• Each year approximately 1,800 children
under the age of five undergo dental surgery
under general anaesthetic – more frequently
than any other cause.
• About 1,600 more are placed on long
waiting lists for as long as 12-18 months.
• 43% of all paediatric surgeries under GA for
children under 6, were dentally related.

15. Building a Healthier Saskatchewan
• $40 million in additional funding for the
Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative this year
• “Sooner, Safer, Smarter” surgical care through
improved access to key health services
• The goal is to see more patients receive surgery
sooner.
• From March 2010, the number of patients
waiting more than 12 months declined by 12%
and the number waiting more than 18 months
has dropped by 26%.

Other initiatives underway through the Surgical
Initiative include funding to support:
• an additional 1400 dental procedures through
the Surgery Centre of Saskatoon in the
Saskatoon Health Region
• an additional 60-70 procedures, including a
second dental surgery suite in Prairie North
• an additional 130 dental surgeries through 3
new itinerant dental surgeons in the Kelsey Trail
Health Region
• expansion of services through the Omni Centre
in Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region

• PHB focus will be on upstream
interventions related to improving oral
health through prevention and education.
• Involves exploring opportunities for
collaboration with various partners who
share our interest in reducing dental decay
in young children.
