The Symbiotic Relationship between Clownfishes and Sea Anemones By Shahmeer Shahid
What is a symbiotic relationship? A symbiotic relationship is when two organisms rely on each other for food and/or survival etc. For example , an oxpecker bird pecks bugs from an antelope’s fur. These bugs feed on the antelope. The oxpecker enjoys a healthy meal while the antelope gets a good grooming. That means that they have a symbiotic relationship. A clownfish attracts tiny fish ,that are like krill, with its bright colours. The sea anemone is a carnivorous animal, not a plant, that eats these fish when the clownfish passes through it. The anemone has stinging tentacles that harm predators. The clownfish hides, from these predators, between the tentacles. Luckily the clownfish has a thick layer of mucus that protects it.
SCRIPT Anemone- Hey clownfish! Clownfish- Yah. Anemone- I think you’ve started to disrespect us lately! Clownfish- How? I didn’t notice. We were just swimming about minding our own buss--- Anemone- Exactly! Everyday you just swim through our tentacles without saying a word! I mean you could at least say thank you! I mean we did save your lives! Clownfish- I get your point. But come to think about it, you guys have started to disrespect us! Anemone- How? Clownfish- Everyday we give you food. And you just stay silent! You could at least say ‘hey’! Anemone- I see your point. I’ll tell the others. Clownfish- And me too.

Samuel the Clownfish Samuel used to be a free clownfish. He had a healthy life with his sea anemone, Jack. Well, that was back when he was alive. He died a week after he was taken from freedom, the Pacific Ocean, kindness and Jack. He was taken two weeks before the day of Halloween. He died a week before Halloween and was thrown into the toilet pot. And on every Halloween, he would come out of the toilet, and haunt whichever family lived in that house at that time. Now Samuel (as I told you already) wasn’t always like this. He used to be happy little fellow.
CONTINUED This is what happened to him… He lived with a anemone called Jack. They had a good meal everyday. One day Samuel was swimming about, attracting plankton when a gigantic kind of ‘ non-webbed fin came towards him. Samuel thought it was a predator so he started swimming towards Jack. But he wasn’t there! Samuel panicked. He swam in all directions. Then he looked up and saw Jack in a giant net! He was paralyzed. On that one-millionth of a second the un- webbed fin caught him. Then he fainted. He woke up when he was thrown into a whirlpool. Well , at least it felt like he was thrown into a whirlpool. It was actually him being poured , with the water around him, into a bowl. Samuel was so startled, that he fainted again. He woke up after a while. then he took the moment to look around him. He didn’t realize that this would be his home for the next week. Then something fell on him. It was very small. Then by mere coincidence, he ate it. He ate it because he was so angry and felt very aggressive. But he realized that it tasted good! Then more came and he ate them all. But he didn't realize that a human was sprinkling it onto him! The next few days were not good ones. Everyday Samuel would mourn for Jack. He also realized that some of his features were no good anymore. For example there was not much space in the bowl so his fins weren’t that handy. Though the thick layer of mucus was useful . It was very cold in the bowl so the mucus kept him warm. But then, a week after he was captured, Samuel the Clownfish died. He died because he was to grief stricken. That is what happened to Samuel the clownfish.
Interesting Features Some of the features I thought were interesting are the thick layer of mucus from the clownfish and the stinging tentacles from the anemone. I thought they were weird and cool!

Editor's Notes

  1. Thick layer of mucus keeps warm‘’ protects like divers suit“” protects from stinging tentacles of anemoneFins to swim helps swim better fast predators“” helps escape faster
  2. Lots of prey‘’ of rocks
  3. What if its moved to a bowl with no salt water and no anemone
