The document provides instructions for students in 4th and 5th grade on how to use the school library catalog to find books. It explains how to search by subject, title, or author. It also defines key terms like library catalog, search bar, and call number. The document walks through an example of searching for the book "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and identifying the number of copies available, whether it's available or checked out, and its call number and location in the library. It then prompts students to do a subject search for three books about dogs for a report.

Explain this searches everywhere in the catalog. Say I am looking for books about dogs. If I search for dogs anywhere, my search results will include books that are about dogs, but also books by the author Mr. Dog which might not be what I am looking for. Define search results.
Demonstrate searching for this title online. Demonstrate clicking on details. Scroll over and explain all information that answers the questions on this slide.
I am lost and confused in the library. Can you tell me how to find books about dogs? Ask students to show me how to do a subject search. Students give verbal directions. Prompts are: what do I write here? (search bar). Which button do I press? Do I press title? Do I press author? Now what do I do? For now, any results retrieved through a subject search for dogs are fine.
Give directions regarding completing worksheet. Call students by name to move to computer workstation. Have these workstations numbered, or labeled with team name. Students move to computers as I call out names. (how many students to a computer?) Worksheets at each station (do not pass out). Students work individually or in small groups to complete worksheet (if three students to a computer, assign “keyboard expert” by pulling names randomly from a hat. Explain the next library lesson, these students will not be in the running for computer use so that everyone gets a turn. Contingincy is booktalks and report back on student predictions.
