1. Go Green With Ease!
It is easier to go green in the home than many people may think. There are so many small things that
you can do around your home; you can make a huge difference with little effort. The following tips are
affordable and easy to accomplish. Use them all in your home and feel great about the steps you are
taking to better the world we live in.
As the light bulbs in your home burn out, replace them with CFL bulbs. The cost to power these lights
is so low that they will pay for themselves in as little as six months. They will also last ten times longer
than your old bulbs. Only a few minutes of your time will save you the pain of replacing your bulbs
when they burn out.
When you go to bed at night, power down your computer. This is not only a great way to reduce the
amount of electricity it uses, but it will extend the life of the computer. If computers are left running
when not in use, they are constantly running and becoming damaged due to mechanical wear and
heat stress.
Many garbage collection companies offer free recycling pick up. It may take you a few extra minutes
to carry out the recycling bins every other week, but you will keep the recyclables out of the landfills.
Recycle all of your newspapers, plastics, glass and aluminum through your garbage company. You
can even find services where you can recycle things like motor oil, car batteries and tires.
Cancel the junk mail that gets delivered to your house each day. You can visit the website for The
Direct Marketing Association and opt out of the services that send you all that mail you do not read
anyway. It is a great way to reduce the amount of paper that ends up in landfills and the frustration of
constantly having to shred unwanted advertisements and credit card offers.
Install a programmable thermostat in your home. It will allow you to set your thermostat to adjust the
temperatures when you are not home. Just changing the temperature one degree can make a big
difference in the amount of energy your heating and cooling system uses each year. Also be sure to
perform regular maintenance on your HVAC system. It will keep it running more efficiently, saving you
money on utilities.
2. Keep the lights off in any room that is not in use. Install outdoor lighting that is motion activated.
There is no reason to keep exterior lights on all night long if nobody is going to be out there. Consider
changing to solar powered exterior light fixtures if it is in your budget. Allow the sun to power the
lights for the outside of your home.
Taking these few steps to go green in your home will go a long way in the green movement. If
everyone did their part to keep recyclables out of the landfills and conserve energy, the world would
be a much cleaner place.
