METRO CASH AND CARRY
                          PAKISTAN Pvt. Ltd.

History & Services :
METRO Cash & Carry was founded in 1964 with the first store opening in the German
city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.METRO Cash & Carry is defined as a wholesaler because
of the type of its customer base: exclusively professionals and businesses are allowed to
purchase at METRO Cash & Carry centers.

The “cash & carry” concept works on a principle where customers select their
merchandize at the store, pay in cash and transport it themselves. This revolutionary sales
concept is geared towards the specific needs of commercial customers and is the
backbone of the company.
In 2004, its jubilee year, METRO Cash & Carry International alone succeeded in
increasing its revenues by 5.4 percent. This enabled METRO Cash & Carry to emerge as
the biggest sales division of METRO Group, the third largest retailer worldwide. Today,
METRO Cash & Carry is one of the largest international wholesale companies in the
world, operating more than 600 outlets in 29 countries. METRO offers a high-quality
assortment of products, ranging between 20,000 and 50,000 items, all under one roof.
The entire range offers an excellent price-to-benefit ratio.

Introduction
METRO in Pakistan:
METRO Cash & Carry announced its operations in Pakistan in January 2006. Since then,
it has established itself as a potential market leader in wholesale. METRO is an
international modern wholesaler offering a mix of food and non-food products to its
registered card-holding customers through a national network of cash and carry outlets.
This concept offers a wholesale solution to professional business needs.
Under the supervision of Managing Director Mr. Giovanni Soranzo, METRO Cash &
Carry Pakistan has opened its first store in the city of Lahore in October 2007.
The company’s country head office is also based in Lahore and currently employs over
400 people in two offices. METRO Cash & Carry plans to invest in Pakistan on a
sustained and reliable basis in the years to come. The company’s unique business model
offers potential for a decrease in market prices and promotion of local goods and
personnel.

Product range:
Each store is tailored to address the needs of professional customers. We offer a
wholesale price that leaves the customer room for healthy margins and provide a one-
stop-shop for the customer.

It offers following types of items:
    Food
    Non Food
    Own brands
In the food range, freshness is our first priority. This is guaranteed by the efficient
supply-chain and quality control management we have in-place.
In non-food, we offer only products that are up-to-date in terms of technology and design,
and meet all safety standards.

METRO Cash & Carry Pakistan Wholesale Centers:
Pakistan’s first wholesale center has opened in Lahore in October 2007, followed by a
second store opening on 3rd April 2008 in Islamabad. This will soon grow into a network
of countrywide METRO Cash & Carry wholesale centers.
METRO Cash & Carry plans Pakistan market entry
First wholesale store to open in last quarter of 2007

• Positive business perspective for self-service wholesale
• Strong position in Asia’s growth regions

METRO Cash & Carry, international market leader in self-service wholesale, plans its
market entry into Pakistan. With this move, the retailer would expand both its
international presence and its activities in the important growth region Asia.
The goal of Supply Chain at Metro is to efficiently handle thousands of orders, shipments
and deliveries and ensure that goods arrive at the right place at the right time. Supply
Chain Management plays an important role in our high-performance logistics system and
enhances our capacity to supply food and non-food products on a daily basis with
consistent high quality, diversity and freshness. For the first time in Pakistan, Metro Cash
& Carry offers a platform for Fruit & Vegetables equipped with modern accessories for
product processing. This ensures hygienic, temperature-controlled, clean and packed fruit
and vegetables as per international standards of Hazard Analysis of Critical Control
Points (HACCP).
If all pre-conditions are met, the first METRO Cash & Carry store in Pakistan could be in
operation late 2007. Pakistan would then become the 31st country where the METRO
Group is active and the company’s 5th Asian location after China, Japan, Vietnam and
India.
With this move, METRO Cash & Carry would further solidify its position as one of the
world’s most international retailers.
METRO Cash & Carry’s business concept of self-service wholesale will in particular
benefit small and medium-sized businesses from the restaurant, retail and service sector
which will be offered a comprehensive and high-quality product assortment at favourable
wholesale prices. At the same time, METRO Cash & Carry also contributes directly to
the establishment and further development of modern distribution structures.
METRO Group has joined the aid program initiated by President Pervaiz Musharraf.

CAREER PLATED

How did you build interest in this carrier?
Indeed, this occupation belongs to my academic background. I started my carrier from
this field and this field turns to be more exciting to me.

