This document provides information about integrating Web 2.0 tools into instruction. It discusses exposing teachers to tools like Wikis, blogs, and other collaborative technologies. Guidelines are provided for appropriate use of these tools in schools. Specific tools are demonstrated like Wikispaces, Kidblog, and Edmodo. Ideas are shared for how to set up and use these tools in the classroom. Challenges for younger grades are addressed. Connections to curriculum standards are emphasized.
2. Objective
• Expose teachers to Web 2.0 technology
tools for teaching
• Provide time to plan and collaborate with
peers ways in which the tools may be
implemented into instruction
9. HCPS and Acceptable Use
What to remember when using Web 2.0:
– No Student Emails
– No personal images or full names
– Review ethical/appropriate use with students
HCPS 2011
10. Permissions Scantron
“ I grant permission for my child to use educationally
appropriate and HCPS approved web-based Web
2.0 to publish to the internet”
“When using Web 2.0 applications in HCPS, personal
information will be limited to the student’s first
name and last initial. Students will be allowed to
post their ideas and opinions, but not their age,
email address, photographs, or other sensitive
information. Web 2.0 tools are an extension of the
classroom and appropriate use of the Internet will
be expected.”
11. K-2 Grade Level Challenges
• Username and
passwords
• Typing skills
• How to combat the
challenges?
– Lots of practice
– Get parents involved
– Pair up with another
grade level
– Keep it simple
“Students were highly motivated and they
are so much more independent in signing in
on our wiki and blog site! That has made my
life so much easier and I am able to start
taking them further with technology
concepts.
Being that I have my kids work on our wiki
and blog often has made a world of
difference!!! Most of my kids can maneuver
thru my site with ease!
Today, they left school saying they can't wait
to show their parents all that we added to
our blog! We added our Kerpoof drawings
and the kids commented on a video and
asked questions on the video I created.”
- Tracy Borkowicz, HCPS Kindergarten Teacher
13. What is a wiki?
• The word wiki comes from the Hawaiian
word for "quick."
• It also stands for "what I know is...."
• A wiki incorporates both of those meanings -
it is a website where users quickly share
what they know and share what they do.
• One of the most well known wiki’s is
Wikipedia, the world’s largest encyclopedia.
14. Harford County Guidelines
• Harford County is endorsing the use of
Wikispaces (educator account) to use within
classrooms.
• Wikispaces allows for an easy WYSIWYG
(what you see is what you get) page editor,
image and file upload, page linking, widgets,
page histories, discussion forums, easy setup
and collaboration.

15. Planning Your Wiki
• Before you begin to create your wiki,
consider using the Wiki Planning Sheet.
– This will help you develop an idea for the
direction you want to go with your wiki.
– This will make navigation easier for students.
– This will also help you to be sure that you have
strong curriculum connections.

18. Setting Up Your Wiki
1. Open the Wikispaces Setup Sheet (a print
copy has also been provided)
2. Follow the directions for Create an account
for a free K-12 wiki.
3. Skip the Upgrade your wiki to the K-12 Plus
plan.
19. Application
• Using your planning sheet develop a lesson
within your wiki thinking about how you will
engage students.
• Examples:
– i. Post a Discovery Streaming video and have
students respond to a particular question(s).
– ii. Establish groups from a book and set up a
discussion group.
– iii. Add interactive content related to topic or
unit, links, podcasts etc.
21. Edmodo
• If using Edmodo, use this step by step guide.
• School Codes for Edmodo (Upper right corner)
• After your student groups are established you will
need to provide your students with their group code.
• At the student login screen, students will be
prompted for their group code, username and
password, first name and last name.
• Students should not be providing any email address
as none is required.
• Set up the first post that you will use with students.

Schools recommended Wikispaces provider.
• A similar blog like feature within Wikispaces
is the discussion tool available on each wiki

32. Curriculum Connections
• Think about the many ways you could use
these tools in the classroom. These links also

34. Planning to Use a Web 2.0 Tool
• What are the unique features sets and
characteristics of the tool that add value to
the learning experience, over and above,
what might be expected without the
technology?
• How does this expand or extend what I am
already doing?
• How does this connect to the Common Core
Standards?
51. Professional Development

• Edublog Awards
• Kathy Schrock’s Blog
• Free Tech for Teachers Blog
• Follow on Twitter – Richard Byrne, Daring
Librarian, etc.
• Pinterest Resources
