macro Sea, which lets you send your anger, frustration, or giddiness off into the air along with the glass bottle you pitch full force into the "recycling bin." "This whole recycling and green thing has gotten so damn boring in recent years that we felt we had to do something. GLASSPHEMY! celebrates the illicit thrill of breaking bottles while working through deeply rooted emotional issues (and sort of saving the planet a little)." To me it is signnificant that it takes place in San Francisco – a City which tends to understand the 'nature' of people and their drives. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

  • 28. LPs and Apples, Amsterdam A music shop in Amsterdam sells LPs inside and apples outside. He makes his profit from the apples, but loves the LPs.

In contrast, ULTra offers personal transport with no waiting, and takes passengers non-stop to their chosen destination. 17/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

All over the world, citizens, artists and activists are taking part in PARK(ing) Day: taking over metered spaces and transforming them into parks for everyone to enjoy. It all started in 2005, when San Francisco art and design studio Rebar turned a metered space into a public park for two hours.
