-5207003013710MEMO00MEMOcenter381000To:Professor Quinn
From:Rebecca Reidy
Date:15-March-11
Philip Boyer’s Background
Philip Boyer received a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from West Chester University and then got his M.B.A. with a concentration in Marketing from Penn State. He completed several executive training programs and additional development training through his previous employers. He said that his educational experience included very little entrepreneurial experience, but it gave him the foundation he needed to be successful.
He works for a major university by teaching young entrepreneurs basic business skills. The setting he works in is very collegiate and allows the students to focus on learning.
He is a director for the Engineering Entrepreneursip Minor and teaches two course in entrepreneurship. The main focus of these classes are to introduce business terms and theories to students.
He does love teaching at the undergraduate level, but it is slower than the actual responsiveness needed for an entrepreneurial mind-set. Sometimes he wish he could move at a faster pace, but he has to make sure that his students understand it.
Agency Background
His mission is to create world-class engineers. He wants to pass his knowledge down and help the business world for the future.
He works at Penn State University as a professor. It is a land grant institution that was established in 1855.
The University has a resident student population of approximately 40,000 students.
Penn State University is managed by a board of Trustees with a president and college deans. They run the university and keep it organized.
Penn State provides the service of education for the future. It will give students the information they need to excel in their carrer.
The University has many funding sources towards it.
Jack Matson’s Background
Jack Matson received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering at TU in 1965. He got his M.S. in Chemical Engineering at TU in 1968. He also got his PhD in Environmental Engineering at Rice University in Houston in 1974.
He is a professional engineer in three states: Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania. He was a chemical engineer at the Sun Oil Refinery, a chemical engineer at EXXON Chemicals in houston, and a professor of enviromental engineering at the University of Houston and then Penn State. Now he is retired and working on his businesses he started up along the way.
His businesses he is involved in are Matson and Associates, and Envinity. His research in environmental engineering led him to commercial opportunities to actualize the inventions and made his business grow.
He loves what he does and all the business he has helped grow. He enjoyed teaching all his students as well.
Agency Background
He calls himself an “ecopreneur”, which means saving the planet through business opportunities. This means that he takes his work seriously and is devoted to achieving success in his businesses.
Matson and Associates is a national business and Envinity is just in Pennsylvania.
The population Jack Matson serves through his businesses, would be his clients.
The structures of his businesses are private and they are rapidly expanding. They are currently at approximately five million dollars gross revenues and project to double in three years.
The Matson and Associates business provides support to clients in lawsuits concerning contamination to land, water, or ground. Envinity is a business that provides their expertise to coordinate construction projects to be done on time.
The funding sources are from their clients.
Comparison and Summary Impressions
There are many similarities and differences between these two entrepreneurs. Both of these entrepreneurs were teaching throughout their careers. They have worked in the classrooms and had to break down their knowledge of business for their students. Sometimes, they had to go at a slower pace to make sure the students had time to comprehend the information. They both enjoy or have enjoyed teaching their students at Penn State. One difference between them is that Jack Matson has been growing businesses as he taught. After he retired from teaching, he focused more on his two businesses. Another difference is that Philip Boyer is more focused on teaching his students the terms and theories, whereas Jack Matson is more focused on making a difference in the world being an “ecopreneur.”
When I was talking to Philip Boyer he went directly to the point. He was very short with me. I sent him question through email and he sent me back an organized word document back. I noticed as he got to the last four or five questions he started to be very short with his answer. Jack Matson was very different. He was very friendly and outgoing. He looked me up on the Toledo website because I told him I was a volleyball player. He was less organized, but he gave me more feedback. He sent me his book through email as well. I could tell he was very experienced entrepreneur. I actually learned a lot from him and he related to me because he was a track runner through his college career. Both of these entrepreneurs helped me a lot through this memo and I really appreciated them taking time out of their day to answer my questions.
I learned a lot from the two interviews. I think that it is very interesting that entrepreneurs do not actually have to major in that field. Jack Matson majored in chemical and environmental engineering and Philip Boyer majored in education and marketing. It explains that you never really know where you are going to end up after college. I also noticed that both entrepreneurs enjoy their jobs very much. I think that it is very important to make sure that you get a job that you want to do. I liked how Jack Matson gave me advice. He told me to read his book and that it would help me in the future to understand the world of business. I also realized that I really respect the two men that emailed me back. I had emailed two other entrepreneurs that did not email me back. I feel that this was a very good project. It helped me learn a little bit more from experienced entrepreneurs and it also helps with networking. I feel that the more people I know, the better I will do in the business world.
