The Problem
• Conflicts at work are challenging
enough between peers.
• But when power is unequal, such as
between a boss and subordinate,
traditional conflict resolution methods
often fail.
• Managers spend 30-40% of their time dealing with
conflict−−but get stuck using the same conflict
resolution tactics again and again−−without success.
6
• Often, those in high-power lose. That’s right. They
lose. They don’t achieve their goals or create value.
• Conflicts can choke an organization. The powerful get
frustrated or dictatorial. The powerless lose their
motivation and respect for leadership.
The Cost
• Leadership failures. Organizational failures.
7
• Erosion of teamwork.
• Increased stress-related illness and sabotage.
• Less honesty, less innovation.
• Power differences are seldom addressed in conflict
resolution training. (It’s a dirty little secret. )
The Cost
