This document discusses alternative energy and initiatives by the Geoecology Energy Organization (GEO). It focuses on biomass and biochar as renewable and alternative energies. The Good Stoves and Biochar Communities Project (GSBC Project) implements an integrated approach in parts of Andhra Pradesh, India to produce and use biochar. Biochar is produced through efficient retorts and stoves from biomass sources like Prosopis juliflora. It is then used to enhance soils and increase crop yields in fields by 150-200% as part of the GSBC Project.

2. Alternative energy Alternative energy is an umbrella term that refers to any source of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels. In a general sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxideemissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. STATISTICS – BIOMASS USE IN RURAL AREAS The rural population in India relies heavily on traditional biomass-based fuels (fuelwood, crop residues, and animal dung) Approximately 96% of rural households are estimated to be using biofuels (NSSO 1997). These fuels dominate the domestic sector and are primarily used for cooking. Fuelwood is the primary energy source for cooking used by rural households (78%) (TERI 1999a). GEO 8
