1. Symptoms & Solutions Of Lyme Disease In Dogs
As everyone who reads this blog knows, I have Lyme disease, have had it since I was 14.
Because of wrong information about prevention and identification of both seed ticks (youngest tick
form most likely to transmit) and the MYRIAD of rashes (not just target rash) that can occur with
transmission, my mother and I thought it was a chigger and put Vaseline on it. Apparently ticks are
one of the few creatures that panic-vomit. The true prevalence of Lyme infections in dogs is
unknown, but informal surveys and anecdotal reports from veterinary clinicians practicing in hot-spot
Lyme areas indicate that between 10-60% of dogs not vaccinated for Lyme may test positive for
Borrelia burgdorferi. The clinical signs of Lyme disease are treated with antibiotics, and often the
symptoms will resolve within 3 days of therapy. It must live within either a mammal or a tick.
Dog owners who do not want to get their pet vaccinated for Lyme disease can also avoid Lyme
disease in dogs by simply being very watchful of their animals. Check the dog for ticks every single
time he comes in from the outdoors, or at least once per day. Remember, the tick must be attached
to your dog for at least one day before she will get sick. Treat suspected Lyme disease with
doxycycline (5 mg per pound of dog) which you can purchase without prescription and without
visiting a vet.
In 1986 I diagnosed and in 1988, in collaboration with Yale Medical School pathologist Paul H.
Duray, published the first case of Lyme carditis in a dog. While humans are limited to Lyme disease
awareness and tick avoidance and detection for prevention of Lyme disease in all of its forms, dogs
may be immunized with a safe and effective vaccine. Dogs and cats become infected with B.
burgdorferi when feeding ticks inoculate the organisms.
There are also many email lists and Lyme Support websites where you can learn more, including the
Empire State Lyme Disease Association. One for smaller dogs and one for larger dogs, google them.
They really do work and contain a small amount of amitraz (EPA classifies Amitraz as a Class 3 -
slighty toxic), which prevents ticks from attaching to the dog. Sadly the vets don't tell you about
these collars, which in comparison to a Lyme disease shot are relatively cheap.
