READING ACTIVITIES FOR FICTION AND NONFICTION TEXTS
OBJECTIVE


we will review elementary activities,
strategies and resources that will help your
students grasp context, inferences, and
drawing conclusions
DEFINITIONS
CONTEXT
Start seeing this in grade 1 SOL- Use prior
and background knowledge as context for
new learning.
 Defined as - the circumstances that form
the setting for an event, statement, or
idea, and in terms of which it can be fully
understood and assessed.
 Also can be the parts of something written
or spoken that immediately precede and
follow a word or passage and clarify its
meaning.

INFERENCE
INFERENCE
First alluded to in grade 1 SOL - distinguish
between information provided by pictures or
illustrations and information provided by
words in the text.
 Defined as an idea that is suggested by the
facts or details in a passage

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS
VDOE equates drawing conclusions with
Simple inferences (Enhanced Scope and
Sequence)
 Introduced in grade 2
 Defined as a decision about what may
happen or about the result an event may
have

RIGOR






Rigor is more than what you teach and what
standards you cover; it's how you teach and how
students show you they understand.
True rigor is creating an environment in which each
student is expected to learn at high levels, each
student is supported so he or she can learn at high
levels, and each student demonstrates learning at
high levels (Barbara Blackburn; 2008)
Depth of understanding, depth of questioning, depth
in how students apply what they’ve learned, and
depth in the process and product related to their
learning is really what we’re talking about.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TIPS
MANAGING THE COMPUTER CENTER
Test out the activity yourself (or ask an
advanced student to try it) so you know how
long the activity actually takes
 Introduce the activity to the whole class first
 Establish a signal for students to use to indicate
that they need help
 Designate a “computer center helper” or two
 Use Task Cards
 Plan a related activity for “early finishers”
 Don’t assign more than 2 skill trees in Orchard


Set up “classrooms” whenever possible – it
will help you track student work.
 Use portaportal for individual websites
 Ask your TRT to:


 help

you set up activities
 look them over for you
 Help students in the computer center
 Give you feedback and help you “fix” issues

Reading activities for fiction and non fiction texts

  • 1. READING ACTIVITIES FOR FICTION AND NONFICTION TEXTS
  • 2. OBJECTIVE  we will review elementary activities, strategies and resources that will help your students grasp context, inferences, and drawing conclusions

CONTEXT Start seeing this in grade 1 SOL- Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.  Defined as - the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed.  Also can be the parts of something written or spoken that immediately precede and follow a word or passage and clarify its meaning. 
  • 7. INFERENCE First alluded to in grade 1 SOL - distinguish between information provided by pictures or illustrations and information provided by words in the text.  Defined as an idea that is suggested by the facts or details in a passage 

  • 9. DRAWING CONCLUSIONS VDOE equates drawing conclusions with Simple inferences (Enhanced Scope and Sequence)  Introduced in grade 2  Defined as a decision about what may happen or about the result an event may have 

  • 11. RIGOR    Rigor is more than what you teach and what standards you cover; it's how you teach and how students show you they understand. True rigor is creating an environment in which each student is expected to learn at high levels, each student is supported so he or she can learn at high levels, and each student demonstrates learning at high levels (Barbara Blackburn; 2008) Depth of understanding, depth of questioning, depth in how students apply what they’ve learned, and depth in the process and product related to their learning is really what we’re talking about.

MANAGING THE COMPUTER CENTER Test out the activity yourself (or ask an advanced student to try it) so you know how long the activity actually takes  Introduce the activity to the whole class first  Establish a signal for students to use to indicate that they need help  Designate a “computer center helper” or two  Use Task Cards  Plan a related activity for “early finishers”  Don’t assign more than 2 skill trees in Orchard 

MANAGING THE COMPUTER CENTER Set up “classrooms” whenever possible – it will help you track student work.  Use portaportal for individual websites  Ask your TRT to:   help you set up activities  look them over for you  Help students in the computer center  Give you feedback and help you “fix” issues
