The Story of Two White-Bearded Englishman! Are All Worldviews Equally Valid?
2. Brief Biography
John Charles Ryle (10 May 1816 – 10 June 1900) was the first
Anglican bishop of Liverpool.
*Ryle was educated at Eton and at Oxford, where he was Craven Scholar in 1836.
*The son of a wealthy banker, he was destined for a career in politics before choosing a path
of ordained ministry.
*While hearing Ephesians 2 read in church in 1838, he was changed forever. He now
understood what the gospel of grace and salvation through faith in Christ alone really meant.
*For 38 years he was a parish vicar; he became a leader of the evangelical party in the
Church of England.
3. Ryle on the Sovereignty of God and
the Bible.
• “I cannot understand how any one can be called a believer of the Bible who denies
God's providence over this world. For my own part, I believe thoroughly that God
has not changed. I believe that He is governing all things on earth as much now as
He was in the Old Testament days.”
• “Just as the telescope and microscope show us that there is order and design in all
the works of God’s hand, from the greatest planet down to the least insect, so
does the Bible teach us that there is wisdom, order and design in all the events of
our daily life. There is no such thing as “chance”, “luck”, or “accident” in the
Christian journey through this world. All is arranged and appointed by God: and all
things are ‘working together’ for the believer’s good (Rom. 8:28).”
4. Brief Biography
Charles Robert Darwin, FRS (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an
English naturalist. He established that all species of life have descended
over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory
that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he
called natural selection.
*Darwin's was educated at the University of Edinburgh and then later at the University of Cambridge.
*When going to Cambridge to become an Anglican clergyman, he did not doubt the literal truth of the Bible.
*His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle established him as an eminent geologist whose observations and theories
supported Charles Lyell's uniformitarian ideas.
*By his return he was critical of the Bible as history, and wondered why all religions should not be equally valid.
*He was increasingly troubled by the problem of evil.
* Many argue that he lost his faith after the death of his ten-year-old daughter
5. Darwin on the Bible and God!
• “Thus disbelief {in the Bible} crept over me at a very slow
rate, but was at last complete. The rate was so slow that I
felt no distress, and have never since doubted even for a
single second that my conclusion was correct. I can indeed
hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be
true; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show
that the men who do not believe, and this would include
my Father, Brother and almost all my best friends, will be
everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine.”
6. Similarities!
• 1. Both lived in Victorian England at the same time (had the same political and
social influences, etc.)
• 2. Both received superior educations.
• 3. Both experienced family deaths that impacted them greatly. (Darwin 3 children,
Ryle two wives)

not because it can be proven by logical
coherent evidence to be true, but because the
only alternative, special creation, is clearly
incredible.” Professor D.M.S. Watson
