Dear Judges:
My name is Jose Luis Sanchez, and I plan to one day graduate from Georgia State University. At
this university I want to earn a business degree and use the lessons I will hopefully learn there to
help my father with our family businesses. Our businesses consist within a wide array of
establishments, such as: construction, landscaping and a restaurant. Unfortunately, we are going
through a difficult time economically, but I want to do my share to aid my family by studying at
a university and one day coming back with the tools necessary to help run a successful business.
For my senior project, I decided to learn how to be a manager since being a manager is a step
closer to running a business. While I was learning about what managing consists of, I decided to
make a survival kit: a bag with twenty items that I believe are essential and a manual.
The twenty items are tools that are meant to make a manager work with more ease in his work
environment. The great thing about the survival kit is that it also includes a manual explaining
the use of each item which consists of twenty pages. Each page explains: what use the item has,
and the situation where it would benefit a manager. I decided to make a survival kit when I
finished writing my research paper. In my research paper, I wrote about: the recession and how it
affected restaurants. It turns out, that the recession had caused many businesses to lose a lot of
money and had caused owners to change managing techniques. Many restaurants chose to teach
their managers and employees skills to attract customers, and that is what I am attempting to do
with my survival guide. One of the biggest obstacles I had with my product was coming up with
enough items to make a survival kit. At first, I believed being a manager would be easy, but I
soon realized that managers go through many stressful times. As a result, I made stress to be one
my main focuses in my survival guide. I believe that I included numerous items in the kit that
will be beneficial to coping with certain situations and handling them as best possible.
As a business man, there will come a time when I will have to identify situations in which my
business is being affected negatively.I am certain that I will have to do research and solve the
dilemmas, just as I have done so many instances during my senior project. During this year, I
have realized that I do have what it takes to be in the business world. I have the motivation to
work hard and be successful. I am able to find and solve problems. I enjoy interacting with
people. And I always think about the future when it comes to decisions. I am very much
interested in continuing my learning experience in this field. Repeating what I have stated
previously, I want to study at Georgia State University to broaden my knowledge and
perspectives about the business world.
2. Overall, I truly did enjoy my senior project. It was very strenuous at times and tested my
patience and will power, but it genuinely gave me an insight into what I imagine my future
career. If I had not done this senior project, I would have probably gone to college not feeling
completely sure about my major or what I want to strive for. Fortunately for me and many other
students, we have had the opportunity to analyze our future carefully. I really appreciate all of
you being here today, and I hope you enjoy my presentation.
Sincerely,
Jose Luis Sanchez
