Why is Functional
Skills Important?
• 5.2 Million adults in England have literacy levels
below the required levels to achieve a GCSE
grade D-G and 6.2 million adults have problems
adding/subtracting using three digit numbers.
• It is estimated that a total of 15 Million adults
have low level skills in one or the other or both
skill sets and it is costing businesses every day in
errors, miscommunication and
misunderstanding.
The Facts
Having Functional Skills is important to make sure
these statistic don’t continue.
Most jobs now require at least five GCSEs but with
a workforce who often fall below these
requirements it is making an impact on
productivity and customer service.
Some examples of areas where poor literacy
and numeracy skills can affect a business are:
• Taking cash and having to give change without
a calculator or till that works out change
needed.
• Giving hand written receipts/taking meeting
minutes.
• Taking messages and writing them down.
• Reading a filling in documentation.
• Adding on 10% to bills.
• Measuring potions of food, chemicals etc.
Why They Are Important
All of points on the previous slide are daily tasks
that may seem relatively simple however if not
performed correctly can have a massive impact
on the business!
To tackle this lack in skills the government are
highlighting functional skills
(English, Maths and ICT)
and there importance to the workforce.
Why They Are Important
There are a number of ways that people can find
help improving their functional skills:
• Traineeships and Apprenticeships come with
Functional Skills (if needed).
• Pre-employment training can include functional
skills (if needed). This can be completed into
employment.
Improve Them
If you are an individual looking to
enhance your Functional Skills:
• Improved career opportunities.
• Increased motivation and confidence.
• Positive learning experience.
• Learn at a pace that suits you.

Why is Functional Skills Important?

  • 2. • 5.2 Million adults in England have literacy levels below the required levels to achieve a GCSE grade D-G and 6.2 million adults have problems adding/subtracting using three digit numbers. • It is estimated that a total of 15 Million adults have low level skills in one or the other or both skill sets and it is costing businesses every day in errors, miscommunication and misunderstanding.   • 3. Having Functional Skills is important to make sure these statistic don’t continue. Most jobs now require at least five GCSEs but with a workforce who often fall below these requirements it is making an impact on productivity and customer service.
  • 4. Some examples of areas where poor literacy and numeracy skills can affect a business are: • Taking cash and having to give change without a calculator or till that works out change needed. • Giving hand written receipts/taking meeting minutes. • Taking messages and writing them down. • Reading a filling in documentation. • Adding on 10% to bills. • Measuring potions of food, chemicals etc. Why They Are Important
  • 5. All of points on the previous slide are daily tasks that may seem relatively simple however if not performed correctly can have a massive impact on the business! To tackle this lack in skills the government are highlighting functional skills (English, Maths and ICT) and there importance to the workforce. Why They Are Important
  • 6. There are a number of ways that people can find help improving their functional skills: • Traineeships and Apprenticeships come with Functional Skills (if needed). • Pre-employment training can include functional skills (if needed). This can be completed into employment. Improve Them