How did you prepare for this carrier?
I was really interested in Computer Sciences since my academic start. Mathematics and
Physics were my beloved subjects and I joined university to pursue my academic carrier
in this field. As I gained more about this field, I decided to make my way through this.

What do you like or dislike about this carrier?
I love and enjoy my job. I take my job as my passion and the only thing I dislike about
my job is the lack of sleep because sometimes it turns to be really hectic that it becomes
very difficult to have enough time to sleep but among all that I love my job and my work.

What are the current and future trends of this job?
I think without networking, no one could move up to make this world so closer. This field
makes the world from spreaded corners to more as global village. So it's very important
in today's world of cut throat competition.
As far as future trends are concerned I feel that the world will be more and more closer
and the best part of networking is communication and communication plays a versatile
role in making the lives more easier at the doorsteps of the best convenience. The base
behind the communication is networking as a backbone. Even the internet which is
making the whole world together on a single plate form is networking.

What is your typical or usual day on job?
T.G.I.F. Thank God it's Friday. The typical best day is the Friday because it's weekend.
But I don't like Monday in context of work because after a nice weekend you have to deal
with usual faces and usual work.

What skills would you prefer in your employment?
In scope of my work I would like to control and drive people with the privilege to have
administration rights and security. Communication skills always play major role in your
carrier.

How would you rate the following skills?

•Verbal/oral communication

•Non-verbal communication

•Listening

•Negotiating

•Managing people in group
•Managing conflicts

•Any other
The thing what I feel about these skills is that these are closely interrelated with one
other. A single skill cannot make a person successful in professional arena where
everyone wants to compete other, you need to be jack of all.
Both verbal and non-verbal communication polishes negotiating skills. If you use your
words and expressions wisely, you can easily convey the exact crux of the message.
Now, negotiating, which is very important in your professional carrier because you have
to interact with many people with different state of mind. If you negotiate effectively,
you can easily handle people around you and manage groups and teams and their issues
and conflicts. And the best way to do all this, listen first and then speak because your
"words" are very precious. So listen carefully, understand what is being spoken and then
speak up

Analysis/Conclusion

Analyze Meeting:

We interviewed Mr. Mazhar Dar, the Network Specialist from I.T department of
METRO CASH AND CARRY Pvt. Ltd. When we entered the office, we inquired
about him and the reciptionist told us to wait for few minutes because he was busy in the
meeting. We sat there but after a short while he called us to his room. He excused to keep
us waiting , after that he offered us coffee. Soon after, his cell phone rang and he went
out to take his call. He came back after 2-3 minutes. We introduced ourselves and started
to ask questions immidiatly because he told us that his new project is about to launch in
Islamabad within next few days and he cannot give us more then half an hour. We started
the interview, after we asked a couple of questions his phone rang again and he excused
us to listen his call. He was talking to a vender about the equipment to be installed. It
seemed that he was very busy on his new project. The overall environment of the office
looked highly professional, but there was an element of restlessness among the
employees. It may be because they all were keenly involved on the launch of the
company's new project

Conclude Assertive/Agg/Passive:
During the meeting, we observed that he was really responsible person. He had the ability
to understand and respond to different situations effectively and comfortably. During the
interview he interacted with many people from which we concluded that he has the
ability to convince and deal with different types of people. But we found that he had a
little bit aggresive attitude towards his work/job. He told us that he love his work but his
work but his eagerness and exitement for the job involved aggrestion upto certain limit.
But apart from that he was very easy going and calm to handle issues.

Friendly/Sensitive to issues:
We found him very friendly person and it was easy to communicate with him. Our
overall experiance was quite good and we finished our work quickly. In the end he
apologised us for the disturbance during the interview and wished us good luck for our
academic and professional future.

As discussed earlier, he was very friendly and comfortable to communicate with. We had
a very limited time to judge weather he was sensitive to issues. But the way he
communicated, it seemed he was comitted to his work and can work really hard to fulfill
his comittments.

