What is Instagram?
“Instagram is a free online photo sharing
and social network application. Instagram
allows users to upload, edit and share
photos with other members through the
Instagram website and social media sites
such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr”
(Rouse, para. 1, 2012).

That sure is sounding like a lot of people!

Did you know your private information
can be sold and purchased?

Well on Instagram it can!
If Instagram sells any part of their assets
to another organisation, they transfer all
information collected through the service
to the new owner (Instagram, 2013).

And this has already
happened! Ever heard
of small social media
phenomenon called
Facebook?
In September 2012,
Facebook purchased
Instagram and

YOU!

(Fox, 2012)



As part of this Facebook and Instagram have
shared insights and information with each other
(Fox, 2012).

This included Instagram updating their
Privacy Policy to highlight this new
collaboration (Instagram, 2013).

The updated terms of service claimed the right to license all
public Instagram photos to companies, effectively transforming
the website into the world's largest photo stock agency
(McCullagh, 2012).

Instagram users
were NOT happy!
In late December 2012, Instagram backtracked with CEO Kevin
Systrom announcing that the privacy terms would revert to the
version in place since the service launched in 2010 and “remove”
the language that caused a user revolt (Savides, 2012).


So for all
'Instagrammers'
out there...

Remember the
content you post on
Instagram...
isn't just yours.
