•Take a careful note of everything you find, even if it does not seem relevant at the time. It could fall into
place later and it might be difficult to retrace your search.
•It is most important to remember that few pieces of information are 100% accurate. Even official
records can be inaccurate
•When you have collected all the available information it is useful to make up a family tree chart. This
will show you clearly what you need to locate from official records.
•At this stage it is important to decide which branch of your family you will research first, otherwise your
time will be occupied just collecting names.
•The next step is to search the statutory records on ScotlandsPeople website; at New Register House in
Edinburgh or at local Registrar’s offices in person. They will provide information on births, marriages
and deaths within the family back to the year 1855, and other information from even further back.
•From addresses given on the certificates you can now go on to search the census returns between
1841 and 1901, and the Old Parish Registers (c1600-1854). It is important to gather information on the
places associated with the family. This will enable you to build a more detailed picture of your family
and their place in the community.
