Important for important to review meeting handout
1. “Important to/Important for Support” Review
This review is used to make sure that there is balance in a person’s life so
they have what is important to them as well as what they need to keep
themselves healthy and safe.
Before the meeting
1. Meet with the individual
Find out how they want to be supported
Tell the person what will happen at the
meeting
Record anything the person wants to say.
2. Meet with family and friends
Tell them what will happen in the meeting.
Find out if they need any support to contribute
in the meeting.
Ask them to think about what’s important to
and important for the person so that they
come prepared to the meeting.
You may want to create the ‘Like and Admire’
poster with them before the meeting to save
time in the review.
3. Meet with staff
Tell them about the structure of the meeting.
Ask them to think about what’s important to
and important for the person so they come to
the meeting prepared.
Add to the ‘Like and Admire’ poster if you are
before the meeting the meeting.

2. At the Meeting
Making Introductions (10 minutes)
Ask everyone to say who they are and write
everyone’s name on a piece of flipchart paper.
Say what is going to happen in the meeting.
Ground Rules (5 Minutes)
Set with the group some ground rules and write
these on flipchart paper. These are to help the
meeting go smoothly and for everyone to feel
happy and safe.
Like and Admire Poster (15 Minutes)
Ask everyone what they like and admire about the
person. Record what is said on flipchart paper. If
you have done this before the meeting read out
what has been said.
Make sure people are saying things that are
appropriate to a person of that age or culture
regardless of their disability.
Important to the Person (10 minutes)
This section should only include –
What the person perceives as being important
to him or her
Those things the person tells us are important
(with words or behaviour)
It must not include -
What people think should be important to
the person
What is important to others

3. Important for Support (10 minutes)
This says what a person needs to do to stay healthy
and safe. It identifies what other people need to
know and do to support this so that -
The person has what’s important to him or her
The person stays healthy and safe
The person is supported to be a valued
member of their community
Other people stay safe
When information is sensitive it is important to make
good judgments about what should be shared in a
review meeting and what should be recorded.
What’s Working/ What’s not Working (20 Minutes)
Put ticks and crosses next to what is working and not
working or put up flipchart paper with headings of
“what’s working” and “what’s not working” from the
point of view of -
The Individual
Family and Friends
Staff
Ask everyone to grab a flipchart pen and write
under the appropriate heading. Support people
who don’t write to add their views.
Questions or issues that we are struggling with (10
Minutes)
Record on flip chart -

Where there isn’t enough information
Areas other people need to get involved
