2. What is Hot Potatoes
Hot Potatoes enables you to create interactive Web-based teaching exercises
which can be delivered to any Internet-connected computer equipped with a
browser.
All you need to do is enter the data for your exercises (questions, answers,
responses etc.), and press a button. The program will create the Web pages for
you, and you can then upload them to your server.

4. What is a Jquiz
The JQuiz program creates question-based quizzes.
Questions can be of four different types, including multiple-choice and short-
answer.
SpeciďŹc feedback can be provided both for right answers and predicted wrong
answers or distractors.
The student can ask for a hint in the form of a "free letter" from the answer.
5. What is a Jclose
The JCloze program creates gap-ďŹll exercises. Unlimited correct answers can
be speciďŹed for each gap, student can ask for a hint and see a letter of the
correct answer.
A speciďŹc clue can also be included for each gap. allows gapping of selected
words, or the automatic gapping of every nth word in a text.
6. What is a Jcross
The JCross program creates crossword puzzles
a hint button allows the student to request a free
letter if help is needed.
7. What is a Jmix
The JMix program creates jumbled-sentence exercises.
You can specify as many different correct answers as you want, based on the
words and punctuation in the base sentence a hint button prompts the student
with the next correct word or segment of the sentence if needed.
8. What is a Jmatch
The JMatch program creates matching or ordering exercises.
A list of ďŹxed items appears on the left (these can be pictures or text), with
jumbled items on the right.
This can be used for matching vocabulary to pictures or translations, or for
ordering sentences to form a sequence or a conversation.

9. Create a Quiz
⢠1. Click on JQuiz button. Type the title, questions, options and feedbacks
in the blocks provided. Tick the âCorrectâ answer of the question.
⢠2. Click on the move up button besides the question number to add
questions and the move up button in front of Answers to increase
the number of options.
⢠3. If you want to make short answer questions, hybrid questions
and multi-select questions, you can choose from the options on the
right of the question block.

4. If there is more than one correct answer,
input all the possible answers and tick the
âCorrectâ boxes. After you answer the
question, it will show you all the correct : A
hybrid question is a combination of a multiple-
choice question and a short-answer question.
In this type of question, the student is first
presented with a text box and asked to type the
answer. However, if the student fails to get the
answer right after a specified number of tries
(which you can configure in the configuration
screen), the question changes to a multiple-
choice question to make it easier.
: a multi-select question asks the student to
select several of a specific set of items. The
idea here is that the student must select all the
correct items, and not select all the wrong
items.
11. Getting Tricky
⢠5. You can embed images and link into your quiz by typing in the
HTML code directly or

⢠6. When you ďŹnish making your quiz, you can save as two types of
ďŹle, *.jqz(Hot Potatoesâ JQuiz format) and *.htm(webpage format)

⢠8. You can âshow all the questionsâ or view them one by one using
the â=>â button. Usually, you can redo the questions if you are wrong
but it will deduce your mark (in %) earned for that question.
⢠9. For short answer question and hybrid question, you can press on
the âHintâ button to get some tips.
⢠10. When you ďŹnish answering all the questions, the total marks of
the quiz will be calculated.
12. Creating a close

⢠Create a cloze passage exercise
1. Click on JCloze button. Type the title and the whole passage.
2. Highlight the text that you want to insert a gap. Select the button âGapâ.
Input the clue to help the student to guess the word. If alternative answers are
accepted, input them into the space provided.
3. Select the preference button to conďŹgure the title, instruction, feedback,
buttons, appearance, timer, etc. Press OK when ďŹnished.
4. If it is a cloze passage of a comprehension, select the book icon to type the
reading or import from an external HTML ďŹle

⢠Create a matching exercise
1. Click on JMatch button. Type the title and the whole passage.
2. Type in the title, correct pairs of matching questions and the default answer
for the matching. Tick the âFixâ boxes if you want to provide examples for the
user.
Save as drop down selection webpage.
Save as drag and drop webpage.
Tick if it works as an example.
Enter the default text for matching if any.
3. Save the ďŹle as *.jmt for later editing or save it as *.htm for web publishing.
You can choose either standard or drag/drop webpages.
14. Create a crossword
⢠Create a crossword puzzle
1. Select JCross from Hot Potatoes 6.0.
Enter the title, You can then have 2 ways to enter the words or
phrases.
2. Type the words into the correct positions of the puzzle,
click Manage Grid, Automatic Grid Maker, type in the words,
JCross will generate the crossword puzzle automatically.
3. Click the Add Clues button to add the clues for each of the
words in the puzzle
4. Add the questions for each of the words in the puzzle.
5. Click OK and save the ďŹle.

1. Select JMix. Enter the sentence you want to mix.
2. Input the text in order. If there is any alternate sentences, input all of it in the
right space provided. Click the box below if not using all the words and
punctuations are used. Click the alternate box if verse versa.
3. Save as the *.htm in the right version you need.
