The continually shrinking world and increasingly expanding internet
has impacted significant cultural changes. In addition to the growing
synergy and cross pollination of design, fashion, food, and automotive
industries, the role of Interior Designer has experienced a
transformative evolution.
As a child growing up in the 50’s, I adored accompanying my
designer Mother and Aunt on showroom visits, and taking samples to
clients. At that time, quality design showrooms were open to the trade
only, and every family I knew hired a designer. Back then, the
traditional role of Interior Designer was that of gatekeeper of design.

Today, with the internet, everyone has access to product, and
design is available to anyone. However, with thousands of options
offered in any one category, accessibility becomes overwhelming,
creating its own set of challenges. To address issues that arose out
of internet overload without instruction on how to curate, the role of
Interior Designer inevitability evolved to fit modern needs.
The new model of Interior Designer is that of editor and curator of
the culture of design that combines the utilization of the internet as
a springboard of inspiration and the involvement of the client with on
site (opposite of online) sourcing of product creation.
After navigating the overabundance of internet resources to create a
conceptual framework for customized design, the Interior Designer
includes the client in on select meetings with contractors and trades
people. The client experiences the collaboration of the inspiration of
the designer with the talent of the artisan, and technical product
development of the manufacturer. The experience instills
confidence, builds trust and an understanding of product creation
and development.
