Patients’ own expectations for technology are growing and they have shared that digital technologies need to become more integral in the care delivery process. In the U.S., nearly half of Americans would opt for online capabilities vs. handling over the phone, such as getting lab test results, filling out paperwork ahead of a doctor’s appointment, accessing their medical records, and filling prescriptions. Given the increasing desire for a tech-driven care experience, patients are helping to spur technology adoption by their providers. As the population ages, technology adoption and information exchange within the long term and post-acute care settings becomes increasingly more important. How can post-acute care agencies overcome challenges of limited resources (financial and workforce) to bring patient care delivery into the 21st century? Patients who take prescription medications for chronic conditions are also feeling the pain from a lack of tech-adoption when their doctors typically don’t offer them access to online condition management tools or make themselves available online or via email for questions. Dr. Van Terheyden will discuss what needs to happen to break down these barriers.

Mounting interest in the field of mHealth—the provision of health-related services via mobile communica-tions—can be traced to the evolution of several interrelated trends. In many parts of the world, epidemicsand a shortage of healthcare workers continue to present grave challenges for governments and healthproviders. Yet in these same places, the explosive growth of mobile communications over the past decadeoffers a new hope for the promotion of quality healthcare. Among those who had previously been left behindby the ‘digital divide,’ billions now have access to reliable technology. There is a growing body of evidence that demonstrates the potential of mobile communications to radicallyimprove healthcare services—even in some of the most remote and resource-poor environments. This reportexamines issues at the heart of the rapidly evolving intersection of mobile phones and healthcare. It helps thereader to understand mHealth’s scope and implementation across developing regions, the health needs towhich mHealth can be applied, and the mHealth applications that promise the greatest impact on heath careinitiatives. It also examines building blocks required to make mHealth more widely available through sustain-able implementations. Finally, it calls for concerted action to help realize mHealth’s full potential.

Doctors who use social media not only can spread the word about new medical updates, treatments or other relevant news, but also specific information about their practices. Dr. Howard Luks, an orthopedic surgeon, says: “Only the oil refinery business lags behind health care in digital media adoption.” For doctors, it is no longer practical not to have an online presence. While it might seem foolish to be updating a Facebook page or uploading YouTube videos, there are plenty of advantages.

The Healthcare Industry Can No Longer Ignore Social Media As the healthcare industry continues to constantly change, it is extremely important that healthcare related organizations remain up-to-date and relevant in their industry. Today more than ever, people look to online sources for medical help before even contacting a doctor or other professional source. In fact, more than 40% of consumers say that information found via social media affects the way they deal with their health. Unfortunately, some online sources may not be as reliable as they should be, especially when it comes to someone’s health and wellness. With an influx of healthcare organizations available, finding a way to stand out in the industry can be challenging. Healthcare organizations need to take risks in order to stand out and stay ahead of the game. This is where social media comes in, and here’s why it can no longer be ignored!

Described as the most important transformation challenge in the public sector today the NHS website, nhs.uk, is one of the UK’s largest, most important websites, with over 50 million visits a month, tens of thousands of pages, and a target audience that is, quite literally, everyone. What will it take for the NHS website to become people’s preferred first port of call to understand, manage and take control of their health? Among other things, a new information architecture focused on how patients understand their health, not a clinical view of conditions, or a publishers view of content formats. One that, done right, should provide a solid platform for all patient-facing digital health services for the next decade. This slide deck from a presentation at UX Scotland 2018 covers our insights from starting to tackle this massive, multi-year challenge. It introduces the new information seeking modes/personas we developed to describe how people really look for information about their health, the new navigation patterns we've introduced, and why some traditional IA approaches present particular dangers when applied to health information.
