Professor Jessica Vanderlelie - La Trobe's Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Success - is one of Australia's most dedicated drivers of the student experience. Which makes it even more appropriate that she welcomed 'Students First 2019' delegates this year. Listening to students is a critical part of driving effective change. Jessica described La Trobe University’s initiatives to put student feedback at the centre of the university. Delegates also heard that 70% of Studiosity users felt they’ll get a higher grade, 81% of Studiosity users felt more confident, and Studiosity users were 44% more likely to stay enrolled. This year's Studiosity 'Students First' Symposium was hosted at La Trobe University City Campus, 25 and 26 July 2019.

The University of Adelaide's Beacon of Enlightenment Strategic and Operational Plans outline a number of key targets for online learning. The 2013-14 Benchmarking eLearning Projects provided a baseline of the University's performance in regard to these online learning targets and a defined set of benchmarks. This presentation will provide a background to the Benchmarking eLearning Project, the data collected and how the data is leveraged in the faculty to improve the online learning experience of students. The newly established Guidelines for Minimum use of MyUni and a targeted approach to enhancing online course design in line with the targets will be discussed. Future plans to automate reporting using an expanded source of data to inform support activities and ensure the university is improving over time will be outlined. In recent years there has been growing interest in the use of e-learning tools that are able to adapt to suit the ability levels, needs, or preferences of individual learners. In this project we aim to test the utility of an adaptive e-learning study tool within the context of a large undergraduate Psychology course (approximately 700 students). The study tool and a number of associated summative tests are hosted on the course’s Blackboard Learning Management System. Pilot data indicates that students that use the tool perform significantly better on the summative tests compared to non-users (t[683] = 4.35, p <0.001). We examine the relationship in the context of 1) learning analytics data that can be obtained via Blackboard, and 2) a number of known psychological predictors of academic success. Initial Identification When you hear the word "college," you might picture students hanging out in their dorm rooms or packing into large lecture halls for their studies. However, when more and more learning methods are made possible by technology, that representation is dated more and more. Indeed, the popularity of online and distant learning among college students has consistently grown, but does that indicate it's a good fit for you? To help you respond to that question, spend some time contrasting traditional versus online schooling. Since both traditional and online learning have benefits and drawbacks, students should be prepared before entering the classroom (or logging in). This head-to-head comparison concentrated on three crucial components that affect a student's experience. We'll also examine the advantages of "mixed learning" in more detail. The project encourages Macomb Community College to increase the number of classes it provides to students, both in the physical classrooms and online. College is a time for self-discovery, and there is no better way to figure out one's capabilities and areas of interest than by enrolling in a wide array of subjects during your time there. Macomb analyses data on student learning to pinpoint areas that could benefit from altered rules and procedures. In order to improve the college's Academic Mobility Policy, data on student success is used. This policy establishes a procedure for ensuring that students are enrolled in the proper classes. The set course prerequisites must be met by all students enrolling in English composition, mathematics, reading, and English for Academic Purposes (EAPP) courses. The college has a "mobility period" in place to make sure that students are adequately positioned for success in these foundational courses. Math and English are the subjects where mobility happens the most frequently. As a student, I have participated in a diverse range of classes, and I never stop being astonished by the extent to which the topics overlap. The Center for Teaching and Learning used the assessment results to provide additional opportunities and resources to support faculty initiatives to integrate communication-based teaching methods into their lessons. On the Macomb Community College Portal, a page titled "Using Assessment Results" was made with resources highlighting communication strategies faculty members can use. Workshops highlighting methods for assisting students in becoming successful researchers, thinkers, and writers in the disciplines were available as professional development opportunities. A book discussion on John C. Bean's book Engaging Ideas - The Professor's Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical-Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom was also provided by the Center for Teaching and Learning (2011). In 2014, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information and the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) partnered in the development of the TALint (Toronto Academic Libraries Internship) program. Focused on workplace-integrated-learning (W-I-L), the TALint program provides enhanced educational experiences for Masters of Information students by combining periods of in-class study with actual workplace experiences. The two-year program is intended to enhance the quality of student learning by providing interns with specialized knowledge and practical skills, professional development and mentorship opportunities. It is often the case that the workplace is ahead of academic programs. This is particularly true in technical services and the field of electronic resource management, where the requisite knowledge and practical skills required to perform these roles has traditionally been under-represented within library and information studies curricula. The TALint program has provided UTL with the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the expertise developed through information studies programs and the specific knowledge and skills required to take on roles as electronic resource librarians. With this year’s TALint cohort in UTL’s Metadata Technologies Team, we are using NASIG’s Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians as a framework for training our two TALint interns. In this session, presenters will discuss the development of a comprehensive student training plan in electronic resource management, the ongoing assessment of learning outcomes, student perceptions of competency-based training, and the benefits of using the Core Competencies that have been felt beyond the internship program. We will share how this training plan can better equip Masters of Information students for careers in electronic resource management by producing graduates who are qualified, technologically skilled and workplace-ready.

In addition, SEDL Insights on implementing effective professional learning communities in districts and schools. 1. Provide a clear structure and purpose for PLC meetings 2. Address the most pressing instructional challenges 3. Provide support from all levels of the school system. 4. Foster an atmosphere of trust. 5. Monitor the work of PLCs and provide constructive feedback. 6. Support teachers’ sense of efficacy and level of professionalism. Implementing Effective Professional Learning Communities “Professional learning communities,” the name given to teachers’ collaborative professional learning—or PLCs, as they are often called—has become so overused that the term’s meaning is often lost. Only when teachers reflect on their instructional practice, consider the effect instruction has on students, and implement insights gained from a meeting to improve their teaching performance, can this process be called a professional learning community. Reflecting on what has happened to Higher Education in 2020 in Australia, in responding to the pandemic, may seem a bit premature to some. But on the other hand, we need to learn these lessons quickly as there are no guarantees moving forward. Thankfully many of us have had reasonably robust technology enhanced learning environments to fall back onto. But let’s face it, this hasn’t always been elegant as it could be. So, reflecting on some of the things we have learned in 2020, it is worth distilling some thoughts as we move in to 2021, particularly around TEL and the funding environment for HE.
