5. WHAT IS
● is the first open-source integrated library system (ILS)
● first free open source software library automation package
● was created in 1999 by Katipo Communications for the
Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand.
● First installation went live in January of 2000.
● Its development is steered by a growing community of users
collaborating to achieve their technology goals for the library.
• Koha is a Maori word meaning “a gift”.
Maori is the native or indigenous people of New Zealand and
also one of the official languages of New Zealand, English being
the other.

holdings;
