2. Driving For Work
Where driving is required for work, whether it is a regular part of your employment or a one
off situation, there are responsibilities for both the employer and the employee that must be
adhered to. These responsibilities are put in place to protect drivers and the people around them.
Although many of us drive regularly in our day to day lives, driving for work may involve taking
irregular routes, driving long hours or using a vehicle we are unfamiliar with. Because of these
and other reasons, many incidents happen due to inattention, distraction and fatigue, as well as
failure to observe the Highway Code. Complying with individual and collective responsibilities
will ensure that the risks associated with occupational driving are minimized and this course has
been designed to make you aware of these responsibilities and learn how to risk assess various
unusual driving situations. The information provided can also be used to help improve the
maintenance of your every-day vehicles, improving their performance, and their impact on your
wallet.
By completing this course, you will:
• Understand relevant driving at work legislation.
• Recognise the roles and responsibilities of employers & employees.
• Know how monitoring & control support driving for work.
• Understand what is required to drive company owned, leased or privately owned vehicles for
work.
• Be able to adopt a pre-use checklist before driving.
• Review a range of driving guidance profiles.
• Know how to carry out a driving risk assessment.
• Assess your own Highway Code proficiency.
Test screens are included at regular intervals to help emphasise important information and
a short quiz is included to help you to assess your familiarity with the current version of the
Highway Code and find out if you really should improve your knowledge of the Code.
