3. Female Pattern Baldness
Unlike men, women with Androgenetic alopecia don’t go completely
bald. Hair thinning and fining are probably the only worst-case
scenarios to happen to a woman. Plus, they get to preserve their
frontal hair line. This is due to the fact that they are incapable of
secreting semen.
Women experience diffuse hair loss which means the pattern of
thinning is spread throughout the scalp. Female pattern hair loss is
classified into three stages according to the Ludwig’s scale. In the
first stage, visible thinning of the hair in the crown becomes visible
but there is no loss of the frontal hairline. In the second stage, hair
thinning has become more elaborate and the part width has
increased since the first stage. In the last stage, hair thinning nears
baldness on the crown but the hairline is preserved.

4. Treatment for Female Pattern Baldness
As implied earlier, women with androgenetic alopecia may only have limited
options when it comes to choosing the perfect treatment for hair loss. There
are three treatments which women can choose from:
5.Spironolactone
Anti-androgen drugs, such as Finasteride and Dutasteride, are commonly
used medication to prevent further hair loss. Spironolactone is another anti-
androgen that is specifically formulated for women. It has been approved
by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat high blood pressure
and congestive heart failures. As a hair loss treatment, its effectiveness
however still has to be widely proven. In small bodies of literature, women
with hirsutism (excess hairiness) responded to spironolactone treatment.
Side-effects of the drug include gastrointestinal tract bleeding, breast
enlargement, and/or reduced sexual drive.

5. 2. Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone Replacement Therapy is another option. It is commonly
prescribed to menopausal women since hormonal production slows
down at this stage. To recreate a balance in the hormones, physicians
advise HRT which contains female hormones – estrogen and
progesterone.
HRT reverses hair loss in that female hormones fight the
formation of DHT. But while it is effective in impeding further hair thinning
and baldness, it is not recommended for long-time use. HRT entails an
increased risk of heart disease, breast cancer, blood clots, and stroke
when taken in excess amounts.
3. Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is also another treatment for hair loss. It uses low-level
laser because of its therapeutic effects on the living cells. Laser therapy
is safe and effective. In fact, it can be more effective in women in that
they have a diffuse hair loss pattern.
