Assignment title Assignment 4 Controlling Industrial Reactions
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Realise that reaction rates can be altered and manipulated in order to maximise the yield of wanted
products, but at times these optimal conditions are compromised for practical and monetary reasons.
Scenario
As one of the chemists at a local plant, you have been asked to explain to the people operating the
chemical plant, the factors which affect rate, yield and atom economy of reactions.
Task 1
You will be undertaking a series of four experiments to examine how the rate of a reaction can be altered.
Methods for these experiments will be given to you.
Complete results tables for the four experiments and draw at least one reaction rate graph.
This provides evidence for P5
Task 2
Discover how ammonia is made in industry and in particular how changing the rate of reaction affects this
industrial process.
This provides evidence for M5
Task 3
Analyse graphs given to you in order to;
• determine how different factors affect the yield of an industrial reaction,
• use your findings to establish how industry can maximise yield
• and optimise atom economy
This provides evidence for D3
