2. COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE:
Dell Hymes proposed the concept of communicative
competence. (June 7, 1927,Portland, Oregon–
November 13, 2009, Charlottesville, Virginia)
The basic idea of communicative competence
remains the ability to use language appropiately,
both receptively and productively, in real
situations.
Communicative tests are intended to be a
measure of how the test takers are able to use
language in real life situation.
3. Characteristics of communicative language testing
Communicative tests are often very
context-specific.
A communicative language test
should be based on a description of
the language that the test takers need
to use.
Communicative Tests should reflect the
communicative situation in which the
test taker are likely to find themselves
4. Examples of communicative language tests:
Students in a class may listen to a
lecture, but they later need to use
information from the lecture in a paper.
In taking part in a group discussion, they need to use
both listening and speaking skill and later have a
comprehension assessment evaluation.
Even reading a book for pleasure may be
followed by recommending it to a friend and
telling the friend why you liked it.
6. The discrete/ embedded dimensión
Discrete:
Vocabulary is
tested as an
independent
construct. Embedded
Vocabulary is
tested as part of a
larger construct.
7. THE SELECTIVE/ COMPREHENSIVE
DIMENSION
SELECTIVE: A
TARGETED SET
OF VOCABULARY
ITEMS
COMPREHENSIVE:
ALL WORDS IN A
SPECIFIC AREA
