William Wallace was a famous Scottish independence figure born around 1272. He died in 1305 after being executed for treason against England by being hanged, drawn and quartered. Wallace came from a noble family and had two brothers who also participated in Scotland's struggle for independence. He defended Scotland's liberties and independence from England as a heroic figure.

The second son of Sir Malcolm Wallace, knight of Elderslie and Auchinbothie, Renfrewshire, and his wife, the daughter of Sir Raynauld Crawford, sheriff of Ayr, he was born about the middle of the reign of Alexander III, or about 1276.
