What is lung cancer?
Cancer of the lung, like all cancers, results from an
abnormality in the body's basic unit of life, the cell.
Normally, the body maintains a system of checks
and balances on cell growth so that cells divide to
produce new cells only when new cells are needed.
Disruption of this system of checks and balances on
cell growth results in an uncontrolled division and
proliferation of cells that eventually forms a mass
known as a tumor.
Lung cancers can arise in any part of the lung, but 90%-95% of cancers of the lung are thought
to arise from the epithelial cells, the cells lining the larger and smaller airways (bronchi and
bronchioles); for this reason, lung cancers are sometimes called bronchogenic cancers or
bronchogenic carcinomas. (Carcinoma is another term for cancer.) Cancers also can arise from
the pleura or rarely from supporting tissues within the lungs, for example, the blood vessels.

Many symptoms of lung cancer affect the chest and air passages. These
include:
Persistent or intense coughing
Pain in the chest shoulder, or back from coughing
Changes in color of the mucus that is coughed up from the lower airways (sputum)
Difficulty breathing and swallowing
Hoarseness of the voice
Harsh sounds while breathing (stridor)
Chronic bronchitis or pneumonia
Coughing up blood, or blood in the sputum
What are the symptoms of lung cancer?
Cancer symptoms are quite varied and depend on where the cancer is located, where it has
spread, and how big the tumor is. Lung cancer symptoms may take years before appearing,
usually after the disease is in an advanced stage.

There are Two Major Types of Lung Cancer
1. Non-Small Cell Cancers
Non-small cell cancers include squamous cell carcinoma
(tumor), adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
Bronchioloalveolar cell is a subtype of adenocarcinoma
and typically treated in a similar way.
Adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer,
is usually located on the outer surface of the lungs
(periphery) and can spread to lymph glands, the
bloodstream and other organs. Squamous cell carcinoma
may be found in the lining of the large bronchi (air
passages) or in the periphery of the lung. Large cell
carcinoma usually occurs in the periphery.

2. Small Cell Cancers
Small cell lung cancer usually develops in the central areas of the lung. It can spread
aggressively and occurs almost exclusively in current or former smokers. This cell type