Your Personality grooming due to class presentations:

I made such type of formal presentation for the first time. Before that I never made such
of presentations. I feel such presentations are very important from every aspects, because
if you you are not effective in presenting what you want to say,(no matters how important
or useful it is) you cannot get the desired result or response.
For instance, if you cook something really delicious but don't present it well and just
throw it in the bowl, it doesn't look tempting and fails to attract anyone. On the contrary,
if you simply cook something but present it very nicely, it becomes more attractive and
                                                                   turns to be mouth watering.
In the same way, presentation plays a very important role in grooming your personality.
Good presentations results in good personality and attract people to listen to you. They
help you to confront different types of people and makes you strong enough to bear
criticism or difference of opinion on certain issues. It helps to present our views before
others confidently. The most important thing that really help us in our professional life is
confidence. So presentations plays a vital role in boosting up your confidence.
Now, personally what I feel about personality grooming through presentations, is that it
builds good communication skills in you and teaches you how to behave nicely with
people even if they oppose or criticize you. It makes you tactful to change the situation
according to the requirements and makes you familiar with non-verbal cues. I feel that
these should be further carried on in next semesters to prepare us for our professional
                                                                                       future.
ANALYSIS/CONCLUSION
Analysis of Meeting:
It was indeed a very informative meeting. Our source person Mr.Mazhar Dar was very
cooperative and nice Person. He told us about his carrier orientation and experiences. He
was highly educated and devoted person. He told us about his work and sources.
He had good communication skills that he believed his power to compete in this modern
global village. For him Negotiating, interacting and listening are the goals of his job.

Concluding AssertiveAggressivePassive

In the daily hectic routine of job it is difficult to give your precious time to someone but
Mr.Mazher was very kind, he fully delivered us as much as information that we needed
related to our project. He didn’t get rude and wasn’t irritating while talking with us. He
told us how he handles different situations in his job n how he manages his personal and
professional life. He had very appreciative social status. His personality was very
moderate and flexible. People who use assertive style while communicating are very
successful persons and easy to hang on with. He was very honest to his profession. He
had good self-esteem that made him sensitive to the rights of others also. His schedule
was very well organized that shows his discipline n punctuality.

Friendly and sensitive to issues:

Mr.Mazhar was of very friendly nature, he told us how he handles different issues
without any interruption and any disturbance in his management. He properly looked into
the cause root of the problems and found the most suitable and effective solution to them.
He cooperated us and had given us all the basic information and data regarding our
project. Thus a very friendly interacting interview was conducted and we didn’t face any
interruption or late or uncertain information about our project.

Personality Grooming Through Class Presentation:

Doing Presentations n Projects are the learning and informative skills that are compulsory
in today's competitive world. Interpersonal skills have developed more strong confidence
and excitement in me. I have learned how to work in groups and how I can make this
study line as my successful future carrier. I have learned the usage of Microsoft
PowerPoint & Microsoft Word in my presentations. I have developed more confidence
and have polished my talents. It has Internet surfing and use of informative websites are
the basic awareness through these Presentations & Projects. Thus Interpersonal skills
played a key role in my personality grooming and enabled me t search and present any

