Times Square has undergone significant changes over the past 200 years. In the late 18th century, the area was countryside used for farming belonging to General John Scott. By the early 1900s, it had started developing into an urban area after publisher Adolph S. Ochs moved his newspaper's operations there and a subway station was built. Times Square became known as a busy commercial center but also faced issues with crime and poverty from the 1960s to early 1990s. It is now a popular tourist destination with many attractions like theaters, museums and stores that draw large crowds.
