Denver is located in Colorado south of Fort Collins and north of Colorado Springs. It is situated east of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 5,280 feet, which has earned it the nickname "Mile High City". Two rivers, Cherry Creek and South Platte, run through the city, which has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters.