  • 1. METRO CASH AND CARRY PAKISTAN Pvt. Ltd. History & Services : METRO Cash & Carry was founded in 1964 with the first store opening in the German city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.METRO Cash & Carry is defined as a wholesaler because of the type of its customer base: exclusively professionals and businesses are allowed to purchase at METRO Cash & Carry centers. The “cash & carry” concept works on a principle where customers select their merchandize at the store, pay in cash and transport it themselves. This revolutionary sales concept is geared towards the specific needs of commercial customers and is the backbone of the company. In 2004, its jubilee year, METRO Cash & Carry International alone succeeded in increasing its revenues by 5.4 percent. This enabled METRO Cash & Carry to emerge as the biggest sales division of METRO Group, the third largest retailer worldwide. Today, METRO Cash & Carry is one of the largest international wholesale companies in the world, operating more than 600 outlets in 29 countries. METRO offers a high-quality assortment of products, ranging between 20,000 and 50,000 items, all under one roof. The entire range offers an excellent price-to-benefit ratio. 10 METRO Cash & Carry principles:
  • 2. The success of the company is based on the following principles: • Focus on professional customers • One-stop shopping • Efficient store concept designed for professional needs • Advanced customer service • Enhanced customers’ competitiveness • Excellence in supply chain and quality management • Strengthening of local suppliers • Development of national infrastructures • Career opportunities • Internationally transferable concept Introduction METRO in Pakistan: METRO Cash & Carry announced its operations in Pakistan in January 2006. Since then, it has established itself as a potential market leader in wholesale. METRO is an international modern wholesaler offering a mix of food and non-food products to its registered card-holding customers through a national network of cash and carry outlets. This concept offers a wholesale solution to professional business needs.
  • 3. Under the supervision of Managing Director Mr. Giovanni Soranzo, METRO Cash & Carry Pakistan has opened its first store in the city of Lahore in October 2007. The company’s country head office is also based in Lahore and currently employs over 400 people in two offices. METRO Cash & Carry plans to invest in Pakistan on a sustained and reliable basis in the years to come. The company’s unique business model offers potential for a decrease in market prices and promotion of local goods and personnel. Product range: Each store is tailored to address the needs of professional customers. We offer a wholesale price that leaves the customer room for healthy margins and provide a one- stop-shop for the customer. It offers following types of items:  Food  Non Food  Own brands In the food range, freshness is our first priority. This is guaranteed by the efficient supply-chain and quality control management we have in-place.
  • 4. In non-food, we offer only products that are up-to-date in terms of technology and design, and meet all safety standards. METRO Cash & Carry Pakistan Wholesale Centers: Pakistan’s first wholesale center has opened in Lahore in October 2007, followed by a second store opening on 3rd April 2008 in Islamabad. This will soon grow into a network of countrywide METRO Cash & Carry wholesale centers. METRO Cash & Carry plans Pakistan market entry First wholesale store to open in last quarter of 2007 • Positive business perspective for self-service wholesale • Strong position in Asia’s growth regions METRO Cash & Carry, international market leader in self-service wholesale, plans its market entry into Pakistan. With this move, the retailer would expand both its international presence and its activities in the important growth region Asia. The goal of Supply Chain at Metro is to efficiently handle thousands of orders, shipments and deliveries and ensure that goods arrive at the right place at the right time. Supply Chain Management plays an important role in our high-performance logistics system and enhances our capacity to supply food and non-food products on a daily basis with consistent high quality, diversity and freshness. For the first time in Pakistan, Metro Cash & Carry offers a platform for Fruit & Vegetables equipped with modern accessories for product processing. This ensures hygienic, temperature-controlled, clean and packed fruit and vegetables as per international standards of Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP). If all pre-conditions are met, the first METRO Cash & Carry store in Pakistan could be in operation late 2007. Pakistan would then become the 31st country where the METRO Group is active and the company’s 5th Asian location after China, Japan, Vietnam and India. With this move, METRO Cash & Carry would further solidify its position as one of the world’s most international retailers.
  • 5. METRO Cash & Carry’s business concept of self-service wholesale will in particular benefit small and medium-sized businesses from the restaurant, retail and service sector which will be offered a comprehensive and high-quality product assortment at favourable wholesale prices. At the same time, METRO Cash & Carry also contributes directly to the establishment and further development of modern distribution structures. METRO Group has joined the aid program initiated by President Pervaiz Musharraf. Company of Opportunity: METRO Cash & Carry is the international leading company in self-service wholesale. Each of these departments works for the growth and success of the company. The department of information technology mainly consists of 4 domain owners, country manager, networking managers and other employees. Our source person is from I.T department. He is performing the services as a network specialist in METRO. The hierarchy of his department starts from the country manager followed by network specialist and then other employees. Our source person is controlling 5 persons/employees with one country manager over him. Source Person: MR.Mazhar Dar INTERVIEW Name: Mazhar Dar Designation: Network Specialist Qualification: Masters in Information Technology CISCO certified Experience: Worked in ABACUS CONSULTING for one year, also worked in WARID TELECOM as an IT Executive before joining METRO CASH & CARRY Channels of Communication used in Organization: •Meetings •Conferences •E-mails
