1. Today we continue w/Church Vision - take a look at a critical element that moves a church to ReFresh its Vision NEXT SLIDE
1. New Vision doesn’t come from a seminar or sermon - it doesn’t come from a Pastor’s Prayer Retreat - these things may help, * but they aren’t the key element 2. The key element for opening the church to ReFresh its Vision is a sense of URGENCY (click) 3. I’m not sure if that’s the key element you were expecting, so let me explain 4. NEXT SLIDE
1. Dictionary Definition: “Importance requiring immediate action” 2. A church’s Stage of Life on Life Cycle is connected to its Missional Urgency NEXT SLIDE
1. New Churches have a strong sense of Urgency about everything! * their life depends on making more disciples * they must discover or develop leaders * they must find volunteers to cover bases 2. GROWING & MATURE churches have naturally decreasing sense of Urgency - their feeling of Stability is inversely proportionate to their sense of Urgency 3. MAINTENANCE Churches have little sense of Urgency - the status quo is usually quite fine 4. As churches progress up the Life Cycle, the sense of Urgency declines - Urgency eventually gives way to Stability, Complacency & then Desperation - so it’s important to find those Urgent Moments & capitalize on them 4. ILLUS : A good EXAMPLE is the Church of Jerus. in Acts 4 - you may recall that this ch. describes a Moment of Urgency for Jerus. Ch. 5. NEXT SLIDE
Jerusalem Church 1. Remember: This first church is a PATTERN of a healthy, balanced, mobilized church (Acts 2) 2. But here in ch.4 they are faced with a Moment of Urgency - READ Slide 3. Their ldrs. are arrested and threatened - this is their Moment of Urgency (click) 4. What will the church do with this Crisis? - will they plead for God’s protection & deliverance? - will they pray for God’s judgment on the Jew. ldrs? - will they relocate to the suburbs? 5. (click) Take a look at their response to this Moment of Urgency - here’s what they prayed...READ SLIDE 6. Rather than praying for preservation, - their prayer focused on 3 other elements 1) (click) They focused on God’s character...”Sovereign Lord” (absolute control) 2) That allowed them to seize this Moment of Urgency as they cont. to pray (click) - so they prayed for “great boldness” for themselves 3) Then they prayed for a great work from God (click) ... signs & wonders 7. This Moment of Urgency was a defining moment/crossroad for Jerus. Church - they could miss it, ignore it, or capitalize on it 8. APPLIC: Have their been similar (less dramatic?) Moments of Urgency for your church? - have you recognized them, capitalized on them, or missed them? 9. So how did God answer this crazy prayer of the Jerus. Ch.? NEXT SLIDE 5. NEXT SLIDE
1. We find God’s Answer in v.31 (READ Slide) - their prayer for BOLDNESS was dramatically answered! 2. How a church identifies and responds to its Moments of Urgency is critical - it will determine its openness to refreshing its vision 2. NEXT SLIDE
1. Take a few minutes and fill out Moments of Urgency WORKSHEET - think back 1 year, 3 years, 5 years - then evaluate how the church responded to the Urgencies (click) - is there a pattern of response that emerges? 2. In groups of 3 or 4, share your worksheets NEXT SLIDE
1. Knowing your church is crucial to having a vision that fits your church - a good tool for this is the SWOT Assessment - it can also help you identify Moments of Urgency for your church 2. So what is SWOT? (click) - it’s an acronym S = (click) Strengths (internal) W = (click) (internal) O = (click) (external) T = (click) (external) 3. HANDOUT: SWOT Assessment Worksheet - take a few minutes to fill this out re: your church - list as many items in each box as you can think of * you’ll narrow them down later (7 min.) 4. Now consolidate your answers - work w/people fr. your same church, if here * or in group of 2 or 3 - identify the top 3 in each area 5. Now synthesize this info... - what do you learn from it? * Moments of Urgency? * Un-noticed opportunities? * Hidden weaknesses or threats? * areas of focus - ILLUS : One church discovered they had little experience in evangelism - so how could their vision of reaching people in cmty. for X be met? 6. Based on this brief analysis of your SWOT, - identify the TOP 3 ISSUES your church needs to address this year - CAUTION: Don’t get distracted with peripherals - this isn’t about: buying new tech equip., recarpeting the platform 7. It’s about the issues that will move your church toward bec.ing a Mobilized Ch. - and don’t lose sight of that that Goal NEXT SLIDE
1. Knowing ourselves (as a church) - and recognizing that Moments of Urgency come as opportunities to be what God wants us to be * and that is to Become a Mobilized Church w/a Kingdom Impact 2. Review: This involves 3 Elements - (click) Reproducing Disciples - (click) Reproducing Leaders - (click) Reproducing Congregations 3. This is why you’re going through the work of being ReFreshed as a church!! - b/c you want to be a church that has a KINGDOM IMPACT NEXT SLIDE
1. And let me finish by reminding you of how various elements work together - we’ve talked about a variety of issues and elements today & this week - here’s a reminder of how their interplay leads to Impact 2. You recall it was a Crisis in Jerus. Ch. (Acts 4) that produced a Moment of Urgency - (click) so their Crisis led to Urgency - b/c they responded to that Urgency w/brave faith * it led them to a fresh Vision (click) 3. That gave them a new understanding of what they could become - & they committed themselves to letting God bring Change (click) - and mark my word: Implementing Vision will bring Change 4. And, of course, you know the next point... - not everyone in the church gets excited about Change! - and that means that Change often leads to some level of Conflict (click) 5. And then you have a choice to make: - how will we respond to the Conflict? * will we run from it? * will we face it so we can resolve it? 6. If Conflict is addressed and resolved, - it will pave the way for IMPACT! NEXT SLIDE
1. And IMPACT comes from a Mobilized Church - which by now you should know is a church... (click) 2. READ... - has a shared vision and effective strategies for impacting its community and the world by reproducing disciples, leaders and congregations THE END
