Not all children see active combat, as some are used as porters, cooks, and spies. Girls are often used as sex slaves. While most children are abducted, some volunteer or are volunteered by parents. An estimated 40% of child soldiers are girls. Former child soldiers report experiencing trauma from killing others and post-traumatic stress. Children join militias under threat of death or due to lack of options.
