2. Who was Archimedes? Sicily Island Archimedes was usually living in Syracuse in Sicily so he also called Archimedes of Syracuse. In Greek name his name is Ἀρχιμήδης He was known as mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer. He is famous for founding about golden crown He is also famous for inventing the screw He found out about π too he said π is 3.14085… < π < 3.14286…
3. Childhood of Archimedes City of Alexander He was born in Syracuse in Sicily in 287 BC island his dad was an astronomer and when he was young he taught by his dad about math, astronomy, dynamics and machines When he got older he went to Alexandria in Egypt to study because in that time Alexandria was centre of studying He knew he was smarter than any other mathematicians in Alexander so he didn’t like them
4. His older life Rome Archimedes didn’t get any job, he just spend his whole life to invent, discover and experience. When the Sicily island got attacked by Roman army, he tried to help the Sicily by inventing new weapons For example in the myth he invented pulley and rope and pulled the 3-mast ship by 1 hand Also in the myth he burnt Roman ship by using mirrors and reflect sun to burn the ship.
5. End of his life Some people may already know that Archimedes was killed by Roman soldier. In a myth Archimedes was so absorbed in his new invention and he didn’t know that Sicily island was conquered. Roman general said to soldiers that do not kill Archimedes and bring him alive however when the soldier found him and tried to bring him to Roman camp he said the famous word “do not disturb my circles” so the soldier killed him. When the general heard that, the general killed that soldier.
6. Effects of Archimedes Greece Acropolis There are some big effects still remains in our today’s life from Archimedes For example if Archimedes didn’t invent new weapons for Sicily island, Sicily would be conquered 3 years earlier Also in Egypt some people are still using water screw which invented by Archimedes And he was the first human who found out the π until decimal. He found out π is 3.14………
7. Discoveries And Inventions His most famous story is golden crown but except that he invented and discovered a lot of things which still used today. He invented screw too to bring water up so that people don’t have to go up and down. And he also discovered that sphere in the a cylinder is 2/3 of cylinder’s volume. Archimedes said this was the best discover he ever made so he said curve the sphere and cylinder on his tomb. However his tomb isn’t still found.
8. Discoveries and inventions #2 Archimedes invented and discovered so much things that we can’t fit them in 1 slide. He invented lever too. He used lever as a weapon that can throw 250kg rock in the air. He also invented planetarium that can observe movements and eclipse of sun and moon. He also found out centre of gravity in many different shapes and solid
9. Golden Crown I think the most famous story about Archimedes is the story of golden crown. One time Archimedes told to find out that is the king’s crown made of full gold or not. Archimedes had no idea but when he took bath he saw the water is coming from his bath. And he said another famous word “Eureka” (εὕρηκα) which means “I found it” He was so excited that he forgot to wear cloth but in that time most of the Greek men didn’t wear cloth so much, so it’s not as embarrassing as now
