Gonaives, resource in the
Haiti classroom
Objective (grades 6-8):
1, To have students develop a sense of cultural competency and appreciation regarding of
issues of water insecurity
2. Students would work together to understand how filtration works and complete water
quality testing both initially and at the end of the project
3. Students would work on designing and producing an effective water filtration system with
a minimal amount of materials for the least cost
3. Haiti is a beautiful country filled with proud, hardworking
people. However, it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Many, many Haitians struggle just to get simple basic necessities, clean
water being chief among them.
Haiti, like other poor countries, is riddled with water projects that,
after installment, breakdown or are inadequately maintained. Our goal
is to transfer knowledge to people in Gonaives, Haiti (KID TO KID)
regarding how to make an inexpensive, self sustain a water
filtration system that removes impurities that sicken thousands
of Haitian children and adults every year.
4. Students will take fresh water samples from
Lake Ontario.
• Complete initial water quality assessments
• Using a variety of low cost material (sand,
gravel, plastic containers, charcoal, fabric)
make a bio filter
• Students will assess water quality of the
resulting effluent.
• Students will generate a video and a
website detailing the advantages of their
research about filtration and their approach
in designing their system
• Students will participate will webinar via
Skype, connecting with people living in
a village on the outskirts of Gonaives Haiti Kids doing
