The curve was introduced in a 2012
speech by chairman of the Council
of Economic Advisers Alan Krueger,
and the President’s Economic
Report to Congress, using data from
labor economist Miles Corak. The
curve plotted "intergenerational
income elasticity"—i.e. the
likelihood that someone will inherit
their parents' relative position of
income level—and inequality in the
United States and other countries.
The name of the curve refers to the
novel X, where the lowly born
protagonist rises to the social set of
the north shore of Long Island.

aviation career in 1909. X joined the French army at the
outbreak of World War I. On April 18, 1915, his fuel line
clogged and he glided to a landing on the German side

French army.
On October 5, 1918, he was shot down and killed near
Vouziers, Ardennes, a month shy of the end of the war.
