Equine Experiential Learning
ASTOP has been fortunate in securing grants to offer clients Equine Experiential
Learning. The goal is to increase their awareness of the highly instinctive nature of horses.
They learn how this instinctive nature becomes a mirror of their physical and emotional
state when they are in their presence. The lesson to be learned is that if they change
themselves, the horse responds differently. Horses are honest, which makes them
especially powerful messengers. In addition to communication skills and body awareness,
the sessions help them to recognize and understand the role of boundaries in any horse/
human relationship and how boundaries have an unspoken, energetic quality. Clients are
then able to take what they have learned throughout this day, see how it clearly reflects
what happens in their daily lives and then take small steps to make necessary changes. All
the work takes place on the ground.

Beacon House
Beacon House is a residential treatment program for women with addiction and
who are in recovery with 100% of them having experienced various forms of
trauma. Each quarter ASTOP’s Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC)
completes a series of three groups: Sexual Abuse 101, Protective Behaviors and
Healthy Relationships. There are regular referrals from Beacon to ASTOP either
prior to or following the group sessions. The facilitator of the group is trained in
both substance abuse and trauma which assists the clients in feeling safe to discuss
both issues and their connection to each other. It also helps the counselor to
understand the potential for relapse and appropriate intervention strategies.

ARC Day Treatment
ARC is an outpatient day treatment program for women with addiction. Each
quarter the CSAC does a series of groups including Sexual Abuse 101 and
Protective Behaviors. If additional subjects are requested they will be
accommodated depending on the needs of the group at that time. There are
regular referrals from ARC to ASTOP either prior to or following the group
sessions. The facilitator of the group is trained in both substance abuse and
trauma which assists the clients in feeling safe to discuss both issues and their
connection to each other. It also helps the counselor to understand the

ARC Residential
ARC is a three month transitional living facility for women leaving the criminal
justice system. Each quarter the ASTOP Prevention Educator does a three
part series of groups including Sexual Abuse 101, Media Effects, and Human
Trafficking/Prostitution. The groups are designed to provide the women with a
safe and supportive outlet to learn, discuss, and process key components of
sexual assault and the impact it has had on their lives. It also provides tools
necessary to make healthier lifestyle choices for themselves and their families.
In collaboration with the presentations, follow-up referrals with ASTOP
counselors are regularly scheduled.

Fond du Lac County Juvenile Detention
On a quarterly basis, the ASTOP Prevention Educator and Advocate provide a
three day program about Sexual Assault and related topics such as Sexual
Harassment, Healthy Relationships, Bullying, Technology Safety, Risky Behavior,
Drugs/Alcohol, and Party Safety to the incarcerated youth of Fond du Lac County.
The program is designed to build trust and provide a “safe” space where the
youth can openly discuss and process their personal experiences. Alternative
education techniques are utilized to keep the students engaged; including videos,
music videos, interactive and hands-on activities, PowerPoint’s, one-on-one and
group discussion, role-playing, scenarios, jury trials, physical activity, and pizza.
Follow-up support and referral are available, including ASTOP counseling services
offered within the detention facility.

Fond du Lac County Juvenile Intake
ASTOP collaborates extensively with youth while they are within the
criminal justice system. Every quarter ASTOP provides Sexual Assault 101
programming to the Girls Group and Boys Group of Juvenile Intake. The
Girls Group and Boys Group are for youth in transitional living who are no
longer incarcerated but need additional support during their probation. The
group discussion focuses on risky behavior, providing tools and resources
for healthier lifestyle choices. It also provides a safe outlet for the youth to
process their personal experiences and seek assistance. Referral to ASTOP
services is frequently facilitated through Juvenile Intake.

St. Agnes Hospital Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit
ASTOP staff facilitates a weekly awareness/education group on the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit
of St. Agnes Hospital. ASTOP staff also responds to requests made by psychiatrists and
psychologists to speak with individuals on the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit. Many patients
disclose a history of sexual violence. Many of the disclosures were the first time the victim had ever
told anyone what has happened to them and they were believed. There is active participation that
takes place and when discussing the consequences of sexual assault it’s like a “light bulb” moment to
the survivors. Often times they had never thought that the self-destructive behaviors they were
dealing with may have stemmed from the sexual assault that they had experienced as a child. By
facilitating the weekly group and responding to individual Inpatient Behavioral Health requests,
ASTOP has been able to provide education on sexual assault; have a discussion of myths
surrounding sexual assault; giving a survivor the forum to have a voice in telling their story;
information that it is never too late to receive help; and knowledge of ASTOP cost free services.

Blandine House
Blandine House is a residential half-way house for men recovering from addiction.
ASTOP’s Prevention Educator and Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor co-facilitate
a group to provide information on sexual abuse and Protective Behaviors. Many of
the participants are receptive to the information and ASTOP has received referrals
from those that have disclosed sexual abuse to their counselor after the
presentations. One of the ASTOP facilitators of the group is trained in both
substance abuse and trauma which assists the clients in feeling safe to discuss both
issues and their connection to each other. It also helps the counselor to
understand the potential for relapse and appropriate intervention strategies.

The Fast Track Group is a men’s domestic violence perpetrator’s group.
ASTOP’s CSAC facilitates one session to discuss sexual abuse 101 with special
attention paid to the issue of consent. Several men have disclosed their own
sexual abuse as well as gaining a better understanding of their behaviors
toward others. This is usually a very lively discussion. Prevention education
using Protective Behaviors as it would relate to their children is also discussed.

Teen Group
The teen group is for teens who are clients at ASTOP. The group meets from 4:00 to
5:30 every other Thursday. Each meeting starts with a time for the girls to share their
thoughts and feelings about whatever is happening in their life. The group is a safe place
for them to talk without judgment, or to be free to not share if they aren’t ready.
It is an open group, which means that new members can begin at any time. I am grateful
that the girls enthusiastically welcome new members. Although most girls are afraid to
attend the first time, they soon realize they are not alone in their struggles and open up
because the others understand what they are going through. The girls often bring poems
or songs they have written and want to read or sing to the group. They are also
encouraged to write their life stories and share them with the group.

Parents and Affected Family Members Group
The purpose of the group is to meet the needs of parents and affected family members by
giving them a safe place where they can talk about their concerns for the child in their life who
was sexually abused. The group offers support, compassion, and friendship to help the
participant so they in turn can meet the needs of their loved ones.
Each person’s situation is different, and in some case the child is now an adult who was
sexually abused as a child but did not disclose until an adult. Whatever the situation, each
affected family member has feelings of hurt, fear, anger, guilt, shame, and betrayal, and it is very
healing to be in the presence of others who have been in similar situations, understand their
feelings, and are here to walk the healing path with them.
The group is open, which means that though not everyone is able to attend every meeting,
they are welcome to attend when they can come.