  • 7. •Telephone •Face to face •Fax What is the number of persons you interact daily on job? •Face to face •Telephone •Others About 75% of my interaction with people takes place through telephone/cell phone and 20% is done through face to face and the rest of interaction is through other sources, mostly via e-mails. What is the number of employees you send/convey messages or information? Well, it's difficult to tell the exact figure. But approximately, I convey information/messages up to 60 persons daily. What is the number of employees from whom you receive messages or information? As I said before, there is no exact figure but almost 45 persons convey me messages/information CAREER PLATED How did you build interest in this carrier? Indeed, this occupation belongs to my academic background. I started my carrier from this field and this field turns to be more exciting to me. How did you prepare for this carrier? I was really interested in Computer Sciences since my academic start. Mathematics and Physics were my beloved subjects and I joined university to pursue my academic carrier
  • 8. in this field. As I gained more about this field, I decided to make my way through this. What do you like or dislike about this carrier? I love and enjoy my job. I take my job as my passion and the only thing I dislike about my job is the lack of sleep because sometimes it turns to be really hectic that it becomes very difficult to have enough time to sleep but among all that I love my job and my work. What are the current and future trends of this job? I think without networking, no one could move up to make this world so closer. This field makes the world from spreaded corners to more as global village. So it's very important in today's world of cut throat competition. As far as future trends are concerned I feel that the world will be more and more closer and the best part of networking is communication and communication plays a versatile role in making the lives more easier at the doorsteps of the best convenience. The base behind the communication is networking as a backbone. Even the internet which is making the whole world together on a single plate form is networking. What is your typical or usual day on job? T.G.I.F. Thank God it's Friday. The typical best day is the Friday because it's weekend. But I don't like Monday in context of work because after a nice weekend you have to deal with usual faces and usual work. What skills would you prefer in your employment? In scope of my work I would like to control and drive people with the privilege to have administration rights and security. Communication skills always play major role in your carrier. How would you rate the following skills? •Verbal/oral communication •Non-verbal communication •Listening •Negotiating •Managing people in group
  • 9. •Managing conflicts •Any other The thing what I feel about these skills is that these are closely interrelated with one other. A single skill cannot make a person successful in professional arena where everyone wants to compete other, you need to be jack of all. Both verbal and non-verbal communication polishes negotiating skills. If you use your words and expressions wisely, you can easily convey the exact crux of the message. Now, negotiating, which is very important in your professional carrier because you have to interact with many people with different state of mind. If you negotiate effectively, you can easily handle people around you and manage groups and teams and their issues and conflicts. And the best way to do all this, listen first and then speak because your "words" are very precious. So listen carefully, understand what is being spoken and then speak up CONTACT RECORD Name: Mr. Mazhar Organization/company: Metro cash and carry Pak. We were unclear at certain points he removed our misunderstandings in a friendly manner and gave us appropriate feed back. Your Personality Grooming due to Class Presentations: During class presentation I learned how to work in a group and how can I resolve the conflicts in a group. It increased my listening skills as well as I come to know how I can improve my relations. With the help of this I can face the large audience very easily and unreluctently. We started the interview, after we asked a couple of questions his phone rang again and he excused us to listen his call. He was talking to a vender about the equipment to be installed. It seemed that he was very busy on his new project. The overall environment of the office looked highly professional, but there was an element of restlessness among the employees. It may be because they all were keenly involved on the launch of the company's new project Conclude Assertive/Agg/Passive: During the meeting, we observed that he was really responsible person. He had the ability to understand and respond to different situations effectively and comfortably. During the interview he interacted with many people from which we concluded that he has the ability to convince and deal with different types of people. But we found that he had a little bit aggresive attitude towards his work/job. He told us that he love his work but his work but his eagerness and exitement for the job involved aggrestion upto certain limit. But apart from that he was very easy going and calm to handle issues. Friendly/Sensitive to issues: We found him very friendly person and it was easy to communicate with him. Our overall experiance was quite good and we finished our work quickly. In the end he apologised us for the disturbance during the interview and wished us good luck for our academic and professional future. As discussed earlier, he was very friendly and comfortable to communicate with. We had a very limited time to judge weather he was sensitive to issues. But the way he communicated, it seemed he was comitted to his work and can work really hard to fulfill his comittments. Your Personality grooming due to class presentations: I made such type of formal presentation for the first time. Before that I never made such of presentations. I feel such presentations are very important from every aspects, because
  • 15. if you you are not effective in presenting what you want to say,(no matters how important or useful it is) you cannot get the desired result or response. For instance, if you cook something really delicious but don't present it well and just throw it in the bowl, it doesn't look tempting and fails to attract anyone. On the contrary, if you simply cook something but present it very nicely, it becomes more attractive and turns to be mouth watering. In the same way, presentation plays a very important role in grooming your personality. Good presentations results in good personality and attract people to listen to you. They help you to confront different types of people and makes you strong enough to bear criticism or difference of opinion on certain issues. It helps to present our views before others confidently. The most important thing that really help us in our professional life is confidence. So presentations plays a vital role in boosting up your confidence. Now, personally what I feel about personality grooming through presentations, is that it builds good communication skills in you and teaches you how to behave nicely with people even if they oppose or criticize you. It makes you tactful to change the situation according to the requirements and makes you familiar with non-verbal cues. I feel that these should be further carried on in next semesters to prepare us for our professional future.
